What is Project Based Learning?
• PBL asks a question or poses
a problem that ALL students
can answer. Concrete, hands-
on experiences come together
during project-based learning.
• PBL allows students to
investigate issues and topics
in real-world problems.

How Does Project Based
Learning Work?
Step 1
Select topic:
 Find a topic that is engaging to both you and the students.
 Make sure the topic has multiple solutions.
Step 2
Identify concepts/brainstorm topic:
Identify key concepts and
brainstorm with students possible
solutions.
Guide them by suggesting ways to
research their ideas.
Their ideas help create student
buy in.
Step 3
Locate materials and resources:
Plan with students a way to research their topic.
Suggest alternate search methods.
Support student research.
Step 4
Plan learning experiences:
Integrate technology and hands on classroom
experiences to compliment student research.
Benefits of Project Based Learning
Create student interest.
Every student can do it!
Increase student skills
Connect school and the outside world.
Provide an enjoyable experience for students.
Project Based Learning can:
Claymation Movies
• Students like to play. Give students’ play dough
or clay and they have a fun activity that helps
reinforce difficult topics such as famous
people’s lives or how a bill becomes a law.

Student PowerPoint/ Prezi:
Let the students show off. Have students create a
PowerPoint in jigsaw activities that allow them to
showcase what they learned on a topic. If
students have done lots of PowerPoint, have
them create a tutorial on an issue. I use tutorials
for Chinese religions.
Create a brochure
Explore the world
Have students create a travel brochure for a new
area that you are studying or a historical tour
brochure about famous battles during a war.
Students can do the whole thing in Word.
Online Discussions
Students respond to a daily writing prompt that gets
them thinking about the topic of the day. This helps
reinforce standard tests as students get used to writing
in every class
Water Theft Discussion Rubric
Skype
Explore the world.
Have a conference with someone from a different country
or an expert in the field of research you are studying. If
your school is not able to get you Skype, send the person a
video email and have them send one back. It is amazing to
see how much more the students get out of an area if they
are asking the questions.
Review Games
Learn with games.
Test review has never been more fun without a digital
version of Jeopardy. Students respond so much better
with the digital screen set up.
Question
 Take a real-world topic and begin an in-depth
investigation
 Start with the Essential question(s).
 Have students do a concept map with you
around the topic. (You have already created
one during your planning)
 KWL
 Questions from group to research
