The document discusses the individuation process, which describes how people become inwardly whole by discovering their true self beyond their persona and ego. It outlines the key steps of this process as persona, shadow, anima/animus, wise old man/great mother, and self. The main characters in Madame Bovary and The Awakening failed to fully complete the individuation process and reach the highest level of self-awareness.

3. Individuation ProcessIndividuation Process
• The individuation process describes the
process of becoming inwardly whole,
discovering one's true self, beyond the
mask of the persona and ego centered life.
• The principle of individuation defines the
essence of the human.
5. Persona
• The persona is a compromise one creates
between himself and the community about how
one appears to be.
6. Shadow
• The shadow is described as composed of the dark
elements of the personality, having an emotional
and primitive nature which resists moral control.
• When one tries to see his Shadow, he becomes
conscious, and often ashamed of, the
characteristics and impulses that he denies in
himself but sees clearly in other people: for
example we say "Oh, it doesn’t matter. Nobody
will notice, and besides other people are doing it
too".
7. Anima/Animus
• Anima is the inner feminine side of a man; Animus is the inner
masculine side of a woman.
• The steps: of Animus
a. Dreams and fantasy as the embodiment of physical power, an
athlete, muscle man or thug.
b. The animus provides her with initiative and the capacity for planned
action. He is behind a woman's desire for independence and a career
of her own.
c. The animus is the "word," often personified in dreams as a professor
or clergyman.
d. The animus is the incarnation of spiritual meaning.
e. The animus mediates between a woman's conscious mind and the
unconscious
8. Wise Old Man/Great MotherWise Old Man/Great Mother
• It is personification of spiritual principle, which represents
knowledge, reflection, wisdom, skill, and intuition in one
side, and on another side moral qualities such as kindness and
feeling to help that makes the character’s spiritual is fairly
balanced. It is the continuation of anima/animus (Feist and
Feist, 2006: 98)
9. The Self
• The Self, according to Jung, is not a kind of
universal consciousness. It is rather an
awareness of our unique nature and our
intimate connection with all life.
