Without their commitment, this all would have been impossible.

Once there was a writer who lived by the seashore, where he spent long periods
writing and seeking inspiration for his books. He was an intelligent, educated
man with a special sensitivity for the important things in life. One morning,
while walking, he spotted a figure in the distance that was moving in an odd
way, as if dancing. As he walked closer, he realized that the figure was a boy
picking up starfish at the water’s edge and throwing them back into the sea. The
man asked him what he was doing, and the boy replied, “I pick up the starfish
that wash up on shore and I throw them back into the water; the tide has
come in very low and many of them will die if I don’t do anything.” The writer
responded, “But what you’re doing makes no sense. There are thousands on this
beach, you’ll never have time to save all of them.”
The young boy looked squarely in the eyes of the writer, plucked a starfish
out from the sand, threw it back with all his might out over the waves, and
declared: “But it matters to this one!”
The writer walked away, somewhat bewildered; he simply could not
understand why a person would do such a thing. That night he slept poorly,
dreaming about the young boy and the starfish bobbing over the waves. The
next morning he hurried out to the beach, sought out the young boy and began
helping him save starfish.

Había una vez un escritor que vivía a orillas del mar, donde pasaba temporadas
escribiendo y buscando inspiración para sus libros. Era un hombre inteligente, culto
y con gran sensibilidad acerca de las cosas importantes de la vida. Una mañana
mientras paseaba vio a lo lejos una figura que se movía de manera extraña, como si
estuviera bailando. Al acercarse vio que era un muchacho que se dedicaba a coger
estrellas de mar y a lanzarlas otra vez al agua. El hombre le preguntó qué estaba
haciendo. Este le contestó: ‘Recojo las estrellas de mar que han quedado varadas;
la marea ha bajado demasiado y muchas morirán’. Dijo entonces el escritor: ‘Pero
esto que haces no tiene sentido, hay miles de estrellas en esta playa, nunca tendrás
tiempo de salvarlas a todas’.
El joven miró fijamente al escritor, cogió una, la lanzó con fuerza por encima de
las olas y exclamó: ¡A esta sí le importa!
El escritor se marchó un tanto desconcertado, no podía explicarse una conducta
así. Esa noche no durmió bien, soñaba con el joven y las estrellas de mar en las olas.
A la mañana siguiente corrió a la playa, buscó al joven y le ayudó a salvar estrellas.

l día sábado 13 de marzo de 2010,
días después de llegar a Iloca, la
fría y penetrante neblina matinal
de nuestra zona costera desperta-
ba a los habitantes de la localidad,
quienes días antes lo habían perdi-
do todo tras el devastador tsunami.
Eran las primeras horas del alba y una luz de
esperanza alumbraba el ingreso de una caravana
de 12 camiones tocando sus bocinas y portando
enormes banderas chilenas. Se concretaba así
el comienzo de la construcción de la primera
escuela modular, justo dos semanas después de
haber empeñado nuestra palabra con el alcalde
de que tendría de vuelta en clases a sus alumnos
el 20 de marzo y cuando nadie se imaginaba que
podríamos alcanzar la meta en tan poco tiempo.
Como muchos saben, a pocas horas de que el
terremoto y tsunami remecieran la vida de miles
de chilenos, un pequeño grupo de personas lide-
rado por el empresario Felipe Cubillos, habíamos
decidido viajar a la zona más afectada para pres-
tar ayuda. A pesar de la magnitud de la catástro-
fe habíamos organizado una eficaz red solidaria,
a través de la cual realizamos un catastro de las
necesidades de cada comunidad y comenzamos
a gestionar los aportes y donaciones que fuesen
necesarios. La primera meta que nos habíamos
puesto era lograr que los pescadores artesanales
volvieran al mar. En una zona de caletas, lo que
se recauda para Semana Santa significa 60% de
los ingresos anuales de esas localidades costeras.
Había urgencia por ofrecer una solución concreta
antes de los esperados días festivos, y ahí estuvo
Rufino Melero, quien trabajó sin cesar hasta ob-
tener las donaciones necesarias para reponer los
motores de los pescadores e iniciar una intensa
labor de reparación de botes. Paralelamente
surgió la imperativa necesidad de que los niños
volvieran al colegio: estarían en un lugar segu-
ro, cuidados, entretenidos y sus padres podrían
dedicarse a reconstruir sus vidas, sus hogares,
reincorporarse a sus trabajos. Por eso recuerdo
que al ver a la gente de Iloca, Duao y La Pesca
saliendo de sus carpas y aplaudir a este convoy
de patriotas que iba en su ayuda, con Felipe
lloramos de emoción. Efectivamente hubiera sido
imposible cumplir los estrechos plazos que nos
propusimos sin el compromiso incondicional de
los trabajadores y constructores liderados por
Daniel Troncoso, quienes merecen una especial
mención y reconocimiento. Y de muchos volun-
tarios que se entregaron por completo a que las
familias de Iloca recibieran lo mejor para iniciar
una nueva etapa.
¿CÓMO NOS LLAMAMOS?
A medida que más voluntarios se iban sumando a
la causa, esta agrupación de ciudadanos comunes
y corrientes comenzó a adquirir un inesperado
protagonismo en la tarea de reconstruir el país.
Necesitábamos un nombre que nos identificara,
y tratando de contestar a esa pregunta surgió la
idea de “Desafío”, inspirados en el yate “Desafío
Cabo de Hornos”, en el que Felipe Cubillos había
dado la vuelta al mundo. Pero ahora el desafío
de este equipo sería responder rápidamente ante
la tragedia que había golpeado a la Zona Centro
y Sur del país. Y lo de “Levantemos Chile” hacía
alusión a poner nuevamente de pie a los miles
de compatriotas afectados por este desastre de la
naturaleza. ¿Cuál fue nuestro modelo de ayuda?
Fundamentalmente enfocarnos en restablecer el
sistema de ingresos económicos en las zonas más
afectadas. Por eso dimos prioridad a los pescado-
res de las caletas, de manera que pudieran regre-
sar al mar y, por consiguiente, las familias volvie-
ran a la normalidad. En paralelo, que los niños

pudieran volver al colegio y retomar sus clases.
En este intenso proceso fue fundamental la ayuda
de personas como José Pedro Varela y el apoyo al
equipamiento de las escuelas con la campaña de
útiles escolares; Sergio Calvo, quien recorrió más
de 20 mil kilómetros validando los daños reales;
Carlos Marsh, poniendo a nuestro servicio una
página web y acceso a las redes sociales en tiempo
récord; Leonor Calvo, como la coordinadora de
todos los voluntarios; Ana María Zaldívar, lideran-
do el equipo de comunicaciones con el gran apoyo
de la agencia de comunicaciones HK Strategies,
Carlos Albers, ordenando las finanzas; Isabel Díaz,
preocupada de los certificados para los donantes
y los primeros voluntarios: Diego Larraín, Cristián
Emhart y Askaan Wohlt; los pilotos Carlos Molina,
Pancho Rojas y Jorge Cortés, que volaron más de
80 horas con Felipe… y muchos, muchos otros que
de una u otra forma hicieron posible esta gran
campaña de solidaridad.
EL SEGUNDO TIEMPO
Superada la emergencia y cubiertas las necesi-
dades más urgentes, nuestra joven fundación se
propuso el desafío de ampliar su red de acción
y asumir como propia la tarea de mejorar la
calidad de vida de los damnificados. Ya no bas-
taba con ayudar a levantar al país después de
la tragedia; era fundamental generar un víncu-
lo permanente con las necesidades actuales y
venideras de todas las comunidades afectadas.
Después tampoco nos pareció suficiente centrar
la ayuda solo en las personas perjudicadas por el
terremoto y tsunami, porque una vez cumplida
esa misión, la fundación se preparaba para el
próximo paso: convertirse en una gran cadena
de solidaridad para todos los chilenos con menos
oportunidades. En palabras más sencillas, ser un
puente entre los que tienen y los que necesitan.
Ser una fundación de gestión, no de operación.
Ser una fundación que desarrolla y apoya el em-
prendimiento, no la caridad. Ser una fundación
de terreno. Entregar informes claros y detallados
de nuestra gestión a los donantes. Transmitir
los valores del emprendimiento social. Promo-
ver la educación de calidad. Usar nuestra red de
contactos en beneficio de la gente con menos
oportunidades. Ser una fundación que utiliza
modelos replicables de gestión social. Transmi-
tir los valores humanos y el legado de nuestros
amigos que partieron tras el accidente aéreo de
Juan Fernández.

THE BEGINNING
n Saturday, 13 March 2010,
days after arriving at Iloca,
the cold and penetrating
morning mist so typical of
Chile’s coastal towns awak-
ened the local residents
who had lost everything to
a catastrophic tsunami just days earlier. At that
very early dawn hour, a light of hope lit the way
for a convoy of twelve trucks honking their horns
and bearing huge, unfurled Chilean flags. This
marked the beginning of the construction of the
first modular school house, precisely two weeks
after we gave the mayor our word that his stu-
dents would be back at their desks by 20 March.
Nobody thought we could possibly meet such a
goal in that short period of time. As many of us
now know, a few hours after the earthquake and
tsunami brought chaos and destruction to the
lives of thousands of chileans, a small group of
people, led by the businessman Felipe Cubillos,
traveled to the most devastated area to offer what
assistance we could. Despite the magnitude of the
disaster, we had been able to organize an effec-
tive and dedicated network of collaborators, which
allowed us to carry out an inventory of the needs
of each community and from there we began to
manage the contributions and donations that were
so desperately needed.
The first goal we established was that of help-
ing the local independent fishermen return to
the ocean. In an area filled with small bays, the
fishermen’s haul during Holy Week represents
60% of the annual income in these coastal regions.
There was an urgent need for a concrete solu-
tion before these much-anticipated holidays, and
that solution came in the guise of Rufino Melero,
who worked ceaselessly to procure the donations
needed to replace the motors of the fishermen’s
boats, and embarked on an intense phase of boat
repair.
At the same time, another very pressing need
became clear: the local children had to get back to
school, where they would be in a safe place, taken
care of and entertained so that their parents could
get started rebuilding their lives and their homes,
and return to work. As we saw the people of Iloca,
Duao and La Pesca come out from their tents and
applaud our convoy of patriots that had come to
their rescue, Felipe and I were so touched that we
began to cry. In fact, it would have been impos-
sible to meet the tight deadlines that we had set
for ourselves had it not been for the unflagging
commitment of Daniel Troncoso’s team of work-
ers and builders, who merit a very special mention
and acknowledgment, as do the many volunteers
who gave of themselves unconditionally so that
the families of Iloca might receive the very best as
they started a new phase of life.
WHAT IS OUR NAME?
As more and more volunteers joined our cause,
our collective of everyday citizens began to take on
an unexpectedly prominent role in the task of re-
building the country. We needed a name to identify
ourselves, and to this end the idea of a desafío, or
challenge, came to mind, inspired by Desafío Cabo
de Hornos (Cape Horn Challenge), the yacht that
Felipe Cubillos skippered around the world. Our
challenge, of course, was to offer a swift response
to the tragedy that had demolished the central
and southern region of the country. And “Levan-
temos Chile” (Raising Chile) alluded to the idea of
helping thousands of our fellow Chileans get back
on their feet after this natural catastrophe.

What was our aid model? Fundamentally, it meant
focusing on re-establishing the income system in
the areas that had sustained the worst damage.
And so we prioritized the local bay fishermen,
so that they could return to the ocean and their
families could regain some degree of normality.
We also wanted to get the children back to school,
back in class.
This intense process hinged on the assistance
of people like José Pedro Varela, who helped
equip schools through the school supply cam-
paign; Sergio Calvo, who traveled over 20,000
kilometers assessing damages; Carlos Marsh,
who got us up and running with a web page
and access to social networks in record time;
Leonor Calvo, coordinator of all the volunteers;
Ana María Zaldívar, who led the communica-
tions team with the tremendous support of the
HK Strategies communications agency; Carlos
Albers, getting the finances in order; Isabel Díaz,
concerned about the certificates to go out to do-
nors and our first volunteers Diego Larraín, Cris-
tián Emhart and Askaan Wohlt; the pilots Carlos
Molina, Pancho Rojas and Jorge Cortés, who
logged over 80 hours of flying time with Felipe...
and many, many others who in different ways
made this great campaign of solidarity possible
.
THE SECOND PHASE
As the emergency period came to a close and the
most pressing needs were met, our young founda-
tion decided to take on the challenge of casting
a wider net of action and tackling the cause of
improving the quality of life of those affected by
the earthquake and tsunami. Helping to ‘lift’ the
country after the tragedy and get people back on
their feet was no longer enough; what we needed
now was a permanent link with the present and
future needs of all the affected communities.
After a time, we began to feel it wasn’t enough to
focus our aid efforts exclusively on those people
whose lives were devastated by the earthquake
and tsunami. Once this mission was completed,
the foundation began to lay the groundwork for its
next step: to become a massive chain of solidarity
for those Chileans living with great disadvantages.
In other words, to serve as a bridge between those
who have and those who need. To be a foundation
of action, not operation. To be a foundation that
develops and supports new programs and initia-
tives, not charity. To be a foundation that works
in the field. To deliver clear and detailed reports
of our activities to our benefactors. To transmit
the values of social entrepreneurship. To promote
quality education. To put our network of contacts
at the service of those people with fewer oppor-
tunities. To be a foundation that uses replicable
models of social action. To transmit human values
and the legacy of our friends who died in the Juan
Fernández airplane accident.

canales de televisión incluso trasmi-
tieron en vivo la ceremonia. Fue en
esas circunstancias que conocimos al
conductor Felipe Camiroaga. Con su
calidez, claridad y sencillez, fue nuestro
principal promotor y aliado en difundir masivamen-
te el mensaje de optimismo que impulsaba nuestro
trabajo, porque nosotros sí creíamos que se podía
salir de esta tragedia. Más adelante, cuando inaugu-
ramos la escuela en Juan Fernández, que también
se transmitió en vivo a todo el país, descubrimos
su profunda conexión con la isla y su creciente
compromiso de asumir como propios los sueños
del Desafío Levantemos Chile. Justamente a grabar
los avances de reconstrucción en la isla iba él y su
equipo de TVN en el fatídico vuelo del 2 de septiem-
bre de 2011. Viajaban con ellos nuestros amigos,
entusiasmados de mostrar lo que hasta entonces se
había logrado… Por eso es necesario rendir un ho-
menaje a Felipe Camiroaga y a su equipo, y a todos
quienes dieron su vida ayudando a los habitantes
de la isla. A nuestro gran amigo y colaborador, el

en pocas semanas y con increíble profesionalismo
convertirnos en un “caos eficiente”. Con la misión de
transformar el archipiélago de Juan Fernández, una
de las bellezas naturales más destacadas de Chile,
en el escenario perfecto para actividades deportivas
extremas iban otros dos grandes colaboradores, Jor-
ge Palma y Joel Lizama. Querían planificar una gran
carrera internacional y, de paso, ayudar a levantar el
turismo en la isla. Jóvenes sanos de cuerpo y mente;
extremos, corajudos y valientes. Con ellos, nuestro
amigo y fundador Felipe Cubillos, quien encendió
y siempre perpetuará la llama que hoy alumbra el
corazón de todos los integrantes del Desafío Levan-
temos Chile. Todos los amigos que partieron son
verdaderos héroes civiles, personas como cualquie-
ra de ustedes, ciudadanos de este país que un día
decidieron que era importante ayudar al prójimo
haciendo lo mejor que estuviera a su alcance. Creo
que la historia de Chile sin duda los tendrá en un lu-
gar destacado. Nuestra solidaridad, aprecio, cariño y
amor a todas las familias de los 21 accidentados de
Juan Fernández: ustedes son parte de nuestra alma
y corazón. Fueron y serán siempre parte del desafío
de levantar a Chile.

arquitecto Sebastián Correa, quien había sucumbido
ante los encantos de este mágico rincón de nuestro
país. Joven talentoso, caballero, amable, sencillo, bri-
llante como pocos, había alucinado con la propuesta
de Desafío Levantemos Chile. Partió diseñando la
escuela modular de Constitución y desde entonces
nunca más se detuvo en la tarea de apoyar cada
proyecto de reconstrucción. El “Negro” se enamoró
de Juan Fernández y de su gente; pocos saben que
diseñó cada uno de los locales comerciales de la
isla junto a sus propios dueños.Y por eso quería
compartir este paraíso con su mujer, Catalina Vela,
quien lo acompañó en aquel lamentable vuelo. Joa-
quín Arnolds era integrante de un grupo de jóvenes
autodenominados ‘Los Desafiados’. Emprendedores
que de un día para otro habían optado por el em-
prendimiento social v/s el enriquecimiento perso-
nal, poniendo su talento y capacidades al servicio
de los chilenos más necesitados. Como destacado
ingeniero comercial que era, tuvimos la suerte de
que se integrara a nuestro equipo. El “Joaco” tenía un
humor agudo y jovial, le brillaban los ojos de lo apa-
sionado que era por su trabajo, y su principal misión
fue organizar a esta naciente fundación logrando

host Felipe Camiroaga. With his
warmth, clarity and easy, infectious charm, he was
the most prominent champion of our cause and an
ally in the task of spreading, on a massive scale, the
optimistic vision that inspires our work, because
we believed –we knew—that we would be able to
come out of this tragedy. Some time after that,
when we inaugurated the school on Juan Fernán-
dez, an event that was also broadcast on live televi-
sion, we learned of Felipe’s deep connection to the
island and his growing personal commitment to
the hopes and dreams of Desafío Levantemos Chile.
It was, precisely, to cover the progress of rebuild-
ing the island that brought him and his team from
TVN on that fateful flight of 2 September 2011.
Many of our colleagues and friends were also on
that flight, filled with excitement at the prospect of
showing off all that we had accomplished...

trepreneurship over the pursuit of personal gain,
placing their talents and capacities at the service
of the neediest among us in Chile. It was our great
fortune that this distinguished young business-
man had decided to join forces with us. “Joaco” was
jovial and had a sharp wit. His eyes shone with
the passion he felt for the work he was doing, and
his primary objective was to organize this nascent
foundation: in a few short weeks and with incred-
ible professionalism he managed to transform our
efforts into what might be called “efficient chaos.”
With the mission of transforming the Juan
Fernández archipelago, one of the most stunning
places of natural beauty in Chile, into the ideal
backdrop for a variety of extreme sports activities,
Jorge Palma and Joel Lizama were two more of our
trusted and beloved colleagues. They wanted to or-
ganize a large-scale international race and, in the
process, help improve tourism on the island. They
were young men who were healthy in body and
soul: extreme, daring and courageous. And with
them was our friend and founder Felipe Cubillos,
who lit the eternal flame that lights the way for all
those involved in Desafío Levantemos Chile.
All of these friends who have now left
us are true civilian heroes, people like
any others among us, citizens of this
country who one day decided that it
was important to help their fellow man
by giving the very best they could. I be-
lieve that they have earned themselves
a place of honor in the annals of Chi-
lean history. With these words we share
our solidarity, appreciation, affection
and love with the families of the 21
victims of the Juan Fernández accident.
You are part of our heart and soul. You
were and always will be part of the cha-
llenge to raise Chile.
Because of all this, we would like to take this
space to offer a tribute to Felipe Camiroaga and his
team, and all those people who gave their lives in
the effort to help the residents of Juan Fernández
island. To our great friend and colleague, the archi-
tect Sebastián Correa, who had been seduced by
this magical corner of our country. A talented young
gentleman who was dashing, friendly, down-to-
earth, and brilliant as few people are, Sebastián was
amazed and inspired by the challenge of Desafío Le-
vantemos Chile. He started by designing the modu-
lar school in Constitución and he never stopped
after that, working on and supporting each succes-
sive reconstruction project.“El Negro,” as he was
called, fell in love with the island and the people of
Juan Fernández; few people know that he designed
each of the commercial storefronts on the island,
in collaboration with their respective owners. He
wanted to share this paradise with his wife, Catalina
Vela, who accompanied him on that tragic flight.
Joaquín Arnolds was a member of a group of
young people that called themselves los desafia-
dos, the challenged. These were entrepreneurs
who, from one day to the next, chose social en-

y bendecirnos con el privilegio de encontrarnos. Yo sé

tranquilo. Tu gran desafío fue descifrar cómo se cons-
truye este puente entre los que pueden ayudar y los
que necesitan ser ayudados. Todo el día hablabas de este ‘mercado perfecto’,
donde la demanda de necesidades sociales es infinita y la oferta, muy limi-
tada. Tuviste el don de transmitirnos que debemos ser solidarios a partir de
nuestras propias capacidades, talentos y oficios; que todos podemos ayudar;
que si no lo hacemos, Chile nunca será desarrollado; que el Estado jamás lo
puede hacer solo y que, de paso, siendo solidario, a uno se le llena el alma y
el corazón. Por eso estamos acá, porque somos tus amigos. Porque si tú caís-
te, tus hombres "sabrán cumplir con su deber". Descansa en paz, la semilla
que sembraste en todos nosotros está germinando y echará raíces en muchos
desafiados más.

On behalf of all of us who had the privilege of sharing
your friendship, I can only thank God for ensuring that our
paths might cross, and for honoring and blessing us with
the privilege of meeting and knowing you. You left us at a
moment of great plenitude: you were contented, fulfilled,
serene. Your great challenge was figuring out how to build
a bridge between those who were able to help and those who needed help.
All day long you would talk about this “perfect market,” in which the demand
for social needs is infinite and the supply, extremely limited. You had a gift
for showing us how to exercise our solidarity through our individual talents,
abilities and vocations; you taught us that we all have something to give; that
if we don’t do it, Chile will never become the country that it is meant to be;
that the government can’t do it alone, and that true solidarity fills the heart
and the soul.
This is why we are here, because we are your friends. Because even though
you are no longer with us, your friends will know how to fulfill their obliga-
tions. May you rest in peace, for the seed that you planted in each and every

Hola a todos: estamos desde hace tres días en la zona costera del epicentro
del terremoto y el escenario es desolador. Les diría que el maremoto produjo
mucho más daño que el terremoto (…) En los pueblos ubicados en la costa
prácticamente no hay nada en pie (…) Me impresiona la mirada de la gente;
una mezcla de incredulidad, tristeza, orgullo y esperanza. Y es que saben,
sabemos, que nos vamos a volver a poner de pie y sabemos que lo vamos a
hacer entre todos (…) Como en toda crisis, siempre surgen los héroes, y como
suele suceder en la vida real, esos héroes son generalmente personas que no
buscan ni la fama ni el reconocimiento, solo ayudar, solo hacer el bien. Y he
conocido a varios en estos días.

veleristas– que habíamos
recibido montones de otros mails desde el yate
Desafío Cabo de Hornos cuando él dio la vuelta al
mundo en 2008-2009, en los que nos relataba sus
aventuras y compartía las más profundas reflexio-
nes. Ahora nos contaba que llevaba tres días en la
zona costera del epicentro, que el maremoto había
provocado un daño enorme, y que una de sus
principales preocupaciones eran los pescadores
artesanales. Se habían perdido alrededor de 350
embarcaciones, y nos explicaba que en Chile solo
se producen 40 botes al mes. Coincidía que en ese
momento tampoco había stock de motores que se
pudieran comprar. ‘¿Cómo vamos a construir todos
esos botes y conseguir tantos motores? Este sí que
es un desafío…’, escribió casi al final del correo.
La invitación a ayudar era clara. Y muy simbó-
lica, además, porque a todos nos unía el amor por
el mar y sabíamos perfectamente que los recursos
de esas localidades provenían de la pesca. Propu-
se que cada uno apadrinara a un pescador con
la compra de un motor o materiales para reparar
los botes y me contestó que perfecto, pero que me
hiciera cargo de comunicarme con esta red. Muy
ingenuo, al principio pensé que mi trabajo solo
consistiría en hacerme cargo de contactar por mail
a los donantes.
Sin darme cuenta quedé a cargo de las platas. A
los pocos días estaba metido en la compra de moto-
res, en su traslado junto a Gerardo Jofré, Alejandro
Botto y Daniel Bravo y en mesas de trabajo con el
gobierno y privados para concretar el programa
“Volvamos a la mar”, con el que se ayudó a los pes-
cadores en la reparación y reposición de sus embar-
caciones y artes de pesca (redes, trajes, equipos de
buceo, etc.).Yo había dejado mi fábrica casi comple-
tamente de lado sin proponérmelo. Sin tregua.
Así era Felipe: lograba que te vincularas en
cada tarea al extremo de que las causas termina-
ban sintiéndose propias. Él detectaba la necesi-
dad, te la mostraba y la dejaba en tus manos. Lo
mismo que hace actualmente la fundación. Era
imposible no comprometerse. Hoy es imposible no
comprometerse.

Cubillos sent a
message to all his
contacts among
his sailing friends.
We were the same
people who had received many emails from Felipe
before, from the time when he circumnavigated
the globe in 2008 and 2009 aboard Desafío Cabo
de Hornos. In those emails he would tell us of his
adventures and share his deepest reflections. In
this email, however, he told us that for three days
he had traveled throughout Chile’s central coas-
tal zone, at the epicenter of the earthquake. He
said that the tsunami had caused a catastrophic
amount of damage and that one of his primary
concerns was the situation of the local fishermen.
Some 350 vessels had been lost. He then explained
that in Chile, only 40 boats per month are produ-
ced. At that moment, there were no stocks of mo-
tors that might be purchased. “How are we going to
build that many boats and get hold of that many
motors? This is going to be a real challenge...” he
wrote toward the end of the email.
The invitation to help was clear. And it was
symbolic, too, because all of us were united by
our love of the sea, and we knew full well that the
resources of the towns in question came directly
from the fishing business. I proposed that each
of us ‘adopt’ a fisherman with the purchase of a
motor or materials to repair boats. Felipe said,
okay, perfect—but he wanted me to take charge
of connecting with the network of people. At first,
quite innocently, I thought my work would simply
involve contacting donors by email.
Unwittingly, I ended up in charge of all the money.
A few days later, I was already purchasing motors and
figuring out how to ship them, along with Gerardo
Joffé,Alejandro Botto and Daniel Bravo. I was partici-
pating in working groups with the government and
private enterprises, to establish the program “Volva-
mos a la mar” (Back to the ocean), which aimed to
help fisherman repair and restock their boats and fis-
hing gear (suits, nets, diving equipment, etc).Without
realizing it I completely abandoned the operation of
my own factory.And the work kept pouring in.
But that’s who Felipe was: he was so good at
getting you to commit to a task that it became
your cause, not just his. He discovered the need, he
showed it to you, and then he left it in your hands.
This is exactly what the foundation does now. It
was impossible not to become committed. And the
same is true today.

web de desafío levantemos chile. De inmediato intuí que lo que venía
sería grande. Durante los vertiginosos primeros meses de la reconstrucción,

emails entre voluntarios, beneficiarios, líderes de equipos y damnificados
dieron forma al notable y contagioso espíritu colaborativo, hoy sólido

Two days after 27 February I received the call from Felipe to create the web site for Desafío Levantemos Chile.
Immediately I knew this was going to be big. During the dizzying first few months of the reconstruction efforts, our
communications were 100% digital: blogs, Facebook, Twitter and thousands of emails between volunteers, benefactors,
team leaders and earthquake survivors gave shape to the remarkable and infectious spirit of collaboration that is,
today, the bedrock of our foundation. Through the digital platform we have created a solid bridge for facilitating
communications between those in need and those who are able to resolve those needs.

De chico mi papá me había contado que si
el agua se ve como que pareciera hervir, hay
que arrancar porque es maremoto seguro. Se
empiezan a formar especies de burbujas, similares
a cuando anda un cardumen de sardinas. Por
suerte esa noche había una luna enorme que
alumbraba como si fuera de día.
Al principio parecía como si el mar hubiese
estado sostenido por una compuerta, y al abrirse
se vino un muro de agua que creció de un
momento a otro, arrastrando todo. Después fue el
turno de la ola: a lo lejos se veía una línea oscura,
que después se convirtió en un farallón negro que
avanzaba. Cuando se empezó a recoger el mar se
alcanzaban a ver los mismos roqueríos de donde
sacábamos congrio colorado; se distinguía parte
del fondo marino, todo quedó a la vista.
When I was a young boy my father always
told me that when the water looks like it’s about
to boil over, you have to get out because it’s a
tsunami, for sure. Little bubbles start to form, kind
of like when a school of sardines passes by. Luckily
that night a huge moon was out, lighting the way
for us, just like daytime.
At first the ocean looked like it was being held
up by floodgates, and when they opened, a wall of
water was upon us, and it grew from one moment
to the next, sweeping everything away. Then the
wave came: from far away you could see a dark
line that turned into a black cliff that advanced
toward us. When the tide went back out you could
see the same rock clusters where we used to fish
for red conger, and you could see part of the ocean
floor. Everything was exposed.

Después de la tragedia le dije a mis colegas pescadores que fuéramos a
rescatar cualquier cosa de utilidad que hubiera arrojado el mar: chalecos
salvavidas, redes, boyas, lo que fuera. Y muchos de ellos me decían, incluso
llorando: ‘para qué, si total nosotros ya nunca más seremos pescadores’.
Así de golpeado estaba el ánimo en las caletas, porque la mayoría lo había
perdido todo.
Yo tuve la suerte de ser el primer pescador en salir al mar después del
terremoto, invitado por don Felipe Cubillos. Llevo más de 15 años siendo
dirigente, y puedo decir que sin la ayuda del Desafío Levantemos Chile,
habría sido imposible que los pescadores nos hubiéramos recuperado tan
rápido. Porque a pesar de lo abatidos que estábamos, esta caleta fue de las
primeras en tener 100% de sus hombres de regreso a la pesca, y a 100% de
los restoranes funcionando. Fue porque los voluntarios de Desafío no solo
nos ayudaron a reconstruir los botes, sino que también nos dieron ánimo y
mucha compañía. Me acuerdo que al principio comíamos en ollas comunes
y ellos compartían junto a nosotros como uno más de la caleta. Y esos ges-
tos no se olvidan, porque al final, entre todos éramos verdaderos amigos.
After the tragedy I told the other fishermen that we ought to go out and
save whatever useful things we could find that the sea had tossed back: life-
jackets, nets, buoys, whatever. And many of them said to me, some of them
crying, “What for? We’ll never be fishermen again.” That was how low morale
had sunk in the bays, because most everyone had lost everything.
I was lucky—I was the first fisherman back out on the water after the
earthquake, invited by Mr. Felipe Cubillos. I’ve been a union leader for over 15
years, and I can tell you that without the help of Desafío Levantemos Chile,
there is no way that our fisherman could have recovered as quickly as we
did. Because even though we felt defeated, this bay was among the first to
have 100% of its men back out fishing, and 100% of the restaurants functio-
ning. And that’s because the Desafío volunteer didn’t just help us rebuild our
boats, they cheered us on and kept us company. I remember that at first we
all ate out of a common pot and they shared everything with us, as if they
were fishermen just like us. You don’t forget those kinds of gestures, because
in the end, we were all friends, real, true friends.

Al Desafío llegué porque era muy amigo
de Felipe, de chico navegaba con él, siempre
estábamos en contacto. Para el terremoto yo
estaba a cargo de un pequeño astillero en
Santiago donde construía y modificaba yates.
Viendo que se necesitaba tanta ayuda, con mis
maestros partimos inmediatamente a Iloca.
Lo primero que hacíamos en cada caleta
era un catastro de cuántos botes podíamos
arreglar. Normalmente ponía a un maestro y
a unos 10 voluntarios por caleta, la mayoría
jóvenes que aprendían alguna tarea del proceso
y después ayudaban a que pudiéramos avanzar
más rápido. Los pescadores también trabajaban
mucho, nuestra principal tarea era capacitarlos y
proveerles de materiales que nos iban mandando
desde Santiago. Estuvimos como un mes y medio
trabajando 14 horas al día, de domingo a domingo,
y creo que reparamos unos 130 barcos. Pero es
un sacrificio que los pescadores se merecen más
que nadie. Yo soy navegante, he viajado por todo
el mundo y puedo decir que los que siempre te
ayudan son ellos. Si estás en el medio del mar,
son capaces de desviar la ruta para darte una
indicación. Con esta experiencia sentí que por
primera vez todo lo que he aprendido en la vida
se estaba aplicando en algo que realmente valía
la pena; que mis conocimientos como ingeniero
naval de verdad habían sido de utilidad.
I came to Desafío through Felipe, who was a
very good friend of mine. When we were kids
we used to sail together, and we always stayed
in touch. At the time of the earthquake I was
running a small shipyard in Santiago where I
built and worked on yachts. When I saw how
much help was needed, my builders and I left
immediately for Iloca.
The first thing we did in each bay was take an
inventory of how many boats we could fix. Normally
I would put one boat builder and around 10
volunteers per bay, most of them young people who
would learn some task in the process and later help
us to advance faster. The fishermen worked a lot,
too. Our main job was to train them and give them
the materials that we were continually receiving
from Santiago. We were there for about a month
and a half, working 14 hours a day, seven days a
week, and I believe we repaired around 130 boats.
But it was a sacrifice that the fishermen deserved
more than anyone. I am a sailor, I’ve traveled all
over the world and I can say that sailors are always
there to lend a hand. If you’re in the middle of the
ocean, they’ll change their entire route just to give
you directions. Through this experience, though,
for the first time I felt that everything I had learned
in my life was actually being applied to something
worthwhile; that my knowledge as a naval engineer
had actually been of use.

Cuando escuché que Felipe Cubillos iba en
ayuda de los pescadores de la Séptima Región,
decidí partir por mi cuenta a la Octava para ver
lo que estaba sucediendo. Soy navegante y me fui
con tres mecánicos a recorrer algunas caletas, con
la idea inicial de dar apoyo técnico a los motores
que pudiéramos rescatar. Pero no dimos abasto
ante la cantidad de pescadores damnificados. Lla-
mé a Felipe para contarle mi experiencia y pedirle
ayuda, la que inmediatamente se concretó: gra-
cias al apoyo de los privados logramos entregar 29
motores nuevos y más de 21 embarcaciones que
recibimos como donación, nuevas o de segunda
mano. Paralelamente pudimos reparar unos 25
motores y recuperar más de 40 embarcaciones en
la caleta de Tubul. Participamos en la reparación
de casi 300 embarcaciones de fibra de vidrio y
madera, con talleres que organicé en las distintas
caletas en coordinación con aserraderos locales.
También realizamos otras tareas en distintas
zonas de la región, como la reparación de una
escuela en la Isla Mocha, la entrega de un mue-
lle flotante en Lebu y la reposición de las figuras
de San Pedro (patrono de los pescadores) que se
había llevado el tsunami.
Debo decir que fue una de las experiencias
más profundas de mi vida, una locura a la que
era imposible rehusarse, aunque el desgaste
físico y psicológico fue tremendo. Creo que hice
más de 12 viajes entre Puerto Montt y la zona
afectada, y recorrí casi 15.000 km. en mi camio-
neta transportando fibra de vidrio, tablas, tam-
bores con petróleo, alimentos, remedios, pintura.
Y si bien fue una tarea que asumí por iniciativa
personal, siempre conté con el gran respaldo del
naciente Desafío Levantemos Chile y de Felipe
Cubillos, quien todo el tiempo me acompañó
telefónicamente o con su presencia. Era impresio-
nante la energía que transmitía. Para él todo era
posible, pero no daba las soluciones. Sí apoyaba
cada una de las ideas que uno tímidamente iba
sugiriendo.

When I heard that Felipe Cubillos was going
out to help the fishermen in Region VII, I decided
to head out on my own to Region VIII to see what
was going on. I’m a sailor myself and I went out
with three mechanics to visit some of the bays,
with the initial idea of offering technical assis-
tance to people with motors that we felt were
salvageable. But we didn’t have enough manpower
to help the number of affected fishermen. I called
Felipe to tell him what I had found and to ask him
for help, which immediately materialized: thanks
to support from private companies we donated 29
new motors and over 21 vessels, either new or se-
condhand, which we received as donations. As all
this was happening, we were able to repair some
25 motors and rescue over 40 vessels in Tubul
bay. We helped repair almost 300 vessels made of
fiberglass and wood, with workshops that I orga-
nized in the different bays, in coordination with
local sawmills. We also did other kinds of work in
the surrounding area: we repaired a school on Isla
Mocha, we delivered a floating pier in Lebu and
replaced the figures of San Pedro (the patron saint
of fishermen) that the tsunami swept away.
I have to say that this was one of the most
meaningful experiences I have had in my life, an
insanity that I simply couldn’t say no to, even
though the physical and psychological toll was
overwhelming. I think I must have made over
12 trips between Puerto Montt and the dama-
ge zone, and covered almost 15,000 kilometers
delivering fiberglass, wooden planks, oil vats,
food, medicine, paint. And while it was a job that
I undertook as a personal initiative, I always was
able to count on the support of the incipient
Desafío Levantemos Chile and of Felipe Cubillos,
who was at my side either physically or by phone
constantly. His energy was so incredibly con-
tagious. For him anything was possible, but he
didn’t go around giving solutions. He did, howe-
ver, support each and every idea that anyone
would timidly suggest.

La ayuda que recibimos de Desafío Levantemos Chile fue súper valiosa.
80% de nuestros botes había quedado inutilizable y el resto en muy mal
estado. Y ellos nos enviaron los materiales para reparar las embarcaciones
que se pudieran rescatar, algunos motores e incluso pusieron a un maestro
que arregla botes a nuestra disposición. También nos entregaron una nueva
imagen de San Pedro, que para nosotros fue muy significativo pues en ese
momento representó una luz de esperanza para todos los que habíamos sido
golpeados por la fuerza de la naturaleza. Ahora tenemos la figura en la capilla,
pero una vez que se terminen los arreglos en el borde costero, queremos
llevarla para allá para que desde ahí nos siga cuidando y protegiendo.
The aid we received from Desafío Levantemos Chile was incalculable. 80% of our boats had been damaged beyond use,
and the rest were in terrible shape. So they sent us the materials we needed to repair the boats that were salvageable,
some motors, and they even sent us a boat builder to help repair boats. They also gave us a new San Pedro figure, which
was very meaningful for us because, at that moment, it was like a light of hope for all of us who had been so battered by
the forces of nature. Now we keep the figure in the chapel, but once the repair work along the coast is finished, we want
to take it out there so that it can continue to protect and look after us.

En esta caleta teníamos 330 hectáreas de
cultivo de algas, pero con el tsunami lo perdimos
todo. Incluso se modificó la topografía del lecho
submarino y es probable que nunca más se den
las condiciones necesarias para su cultivo. Desde
el año 82 estábamos dedicados por completo a
este negocio y las 770 familias que componemos
esta comunidad habíamos logrado salir de la
pobreza; prácticamente todos los habitantes de
Tubul dependíamos de las algas para subsistir.
Además perdimos gran parte de los botes y más
de la mitad de las casas se las llevó el agua o
quedaron en ruinas.
Pero junto a los voluntarios de Desafío, a las
donaciones de empresarios y al apoyo de capital
humano que ellos gestionaban, a nosotros no nos
faltó nada. Superada la emergencia, ahora cada
uno ha tenido que aprender a sobrevivir como
sea, porque las algas no volvieron. Mucha gente
se tuvo que ir a otras caletas; otros que habían
dedicado toda su vida al mar, cambiaron de rubro.
Yo opté por quedarme acá con mi familia. Es
difícil y sacrificado, pero si la gente del Desafío
nos enseñó a salir de la miseria cuando peor
estábamos, tengo todas las esperanzas puestas
en que los que quedamos seremos capaces de
reconstruirnos como caleta.
In this cove we had 330 hectares of seaweed
plants, but with the tsunami we lost everything.
The topography of the sea floor actually changed
and in all likelihood we will never again find
the same conditions which are needed to grow
seaweed. We have been in this business since
1982, and because of it the 770 families in this
community have managed to climb out of poverty;
practically all the residents of Tubul depend on
seaweed to get by. Plus, we lost a huge number
of boats and over half of the houses were either
swept away by the water or completely destroyed.
But together with the Desafío volunteers,
donations from the business community and
support from the human capital they generated, we
didn’t lack anything. Once we had gotten through
the emergency, each of us had to learn how to
survive however we could, because the seaweed
wasn’t going to come back. Lots of people had to
go to other bays, and others who had dedicated
their entire lives to the ocean, changed professions.
I opted to stay here with my family. It’s hard and
there are a lot of sacrifices, but the people from
Desafío taught us how to make it out of a miserable
situation when things were at their worst, and I
have all the hope in the world that those of us who
stayed will be able to rebuild this bay.

Con el tsunami nosotros perdimos todas nues-
tras herramientas, nos sentíamos derrotados,
queríamos irnos del astillero, incluso estábamos
dispuestos a dejar atrás 12 años de oficio. Pero
Felipe Cubillos y su equipo nos levantaron la
moral, nos dijeron que nos quedáramos, que nos
necesitaban, que quería que algún día le constru-
yéramos un velero de dos mástiles con ciprés de la
zona para recorrer el mundo. Él valoraba mucho
la tradición de este oficio en Constitución, y nos
bastó con que él creyera en nosotros para desper-
tar nuevamente esta verdadera vocación que es
nuestro trabajo. No necesitamos más ayuda que
esa para recuperar las ganas y seguir adelante.
Ahora solo nos queda pendiente hacer el velero de
sus sueños.

crushed, we wanted to leave the shipyard. We
were ready to give up 12 years of our craft, our
life. But Felipe Cubillos and his team lifted our
spirits, they told us to stay, they said they needed
us. They said they wanted us to build a two-mas-
ted sailboat for them one day, with local cypress
wood, so that they could circumnavigate the
world. He really valued the tradition of this craft
in Constitución, and the fact that he believed in us
was all that we needed to feel our true vocation,
our life’s work, reawakened. That was all the help
we needed to find our spirit and to move forward.
Now, all we have left is to build that sailboat, the
sailboat of his dreams.

Desafío estuvo estrechamente vinculado en la gestión del programa
tripartito denominado “Volvamos a la Mar”, con el objetivo de conseguir
capital destinado a la compra de motores y la reparación y adquisición
de botes y artes de pesca (redes, trajes, equipos de buceo, y otros).
El programa “Volvamos a la Mar” abarcó un total de 1.083 beneficiarios y
contempló la entrega de 284 embarcaciones, 671 motores fuera de borda
y 324 artes de pesca.

titled “Volvamos a la Mar,” aimed at securing capital for the purchase of motors
and the repair and acquisition of boats and fishing supplies (nets, suits, diving

Lo más notable de todo es que el día 20 de marzo inauguraremos la primera
de las escuelas (…) No sé si se lo imaginan bien, pero en tan solo 20 días los
alumnos de Iloca, Duao y La Pesca ya podrán ir al colegio (…) Les confieso que
hoy lloré, y de seguro el 20 también. Hay muchas empresas que están buscando
un proyecto trascendente y qué mejor que donar una escuela construida bajo
los mismos estándares de una escuela de California o Canadá.
The most remarkable thing of all is that on 20 March we will inaugurate the first of the schools (...) I

es que para prestar
ayuda eficaz es pri-
mordial escuchar las necesidades de las personas y
conocer su realidad en terreno. De poco y nada sirve
planificar desde una oficina, porque por muy genia-
les que parezcan las ideas, la mayoría de las veces
no están adaptadas a las verdaderas urgencias.
Después de apoyar a los pescadores como pri-
mera prioridad, nosotros creíamos que el próximo
paso era instalar un campamento para dar refugio
en Iloca. Y fue el propio alcalde quien nos hizo ver
que era una escuela, y no un campamento, lo que
realmente se necesitaba en esa localidad. Porque
si los niños volvían al colegio, las madres podrían
regresar a sus trabajos o continuar con las tareas
de limpieza, y los padres podrían retomar la pesca
o apoyar en los operativos de reconstrucción.
Al alcalde le prometí que en dos semanas esta-
ría de pie la nueva escuela. Ni él ni Felipe Cubillos
estaban muy convencidos de que pudiera ser
cierto, pero al cabo de una semana ya habíamos
entregado los primeros módulos. En torno a ese
sueño que veíamos concretarse, decidimos darle
una identidad a esta agrupación y llamarla Desa-
fío Levantemos Chile. Todo lo que vivimos en Iloca
fue muy emocionante. Me acuerdo perfecto de ese
día sábado, justo una semana después del terre-
moto, cuando empezaron a llegar los camiones en
caravana. La gente lloraba, aplaudía. Como que
nosotros tampoco alcanzábamos a dimensionar lo
que estaba sucediendo, la magnitud de toda esta
gestión. Lleno de banderas chilenas, se respiraba
ese patriotismo del chileno agradecido, aperrado,
que siempre se pone de pie ante la adversidad. Co-
incidió además, con que el niño apodado Zafrada
se hizo conocido en los medios. Él es alumno de la
escuela de Iloca, y de repente estaban todos los ca-
nales de televisión y los ojos puestos en la recons-
trucción de su colegio. Después fue el presidente
Piñera, hubo transmisiones en vivo, y así. Para no-
sotros, que partimos de manera tan anónima, era
increíble estar viviendo todo eso. Lo mismo recibir
ese agradecimiento de la gente que compartía con
nosotros hasta la última miga de pan.
Efectivamente había sido toda una hazaña cons-
truir el colegio de Iloca en tan poco tiempo y bajo
condiciones extremas, porque el nivel de devasta-
ción era total. Gracias al trabajo de más de 30 per-
sonas, la nueva escuela fue levantada en un récord
de solo siete días e inaugurada el 20 de marzo, tal
como lo habíamos prometido. Por lo mismo fue que
recibimos la invitación del ministro de Educación
(en ese entonces Joaquín Lavín), quien nos pidió
ayuda para resolver lo antes posible el regreso a
clases de todos los alumnos. Con un exhaustivo
recorrido y mucha gestión en terreno ayudamos a
corregir el diagnóstico de las escuelas de la Región
del Maule. Tal fue nuestro atrevimiento, que habla-
mos con el ministro y le dijimos que nos entregara
la región completa para reconstruir todas las escue-
las antes del 21 de abril.Y logramos la meta: 19.000
alumnos volvieron al colegio. Junto a este valioso
grupo humano que se fue formando, estuvimos
más de dos meses dedicados de lleno a alcanzar
ese objetivo. Éramos hombres y mujeres, jóvenes
y adultos que hasta entonces ni nos conocíamos
y para quienes la tarea de ayudar se convirtió en
parte de nuestras vidas. Como equipo nos transfor-
mamos en el puente entre los que pueden dar y los
que necesitan. Porque, a raíz del impacto mediático,
muchas compañías nos empezaron a contactar
para ofrecer ayuda.Y nosotros a vincular esa ayuda
con necesidades concretas.Y así comenzó todo.

ne of the most
important lessons
we learned after
the earthquake,
and which is now
a cornerstone of
the foundation, is
that to deliver effective aid you have to listen to
people’s needs and understand their reality in
person. It is of little or no use to plan from an offi-
ce, because no matter how ingenious your ideas
might seem, most of the time they do not respond
to the most pressing needs.
After lending support to the fishermen as a first
priority, we believed that the next step was to set
up a campsite to offer shelter to the residents of
Iloca. But it was Iloca’s mayor who made us see
that a school, not a campsite, was what the town
most urgently needed. Because if the children
could get back to school, their mothers could get
back to work or continue with the cleanup efforts,
and their fathers could get back to fishing or to
working on the reconstruction projects.
I promised the mayor that in two weeks the
new school would be up and running. Neither he
nor Felipe Cubillos were very convinced that this
was possible, but by the end of one week we had
already set up the first units. As we began to see
our dream come to life, we decided it was time to
give our collective an identity, and we named it
Desafío Levantemos Chile. We were so touched by
everything we experienced in Iloca. I remember
that Saturday so perfectly, exactly one week after
the earthquake, when the truck convoy arrived.
People cried, applauded. I think even we had a
hard time processing all that was happening, the
magnitude of the operation. With Chilean flags
waving everywhere, the air was filled with the
patriotic spirit of grateful, hardworking Chileans,
the kind that always put one foot in front of the
other. This was right about the time when the little
boy named Zafrada became known in the news.
He is a student at the Iloca school, and suddenly
all the television stations were here, their eyes on
the reconstruction of the boy’s school. President
Piñera came, there were live broadcasts, and so
on. For us, having started everything out in such
an anonymous way, it was especially incredible to
be part of all that, and to receive the gratitude of
people who shared with us, quite literally, all they
had, down to the last crumb of bread.
In fact, it had been quite a feat to build the Iloca
school in such a short period of time and under
such extreme conditions, because the level of
destruction was total. Thanks to the work of over
30 people, the new school was built in record time,
seven days, and opened on 20 March, as promised.
Joaquín Lavín, the Education Minister at the time,
called us to see if we might help, as quickly as pos-
sible, getting all the children affected by the ear-
thquake back to school. Following an exhaustive
surveying trip, and a great deal of on-site work, we
helped correct the diagnosis of the schools in the
Maule region. We were quite bold: when we spoke
to the minister we told him to give us the entire
region because we would rebuild all the schools by
21 April. And we did it: 19,000 students returned
to school. This remarkable group of people came
together and for two months devoted themselves
exclusively to that goal. We were men and women,
young and old, strangers to one another until then,
and yet for all of us this work became part of our
lives. As a team we became a bridge between those
who could give and those in need. And as a result
of the major media coverage, a number of com-
panies contacted us with offers of help. And we
connected that help to specific needs. That’s how it
all got started.

Soy ingeniero comercial y recién había salido de la universidad el verano
antes del terremoto. Tenía planificado viajar tres días después, pero ante la
gravedad de lo que había pasado decidí quedarme y ofrecer mi ayuda. Yo
conocía a Felipe Cubillos hacía mucho tiempo por la vela, me enteré que
estaba en la zona costera preocupado de los pescadores, y lo llamé para ver
qué podía hacer yo. Inmediatamente me dijo que me necesitaba, pero no en
la reconstrucción de botes, sino que me hiciera cargo de un nuevo proyecto:
la reconstrucción de las escuelas. Acepté incluso sin saber muy bien de qué
se trataba. Al día siguiente ya estaba recorriendo la zona con otro voluntario
(Sergio Calvo) para ver en terreno qué había pasado. Desde ese día no
paramos más. Sabíamos que si los alumnos no volvían a clases a más tardar
en abril, perderían el año escolar.
El gobierno le propuso al Desafío lograr juntos la meta, porque parecía
inalcanzable. Nosotros nos haríamos cargo de la VII Región y el ministerio
de Educación tomaba la VIII Región, con el compromiso mutuo que todos
los alumnos estuvieran en clases antes del 26 de abril. En ese momento,
en nuestra región eran 30 mil escolares los que todavía no habían vuelto al
colegio, y en la VIII Región eran aproximadamente la mitad, unos 15 mil.
Quedaba poco más de un mes para que se cumpliera esa fecha, pero lo
logramos: en 40 días construimos 22 escuelas. Y todos volvieron al colegio.
I studied business, and had just graduated the summer before the
earthquake. I had been planning to travel three days after, but when I
realized the gravity of the situation I decided to stay and see if I could help
in some way. I had known Felipe Cubillos for some time, through sailing, and
when I heard that he was in the coastal region helping the fishermen, I called
him up to see what I could do. Right away he said he needed me, but not for
rebuilding boats. He wanted me to take charge of a new project rebuilding
schools. I said yes, though I wasn’t quite sure what I would be doing. By the
next day I was traveling through the region with another volunteer (Sergio
Calvo) to see the damage firsthand. From that day onward, we never stopped.
We knew that if the students weren’t back in class by April at the latest, they
would lose the entire school year.
The government asked Desafío to take on this challenge as a joint effort,
because it seemed impossible. We would be responsible for Region VII and
the Education Ministry would take care of Region VIII, with the mutual
commitment to bring all the kids back to school before 26 April. At that time,
30,000 schoolchildren had yet to get back to school in Region VII, and in
Region VIII, it was around half that number, close to 15,000. We had barely
more than a month to meet our deadline, but we did it: in 40 days we built 22
modular schools. And all the kids went back to school.

Soy ex alumno de esta escuela y la vida me dio
la satisfacción de verme convertido en su director.
Llevo 25 años, tiempo que me ha hecho tomarles
tanto cariño a los alumnos, que los siento como
propios. Por eso la noche del terremoto yo solo
pensaba en mi escuela. Al día siguiente me
vine temprano a ver cómo había quedado y
simplemente me puse a llorar. Estaba en ruinas,
se había venido abajo. La Escuela Superior de
Hombres de Molina es la más antigua de la
comuna, mis alumnos son niños sumamente
pobres, y la verdad es que sin la ayuda del Desafío,
nosotros hubiésemos desaparecido.
Me acuerdo que cuando conocí a Felipe Cubillos
lo primero que me dijo fue que la reconstrucción
de la escuela dependía en gran parte de mí,
que sería un trabajo en conjunto, que yo tenía
que estar dispuesto a aceptar ese desafío para
alcanzar la meta. Inmediatamente me sentí
un integrante más del equipo. Y ni hablar de la
felicidad de los niños cuando volvieron a clases;
no lo podían creer. Pero lo más lindo es que ellos
vieron que los sueños sí se cumplen, que un
colegio destruido sí se puede volver a construir, y
ese mensaje marcará sus vidas para siempre.
I’m an alumnus of this school and becoming
its principal is one of the great satisfactions of my
life. In the 25 years I have been here I have become
so fond of the children that they feel like family.
That’s why on the night of the earthquake all I
could think about was my school. The next day,
I got up early to see how it had fared, and I just
broke down in tears. It had collapsed, it was rubble.
The Molina Secondary School for Boys is the oldest
in the district, and my students are very poor. And
the truth is that without the help we received from
Desafío, we would have disappeared.
I remember when I met Felipe Cubillos, the
first thing he said to me was that rebuilding the
school would depend to a large degree on me,
that it would be a team effort, and that I had to
be ready to take on the challenge if we wanted to
achieve our goal. Instantly I felt like a member
of the team. And the joy of those children when
they returned to school, I can’t begin to describe
it. They couldn’t believe their eyes. The most
wonderful thing of all is that they saw that
dreams can come true, that a demolished school
can be brought back to life. And that message will
stay with them for the rest of their lives.

Antes de la tragedia a nosotros no nos conocía nadie, por eso me parece
tan increíble que gracias al equipo de Desafío Levantemos Chile, el ministro
de Educación de entonces, Joaquín Lavín, haya inaugurado aquí el año esco-
lar después del terremoto. Ellos nos sacaron a flote en lo material, que era
determinante ante la pérdida total, pero además nos dieron nuevas razones
para luchar y seguir adelante.
En la escuela no somos los mismos después de esa experiencia. Nos marcó
y remeció ver la energía, compromiso y organización de la gente de la Fun-
dación; ser testigos de que las metas más imposibles se pueden alcanzar con
dedicación, con optimismo, creyendo en uno mismo y también creyendo en
los demás.
Los profesores rurales estamos acostumbrados a las falencias, a trabajar
en condiciones precarias, pero ahora tenemos esta escuela que es un verda-
dero privilegio. Por lo tanto, es nuestro deber aprovechar esta oportunidad
que nos dio la vida para que nuestros alumnos desarrollen al máximo su
potencial. Y creo que Desafío resume y refleja muy bien los valores que noso-
tros queremos inculcar en ellos. Porque, sin duda, soñamos con que obtengan
grandes reconocimientos profesionales, pero en su desarrollo y en potenciar
su calidad humana está nuestro mayor desafío.
Before the tragedy nobody knew us; that’s why it’s so incredible to me that
thanks to the team at Desafío Levantemos Chile, the Education Minister at
the time, Joaquín Lavín, celebrated the start of the school year here, after the
earthquake. They rescued us in material terms, which was critical because
we had lost everything, but they also gave us reasons to keep fighting and to
move forward.
Here at the school, the experience changed us; none of us will ever be the
same. We were deeply touched and inspired by the energy, the commitment,
and the organization of the people from the foundation. We are witnesses to
the fact that the most impossible goals can be achieved with dedication and
optimism, if you believe in yourself and in others, as well.
Rural schoolteachers are used to going without, to working in precarious
conditions, but the school we have now is a true privilege, and because of this
we have an obligation to take advantage of this opportunity that life has
given us, so that our students can develop their potential to the fullest extent
possible. And I believe that Desafío really embodies and reflects the values
that we want to instill in our kids. Because of course we hope that they will
go on to earn great professional recognition, but cultivating and encouraging
their human qualities is our greatest challenge of all.

Pero no queríamos hacer simplemente una
donación monetaria a través de la fundación.
Para nosotros era importante generar un lazo,
poner a disposición de los liceos nuestro tiempo y
presencia. Vincularnos, participar.
Esta relación con Desafío Levantemos Chile
también era un desafío a que, a través de un
gesto de solidaridad, nuestra empresa viviera
su propia experiencia de cambio. Por eso
organizamos visitas desde Santiago con nuestros
trabajadores para ayudar a limpiar, ordenar,
pintar y ser de utilidad en lo que pudiéramos en
la reconstrucción y en la vuelta a clases. Todos
los que iban regresaban impactados por el nivel
de destrucción, pero a la vez maravillados por la
oportunidad de sentirse útiles. Y ese particular
encuentro con el otro y con uno mismo también
repercutió de manera increíble a nivel de empresa.
Al final te das cuenta de que tu equipo
recibió mucho más de lo que dio, porque las
transformaciones dentro de SKBergé fueron en
directa relación con los valores asociados al sueño
que compartíamos con Felipe Cubillos, y que son
los mismos que pretendemos construir como
compañía: el trabajo en equipo, la determinación,
la perseverancia, la solidaridad y la pasión, entre
tantos otros. Y ese tremendo regalo y oportunidad
no se da todos los días.
As a company we adopted two schools, Abate
Molina and José Manuel Balmaceda, in Talca. But
we didn’t want to just make a monetary donation
through the foundation. For us it was very
important to establish a link, to give these schools
our time and our presence. To become connected,
to participate.
Our relationship with Desafío Levantemos
Chile also represented a challenge to company: to
experience our own process of change through this
act of solidarity. It was with this in mind that we
organized employee trips from Santiago, to help
clean up, organize, paint and be useful in whatever
way we could in the reconstruction effort and
in getting the children back to school. Everyone
who went out on these trips returned to Santiago
overwhelmed by the devastation, but also by the
opportunity of feeling useful. That very particular
encounter with our fellow man and with ourselves
also had an incredible effect on the company.
In the end you realize that your team got
back much more than it gave, because the
transformations this experience brought to
SKBergé were directly related to the values
associated with the dream we shared with Felipe
Cubillos, the same values we aim to build as a
company: teamwork, determination, perseverance,
solidarity and passion, among many others. And
that tremendous gift, that opportunity, is not the
kind of thing that happens every day.

Chile tenemos una deuda impagable. Durante
semanas estuvieron viniendo diariamente
voluntarios de la empresa SKBergé para
prestarnos ayuda. Salían muy temprano desde
Santiago, llegaban acá a las 9:00 y trabajaban
todo el día divididos en equipos con distintas
tareas. A ellos no solo tengo que agradecerles
la enorme donación en lo económico, porque
el apoyo y compañía de su gente fue clave para
volver a ponernos de pie. Nosotros estábamos
tremendamente afectados, la mayoría había
vivido una experiencia muy traumática con el
terremoto. No sabíamos por dónde empezar.
Pero gracias a la inyección de energía, cariño
y eficiencia de las personas de dicha empresa,
todos en el liceo nos fuimos contagiando. Tanto,
que ese año tuvimos un resultado sorprendente e
inesperado en la PSU, alcanzando la mayor alza de
puntajes en toda la historia del liceo.
We have a debt to the people at Desafío
Levantemos Chile that we can never possibly
repay. For weeks, volunteers from SKBergé would
come to help us every day. They would leave
Santiago very early in the morning, arrive here
at 9am and work all day, in groups focused on
specific tasks. I am deeply grateful to them for
the enormous financial donation they made to
us, but also for the support and company of their
employees, who were crucial in helping us bounce
back. We were terribly distraught over what had
happened, for most of us the earthquake was
an extremely traumatic experience. We didn’t
know where to start. But the energy, affection
and efficiency of the people from SKBergé were
contagious, and touched everyone at the school—
so much that we had shockingly high results
on the PSU (Prueba de Selección Universitaria,
University Selection Exam) that year—the greatest
jump in scores in the history of the school.

Nosotros somos una empresa pequeña, con
poco más de 30 personas, lo que nos permite
tener una relación bien cercana como equipo.
Pero desde que decidimos apadrinar a la Escuela
de Quinahue a través de Desafío, se ha generado
un vínculo mucho más estrecho entre nosotros.
Como grupo humano ahora no solo nos une el
desempeño laboral, sino que el compromiso que
adquirimos con esos niños. Un compromiso que
va más allá de lo urgente, porque decidimos que
la ayuda se mantuviera en el tiempo; que va más
allá de lo económico, pues quisimos involucrarnos
con la comunidad, conocernos, e incluir a
nuestras familias.
Somos una empresa agradecida de los éxitos
que hemos conseguido y creemos firmemente
en el deber de ayudar a los que tienen
más necesidades. Pero insertos en el rubro
financiero, estamos sumergidos en un mundo
diametralmente opuesto al que gira en torno
a una escuela rural, donde los parámetros de
felicidad y éxito son tan distintos. Hay tanto que

We are a small company, just over 30 people,
which allows us to maintain a very close
relationship as a team. But ever since making the
decision to adopt the Quinahue school through
Desafío, we share a far stronger bond. As a
group we are united not just by our professional
work but by the commitment we made to those
children. It is a commitment that goes beyond

community, get to know one another, and involve

Siempre nos ha ido bien en
la prueba nacional Simce, pero
como somos una escuela chica,
lamentablemente no aparecemos en
ninguna parte. Es una pena, porque
sentimos que no se valora el trabajo
educativo que estamos haciendo
acá, el esfuerzo de los niños y de
los padres, porque es una tarea que
hacemos entre todos. Sin estímulos
es natural que el entusiasmo
decaiga, y nosotros no podemos
decaer. Por eso a la comunidad le
ha hecho tanto bien la presencia de
Desafío Levantemos Chile. Ellos nos
levantaron la escuela, el corazón, el
ánimo, la esperanza. Todo.
We’ve always done well on the
SIMCE (Sistema de Medición de
Calidad de la Educación, System
for Measuring Quality in Education)
test, but since we’re a small school,
unfortunately nobody ever hears
about us, which is a shame, because
it makes us feel that people don’t
appreciate the educational work we
do here, or the efforts of the children
and their parents, because it’s a job
that we are all involved in. Without
encouragement, people’s enthusiasm
dips, and we can’t let that happen.
That’s why the presence of Desafío
Levantemos Chile has had such a
positive effect on the community.

En Chile hay muchas personas que no han
tenido una oportunidad. Y en un país donde
los empresarios somos pocos, tenemos el deber
y la obligación de construir una sociedad más
justa, avanzar hacia la igualdad, y para eso es
fundamental mejorar la calidad de la educación.
Tengo una visión muy positiva del sector privado,
siento que hay mucha disposición y corazón, por
eso hay que aprovechar la posibilidad de ayudar
que nos ofrece Desafío Levantemos Chile. En
mi caso, yo tengo sociedad con dos españoles,
también agricultores, y admito que de ellos nació
la idea de colaborar con la reconstrucción. Son
muy agradecidos de nuestro país y sintieron la
necesidad de retribuir ese cariño. Felizmente la
donación llegó a manos de la Escuela Superior
de Hombres de Molina, porque creemos que solo
invirtiendo en educación podremos tener ese
mejor país con el que todos soñamos.
In Chile there are a lot of people who
lack opportunities. And in a country where
businessmen are few and far between, we have
the obligation and the responsibility to build a
society that is fairer, to move toward equality,
and if we want to reach that goal improving the
quality of education is essential.
I have a very positive image of the private
sector, I feel there is a lot of heart and a lot of
willingness there, and for that reason we have to
take advantage of the opportunity to help that
Desafío Levantemos Chile is offering us. In my
case, I have two partners, farmers like me, only
they are from Spain, and I must admit that the
idea of helping the reconstruction efforts was
their idea. They are very grateful to this country
and they felt compelled to reciprocate in some
way for the kindness they have received. We
were thrilled to see that our donation went to the
Molina Secondary School for Boys because we
believe that only by investing in education will
we be able to create that “better country” we all
dream about.

Nosotros también hemos aprendido a ayudar a otras personas que lo
necesitan. La otra vez fuimos al asilo de ancianos para llevarles cosas a los
abuelitos. Y les cantamos, y les dimos bebidas, dulces y galletas. Estaban
felices y quedamos de ir de nuevo. Nos dimos cuenta de que hay muchos
viejitos abandonados.
We also learned about helping others in need. Recently we went to a rest home, to bring things to the old people. And
we sang to them, we gave them drinks, candy, cookies. It made them happy, and we told them we would come back. We
realized that there are so many old people who have been left all alone.

Esta población estaba súper estigmatizada,
porque efectivamente el entorno es complicado,
con un pasado muy difícil. La escuela se caía
a pedazos y a los alumnos, incluso, les daba
vergüenza decir que estudiaban acá. Incluso
cuando Felipe Cubillos vino por primera vez dijo
algo muy cierto: ‘Los niños de este colegio no son
damnificados del terremoto, son damnificados de
la vida’, porque efectivamente desde mucho antes
nosotros funcionábamos en condiciones mínimas.
La reconstrucción de nuestra escuela le cambió
la cara y la actitud a toda la comunidad. Acá se
armó una verdadera fiesta cuando empezaron
a llegar los camiones con los módulos y los
voluntarios. La gente salía a las calles, lloraba,
tomaba fotos. Y hoy es un orgullo enorme. No
hay ningún papel en el suelo, los muros no tienen
ningún grafiti, nada, mientras que las paredes
de toda la población sí están rayadas. Eso habla
de una transformación profunda y significativa.
Cuento otra anécdota: cuando inauguramos la
escuela, formé a todos los alumnos y profesores
en un acto de mucha solemnidad y les dije que
este nuevo colegio era de todos, y que en los
lavamanos de los baños los tapones estaban
sin una cadena que los mantuviera fijos. Que
eso era intencional porque en esta escuela no
hay ladrones, y si uno de los tapones se perdía,
significaba que un ladrón se nos había infiltrado.
Desde el 8 de mayo de 2011, día que se inauguró el
nuevo colegio, todos los tapones siguen en su sitio.
Eso es tremendamente valioso considerando
que nuestros niños provienen de familias de muy
escasos recursos, expuestos a la delincuencia
y las drogas, con dificultadas de aprendizaje y
problemas conductuales bien complejos. Nuestro
lema es educar sin discriminar, acá recibimos
a todos los alumnos, provengan de donde
provengan, porque soy un convencido de que
la educación es una herramienta efectiva para
superar las brechas sociales que aíslan a este
segmento de la población. Y mi desafío personal
es que en un futuro cercano podamos mirar hacia
atrás y ver que logramos hacer un cambio, que
de acá salieron profesionales exitosos cuando
nadie daba un peso por ellos. Pero por sobre todo,
buenas personas, hombres y mujeres felices,
honrados, correctos. De bien.

This community is incredibly stigmatized
because the environment is very difficult,
and it has a very complex history. This school
was literally falling to pieces; students were
embarrassed to tell people that they went here.
Even when Felipe Cubillos came here for the
first time, he said something that was very true:
“The children at this school aren’t victims of the
earthquake, they’re victims of life,” because for
a long time before [the earthquake] we were just
barely functioning.
The reconstruction of this school changed
the appearance and the attitude of the entire
community. We celebrated sincerely when the
trucks began arriving with the units and the
volunteers. People poured out into the streets,
crying, taking photos. And now it is an enormous
source of pride. There isn’t a single scrap of paper
on the floor and the walls are free of graffiti, even
though there is writing on the walls of the other
buildings nearby. This speaks of a profound,
meaningful transformation. Here’s another story:
when we opened the school, I held a very solemn
ceremony with all the students and teachers, and
I told them that this school belonged to everyone,
and that in there would be stoppers in all the
bathroom sinks, but without chains anchoring
them. I explained that this was intentional,
because there are no thieves in our school, and
that if one of the stoppers went missing, it meant
that a thief had infiltrated our school. Ever since
8 May 2011, the day we opened the new school,
all our sink stoppers are right where they were.
This is especially poignant when you consider
that our kids come from very low-income
families, they’ve been exposed to crime and
drugs, they deal with learning disabilities and
complex behavior problems. Our slogan is
“education without discrimination:” we receive
all kinds of student here, no matter where they
are from, because I firmly believe that education
is an effective tool for overcoming the social
gaps that isolate this segment of the population.
And my personal challenge is, in the foreseeable
future, to be able to look back and say that we
were able to make a difference, that successful
professionals could come out of here when
nobody thought they would ever amount to
anything. But more importantly, that this school
educated good people, men and women who are
happy, honorable, true. Good people.

Este era un colegio muy
discriminado, pero ahora la gente
habla bien de nosotros. En ningún
otro colegio hay tantos talleres como
acá: de arte, teatro, judo, folclore.
¡Si mis niñas casi no tienen tiempo,
están en todas! Los profesores y
el director son como verdaderos
papás de los alumnos, pero también
aconsejan mucho a los apoderados;
ayudan a nuestras familias mucho
más allá de las puertas del colegio.
Por eso yo sé que gracias a esta
oportunidad que nos dio Desafío,
nuestros hijos van a ser diferentes.
Y si quieren ser profesionales, que
luchen por sus sueños, ya veremos
cómo costearlo. Acá yo he vuelto a
creer que todo es posible.
There was a lot of prejudice
against this school before, but now
people speak highly of us. There isn’t
a single other school with as many
workshops as we have here: art,
theater, judo, folklore. My daughters
have no free time at all, practically,
they’re in all of them! The teachers
and the principal are like parents
to the kids, but they also advise the
parents a lot, helping our families
far beyond the doors to the school.
That’s why I know our kids will be
different, thanks to the chance that
Desafío gave us. And if they want to
be professionals, they have to fight
for their dreams, we’ll figure out how
to pay for it. Here, they restored my
belief that anything is possible.

Tuvimos la oportunidad de colaborar en la
construcción de la escuela de Dichato, dos
restoranes en caleta Tumbes y la actual sede
de Desafío en Santiago. Pero creo que nuestro
proyecto más emblemático fue levantar la escuela
Brilla El Sol. Nos habían dicho que tuviéramos
mucho cuidado, que nos tocaría trabajar en una
población muy peligrosa, pero la experiencia
fue todo lo contrario. La gente fue sumamente
cariñosa, nos cuidaban mucho, se notaba que
con la escuela nueva había entrado un rayo de
luz a la comunidad. Los vecinos estaban súper
impactados de que hubiéramos hecho una
construcción nueva, impecable y eficiente. Y en
tan poco tiempo.
Cuando tienes una infraestructura de primer
nivel, inmediatamente la vara queda más alta.
El rigor del edificio te obliga a estar a otra altura.
Porque en un colegio feo y malo, es mucho más
probable que los alumnos estén desmotivados
y que a los profesores les cueste muchísimo
destacarse como educadores. Pero si tienes un
colegio que cumple los más altos estándares, ya
no puedes culpar al entorno, ahora depende de
ti, y en eso, creemos, radica el valor de tener una
infraestructura adecuada.

We had the opportunity to work on the
construction of the school in Dichato, two
restaurants in Tumbes bay, and the present
headquarters of Desafío in Santiago. But I think
our most emblematic project was building the
Brilla el Sol school. Everyone had warned us to be
very careful, because we would be working in a
very dangerous neighborhood, but our experience
was the absolute opposite. People were amazingly
welcoming, they looked after us, you could see
that with the new school a ray of light had come
into the community. The local residents were
stunned that we had been able to build such an
impeccable new building. And in record time.
When you have infrastructure that is first-
rate, the bar is immediately set higher. The high
standards of the building force you to strive for
another level. Because in an ugly, bad school,
it is far more likely that the students will be
discouraged and the professors will have a hard
time excelling as educators. But if you have a
school that meets the highest standards, you can
no longer blame the environment. Now it’s up
to you. And that, we believe, is the value of an
adequate infrastructure.
