G___________ F__________ A______________ Romans ___:___-___ Luke ___:___-___ Be Jesus for the World On Sunday we discussed the nature of Jesus, and how He grew in favor with God. When we examine how, we learn the same. There is no one we should seek to please more than our Heavenly Father. The reading is found in Luke 2:52. “And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man.” The question remains. How can we please God and man at the same time? These two seem to contradict themselves. If I seek to please God, pretty soon man will not be happy about it. If I seek to please man, one could assume that God would stop being pleased. Paul agrees with this concept in speaking with the Galatians. “As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed. For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ” (Galatians 1:9–10). There is a direct link to our key passage and another young man in history: Samuel. “Now the boy Samuel continued to grow both in stature and in favor with the Lord and also with man” (1 Samuel 2:26). The word “now” reveals the context (verses 22-25) that Samuel’s conduct is found to be in contrast to the sons of Eli. Eli was receiving reports from all the people that his sons were assaulting the women who were coming to serve in the temple. Verse 24 reveals that God was going to put the men to death over this evil. So, when someone commits evil atrocities, they will not find favor with God or man. When someone is righteous, it will bring a refreshing and glad change to the evil experienced by God and man. This is what Jesus brought as He increased in wisdom and stature and favor with God and man. His life exuded light in a dark world! “And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God” (John 3:19-21) Jesus is the light that brings favor for God and man. Be Jesus for the world. ~Notes from the Harp
