We Can Choose
We were truly blessed in our society with the oppor-
tunity to vote this past Tuesday. Regardless of the
outcome, we chose to cast our vote or not to cast it. I am reminded of the choice
set before the Roman Christians in the 1st
Century. “Let every person be subject to
the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that
exist have been instituted by God” (Romans 13:1). Who was in power in Roman
government during the time of the book of Romans? It was written by Paul around
A.D. 57. Nero reigned from A.D 54-68. His reputation had already been well
known by the time Paul writes this letter to the Christians in Rome. Nero lived a
disturbing personal life where he had his own mother and wife killed, and possibly
his half brother. In 64, he is credited with the burning of Rome in order to build a
bigger palace. He blamed Christians to remove the suspicion from him, which led
to a severe persecution of the church and possibly led to the death of both Paul and
Peter 1
.
Yet, Paul wrote that we are to be subject to the governing authorities as they
are “elected” by God. Nero was an evil dictator, and God used him for His own
purpose. We as United States citizens have a vote in an election that Roman Chris-
tians never had. Regardless of our choice for presidential candidate, God’s elect,
his church, will thrive in this world regardless of the government appointed over
us. The early Christians endured much more difficulty and persecution without a
say in their government. I am sure that no Roman Christian would have ever voted
for Nero or any candidate that resembled the evil, corrupt system of the Roman
dictatorship. Yet, they were subject to God which brought obedience to Rome.
While we have a choice, may we always remember that God has a plan in this life,
and He can use all manner of people to establish it. If He appointed Nero for His
purpose, He can use anyone we choose to appoint. (I am writing this on the day we
cast our vote.) May our prayers be with this nation in the coming days concerning
this process. What a wonderful blessing we have in this country that we can
choose. Today, I choose to Be Kind.

What the Bible says about
giving to God?
2 Corinthians 9:6-8
Each of you should give what you
have decided in your heart to give,
not reluctantly or under compulsion,
for God loves a cheerful giver.
And God is able to bless you abun-
dantly, so that in all things at all times,
having all that you need, you will
abound in every good work.
