2. What do you mean by Production Planning and
Control? Briefly discuss various factors of
Production planning and control (2010 ET)
What is Production Control? (2009 VS)
Production planning and control, two functions
but sole object” comment on the statement.
(2008 S)
Define Production Control. Explain the various
techniques or methods of production control.
(2007 ET)
3. Production planning cannot be properly
achieved without an effective system of
production control.
Production control involves implementing the
production plans in accordance with the
planned schedules by coordinating different
activities. It seeks to ensure that production
operations occur according to planned
operations.
4. E.F.L. Brech, “Production control is a specific
application of the control function, and is
concerned with recording results and
correcting for deviations from programmes
and variations from standards”
William Voris, “Production control is the task
of coordinating manufacturing activities in
accordance with manufacturing plans so that
preconceived schedules can be attained with
optimum economy and efficiency.”
5. Important task of Production Management
Coordinates production functions with
Production Planning
Regulation and inspection of Production
activities
Production as per planning
Wide scope (Quantity, Cost, Time, Quality
control etc. included)
Regulates the orderly flow of materials within
the plant from the raw state to the finished
products
6. To achieve production targets and goals
To ensure smooth production by removing
difficulties in the production process.
To coordinate machines, tools, labour and
materials for optimum utilisation of
resources.
To minimise cost of production and to
maintain quality of output.
To guide purchase and supply of materials to
suit production rate.
To control inventories
7. Supplementary Planning : for completing the main
planning, daily wok supplementary planning is
done. It is known as Programming
Scheduling : as per master schedule, production
schedule is done.
Dispatching : it means giving working order as per
production schedule
8. Surveillance : Supervisor, Foreman, etc. are
appointed who gives their reports daily to senior
officers.
Direction : Supervisor and Foreman provides
important direction to employees on their
supervision and inspection
Improvement : Supervisor can remove the defect
falling under his area of influence but other
reasons he’ll have to inform senior officers.
9. Production Planning is done before the
production process where as Control is done
while production process is on.
If the planning is good but control is not done
properly then planning could fail. By control
process, deficiency of planning could be found,
similarly without planning, control is impossible,
because through planning it self defines the
standards, quality, quantity, etc. Production
Planning and Control are related functions, and
impossible without each other.
10. Optimal utilisation of economic resource of
Nation
Production at possible lowest cost
Avoidance of rush orders.
Meeting production targets.
Better use of plant and machinery
Inventory control
Proper liaison and coordination
Industrial peace
