1. Kottayam district is a beautiful district in
Kerala with the natural beauty of hills,
backwaters and lakes. Most of the places in
Kottayam are hilly regions like Vagamon,
Elaveezhapoonchira etc. Kumarakom, known
all over the world for its exotic backwaters, is
situated about 12 km from Kottayam town.

2. Kumarakom is situated 12 km away from
Kottayam, on the banks of Lake
Vembanad. A Bird Sanctury is located at
Kavanattinkara near Kumarakom. The Bird
Sanctuary is now a major tourist attraction
and has been bought under the jurisdiction
of KTDC (Kerala Tourism Development
Corporation).
3. Vaikom Mahadeva temple is located at
Vaikom, about 40 km awaya from
Kottayam. The Mahadeva Temple at
Vaikom is one of the most famous and
oldest Siva temples in Kerala. The
utsavam in this temple is celebrated for
twelve days during the dark lunar fortnight
of Vrischikam
4. Mahadeva Temple at Ettumanoor is
located 13 km away from Kottayam
town.The 'Ezharaponnana' and
'Kedavilakku' of this temple is famous.
Myths have it that the Pandavas and the
sage Vyasa had worshipped at this temple.
The arattu festival of this temple is
celebrated on a grand scale on the
Thiruvathira day in Kumbham (February-
March) every year.
5. Erumeli situated 60 km away from
Kottayam on the banks of Manimala River.
A famous Sastha Temple and Mosque of
'Vavar', who is believed to be the friend of
Sri Ayyappa are the places of attraction to
the tourists. Petta Thullal at Erumeli is
actually a mass frenzied dancing
accompanied by loud music created by
traditional instruments of this region.
6. The Saraswathi Temple known as 'Dakshina
Mookambika temple' is situated at
Panachikkad about 10 km from Kottayam on
the way to Changanasseri. This temple is as
famous as the Mookambika temple at Kolloor.
The presiding deity is Goddess Saraswathi,
the Goddess of Knowledge and Learning. The
main event of celebration in this temple is the
Saraswati Pooja festival, which is observed
during the September-October period. The
nine day festival 'Navarathri' is famous here.
7. Koottikkal is a beautiful tourist place in the
forest situated in the western ghats 5 km from
Mundakkayam in Kottayam District. There are
streams and waterfalls in the surrounding
places. The artificial lake created in the
Manimala river by the Check-dam and the
waterfalls at Vadakkemala near Koottikkal are
the peculiarities of this place. Rubber
plantation is a prime crop in Koottikkal valley.
The old-world charm of British Plantations is
still around with purity of village life.
8. Wagamon is a hill top resort near Palai,in
Kottayam District. Vagamon, situated 60
km away from Kottayam, at a height of
1100 m above sea level. It is a suitable
place for mountaineering. The Kurisumala
and Kurisumala Hermitage here are
famous pilgrim centres. The area is full of
Tea estates.The breeding centre of the
Kerala Live Stock Board is located here
