The Baily Thomas Charitable Fund (UK and Republic of Ireland)
The Baily Thomas Charitable Fund is a registered charity which was established primarily
to aid the research into learning disability and to aid the care and relief of those affected
by learning disability by making grants to voluntary organisations working in this field. The
Trust consider under learning disability the conditions generally referred to as severe
learning difficulties, together with autism. In this area, they consider projects concerning
children or adults.
Learning disability, thus defined, is a priority for funding. They will not offer grants for
research into or care of those with mental illness or dyslexia. Application for funding is
normally considered for capital and revenue costs and for both specific projects and for
general running/core costs.
They offer grants from £250 and is dependant on a number of factors including the
purpose, the total funding requirement and the potential sources of other funds including,
in some cases, matching funding. Applications will only be considered from voluntary
organisations which are registered charities or are associated with a registered charity.
The next deadline for applications is 1st May 2009.

2. Gannett Foundation
The Gannett Foundation is the charitable arm of Gannett Co Inc., owner of the
Newsquest Media Group, one of the UK’s largest publishers.
The Gannett Foundation provides funding to support local organisations in the area
where Newsquest operates in the UK. The Quartet Community Foundation, on
behalf of the Gannett Foundation and Newsquest, manages the Fund.
The Gannett Foundation supports projects which take a creative approach to
fundamental issues such as education and neighbourhood improvements,
economic development, youth development, community problem solving,
assistance to disadvantaged people, environmental conservation and cultural
enrichment.

Grants will not be given to:

Grants will be for between £1000 and £5000 but larger grants may be made for
exceptional projects.
Applications are invited from areas where a newspaper owned by Newsquest Media
Group circulates. Applications must be submitted on the approved application form,
which may be completed online or obtained from your local Newsquest newspaper
office.
The completed form should be sent to the local newspaper office address. Do not
send applications to Newsquest Media Group.
UK Grants are made twice a year. The times are publicised in the local newspapers.
The newspaper will expect you to co-operate with reasonable requests for publicity
of any grant given.

3. The Tesco Charity Trust Community Award Guidelines
The Tesco Charity Trust has been in existence since 1987 and supports local
charities and not-for-profit organisations, and also gives a 20% top-up to monies
raised by Tesco employees for charity.
Community Awards Scheme criteria:
The Tesco Charity Trust Community Awards Scheme provides one-off donations
of between £1,000 and £4,000. The funding they give goes towards providing
practical benefits, such as equipment and resources for projects that directly
benefit children, the elderly and adults and children with disabilities, living in the
local communities around stores in the UK.

There are two categories of Community Awards:
1. Grants to support children’s welfare and/or children’s educations (including

4. Ibrahim Foundation
The Ibrahim Foundation is a private independent grant making foundation that
makes grants to organisations which aim to improve the quality of life for people
and communities in the UK, both now and in the future.

The Diageo Foundation
Diageo Foundation's aim is to create positive, long-term change in the community. It focuses on areas of

donations made from the Diageo Foundation must be for charitable purposes, i.e. the relief of poverty, or
the advancement of education.
To be eligible for funding from the Diageo Foundation, projects must fall within one of the four key focus
areas: Skills for Life, Water of Life, Local Communities or Disaster Relief. They must also demonstrate the

5. The Centre for Social Justice Awards
If you are a charity, small voluntary group, or other project tackling poverty in your
local area and helping turn lives around, then we want to hear from you. You will
be people focused, tackling causes as well as symptoms, practical,
entrepreneurial, driven by conviction and motivated by compassion. Most
importantly, whether a small organization on a shoe string, or a larger organization
with robust funding streams, you will be helping people out of poverty and/or
reversing social breakdown. Effective poverty fighting groups with or without
charitable status is welcome to apply.
There is no application form. Simply describe in 500 words or less how your
organization makes an exceptional contribution to tackling poverty and turning
lives around. Evidence of anecdotal and numerical results of how lives are being
turned around are particularly welcome. Supporting evidence of up to 15 pages
may be attached to your application. This can include press articles, evaluation
reports or applications for funding. Documents sent to us cannot be returned.
Applications can be posted or emailed to arrive by 5pm on the 17 March 2009.
They would be particularly pleased to receive your applications by email and/or
pdf or word format rather than hard copy where possible. Organisations that have
applied before are welcome to apply up to a maximum of twice.

6. Cash For Kids - Merseyside and North Wales
The Cash for Kids scheme is provided by Radio City / Magic / City Talk and Barclaycard
and administered by Radio City Foundation. Funding is intended to support local
charities to run projects that benefit disadvantaged children who are under the age of
18 years living in Merseyside, the North West and North Wales.To be eligible, applicants
must:
Be a registered children's charity based in Merseyside, the North West and
North Wales.
Have a project that helps children and young people who:
Are aged 18 years or younger.
Are disadvantaged or disabled through one of the following:
Suffering mental, physical or sensory disabilities.
Suffering behavioural or psychological disorders.
Living in poverty or situations of deprivation.
Suffering distress, abuse or neglect.
Live in the Radio City 96.7, City Talk 105.9 or Magic 1548
broadcasting area (Merseyside, North West and North Wales) or
have parents who live in this area. Local non-registered
voluntary and community groups are eligible to apply but they
must seek support from a local registered charity to receive the
grant on their behalf. Priority will be given to applications which:
Directly benefit a large number of children.
Make a positive impact on young people's lives.
Eligible Expenditure - Costs associated with eligible projects.
Applications are due by 31 March or 30 September each year.

7. film-
First Light (young film-makers)
First Light Movies provides funding to organisations to support film-making
among young people aged between five and 19. Productions of any genre are
eligible to receive funding (eg live action, animated fiction, creative
documentaries). Young people are expected to play a lead role in all aspects of
the production process. Organisations such as schools and local authorities are
eligible to participate in the scheme. The next deadline is 31 March 2009.

Volant Charitable Trust
The Volant Charitable Trust is a charitable giving vehicle for the author J K
Rowling. The Foundation is currently seeking applications for projects within the
UK that alleviate social deprivation, especially through work with women and
children. The Trust supports national or local projects. Grants can be for capital
or revenue items and can be for up to three years. Applications are discussed at
meetings in March and September each year. The next closing date is 27
