People don’t want just goods or services from a business anymore - they want a unique, remarkable experience built around those goods or services. It’s the same for your library. Your patrons are looking for more than a book - they can find that at Walmart, or even in their pocket. They want a unique, useful user experience built around “your stuff.” User experiences are a strange brew of structure, community, and customers. Today’s savvy librarians need to focus on the full digital and physical experiences patrons have when they make a library visit - so they can quickly find information, make decisions, or participate - creating positive experiences that visitors not only remember but want to share with others. David Lee King explains the customer experience design concept, introduces a range of tools and strategies, and shares experience design best practices.

Or a few things The Little Prince can teach us about information environments and the humans that inhabit them. Universally considered a children’s book, The Little Prince is everything but. At close read, it becomes apparent how it really is a metaphor for the complex information systems we move through, and the challenges humans face while trying to make sense of environments where context is constantly shifting and where the boundaries between imagination and reality, physical and digital are getting blurrier very quickly. A 5-minute Ignite talk about how the Devops mindset can help to survive in organizational silo's. Short Summary: Often in large companies, everyone with the same profile is pushed into the same department. For example system guys, python guys and helpdesk people. Each with has different team leads and middle management... This is called “The Silo Effect”. This idea probably sounds good on paper but in reality, it is why companies are slow and cost ineffective. For the people inside there is no way to easily bounce ideas off someone with different skills and expertise. The problem with Silo's is that teams can get easily isolated from other teams. This results in a situation where it might become impossible to get help from other teams when problems arise and you are dependent on them. The middle managers are then often dragged into the fray and everyone starts blaming everyone. So in order to fix this, do something technical people often forget to do: stop focusing on solving the technical dilemmas and start communicating. Ask other teams how you can improve your system and realign it with their vision. So my story here is really about how to build bridges between silos. As a developer or ops person, talk about different concerns and visions.Share the responsibility of shipping an application with your systems team. It is about planting seeds that will create cooperation, respect and trust. Seeds that only grow by making compromises. It is about inspiring a change in work ethic, not forcing it. We got there by compromise and lots of strict agreements. Given our technology, we agreed to a deployment process flow and laid down the tracks to follow that path. In our case we created a Jenkins pipeline and since we build as Debian packages, we make it easy for operators to manage. So what do you do when you encounter silos? Don't put energy towards knocking them down. The management structure has been there for ages and will probably never change. Make it your playground, learn to navigate them and uncover shortcuts. Informally discuss with the people in other teams, at the coffee machine for example. In the end, it is about a gradual evolution of improving communication and collaboration, not an immediate revolution. Keep in mind IT is not centered around the systems or the tech we use, it is about the people. Finally... Real silos are often painted in the color of the sky, to make them look transparant. And this is exactly what we should do too with organizational silos. So when life gives you silos, paint them.

The gap between physical and digital has blurred: we use Wiis to get in shape, computers to order a pizza, or our smartphone’s GPS to find hot dates. People want to interact with products and services when they want to and how they want to – and that’s not always on the web. The future of design is everywhere the customer touches our product or service - digital or physical. User experience practitioners must move beyond the screen to designing a holistic customer experience that is seamless across channels and devices.

Many people either don't think they are creative or don't know exactly how they are creative. However, everyone is creative in some way. If you've neglected your creative spark for a while, know that it's not absent, that it merely needs reviving. We'll look at some of the ways your creativity may have been stifled and explore several methods to awakening the slumbering giant of creativity within.

Slides from a presentation at the Riding the Wave Conference in Gimli, MB. 12 May 2011. Seymour Papert describes bricolage as a way to learn and solve problems by trying, testing and playing around. How do we learn by playing around with digital stuff? Can we create deep learning experiences that encourage students to show and share what they know with the world and contribute to the global knowledge commons? A variety of concrete student centred learning experiences are shared that leverage the power of the world wide web and focus teachers instructional design through lenses that are student centred, knowledge centred, assessment centred, and community centred. We look at both small short term assignments and larger long term projects that demonstrate how your students can learn and share as 21st century bricoleurs.

Slides to support a master class at the PRIZMAH Conference in Chicago, IL. 5 Feb 2017. How can we make learning sticky using powerful storytelling frameworks that tap into peoples' emotions? How do we involve all students in creating digital content that doesn't also create hours of content for teachers to assess? This interactive session will showcase Digital Storytelling activities teachers can use in class tomorrow! Document student learning & foster reflective ways for students to share their learning. 1st: we play! Then we'll discuss how to practically adapt these ideas, make them your own, and figure out what sort of infrastructure needs to be in place to support these kinds of powerful learning experiences. We’ll learn how to exercise your students' & your own creativity muscles and share simple strategies for collecting & publishing student work.

Technology has changed the face of libraries and is continuing to change how we work and how we deliver services to customers. This workshop introduces emerging technology trends and shows how those trends are reshaping library services. Examples are provided of how to incorporate these evolving trends into libraries. Attendees learn what trends to look for, find out the difference between a technology trend and a fad, and get ideas on how their library can respond to technology as it emerges.

A modern library is all about making and maintaining connections. Connections to library customers, connections to community partners, and even helping some customers connect to the library and the web for the first time. All are important in today’s library. King shares examples of how libraries can use data to better connect with customers, innovative ways to create new community partnerships, and how some libraries and other organizations are using technology tools to help all customers connect to the library and to the world.

You have made video and dumped it to YouTube. But have you “gone live”? This presentation explores the emerging and easy-to-use live streaming tools available to today’s librarian. We examine Facebook Live, YouTube Live, live streaming on Instagram, and Periscope, which allows you to go live on Twitter. Introductions to each will be given, and suggestions for use in a library setting will be provided. We might even “go live”!

Big or small, urban or rural, every library has three critical aspects that will always affect customers: content, connection, and community. Learn how to harness the power of traditional and emerging content needs, face-to-face connections—whether online or in-person—and community building. Putting these 3Cs to work will help your library achieve the ultimate goal: contented customers.

Instagram is a mobile photo-sharing app that allows users to take and share photos and videos with others. It's also a great way to share your library's story with customers, and is a fun visual tool to drive people to the library and its services and programs. In this webinar, attendees will learn what Instagram is, how to best use it to connect with customers, and how to set a strategy for success.

Customer experience is a strange brew of structure, community, and customers. Today’s savvy librarians need to focus on creating digital and physical experiences for customers so that they can quickly find information, make decisions, or participate. Librarians need to create experiences that visitors not only remember, but share with their friends. David Lee King breaks down the customer experience in a way that will help you remain an indispensable focal point of your community. People don’t want just goods or services from a business anymore – they want unique, engaging experiences built around those goods and services. It’s the same for your library. Our patrons are looking for more than a book – they can find that at Walmart and via their favorite mobile device. They want a unique, engaging experience built around “your stuff.”

You have social media, but what should it look like? What content should you share with your customers? David shares some best practices with posting to business and organization social media channels.

Not getting people to your library’s website? Not sure how to “sell” your library to the younger generation? This presentation provides some easy ways to tweak your online marketing and promotion efforts for maximum impact. King shows how his library uses digital branch tools to reach out to the community and to draw people into the library—both physical and digital.
