15. Africa - An Economic Lion
Africa’s real GDP grew by 4.7% a year on average-twice the pace of its growth
in the 1980’s and 90.
By 2009 Africa’s collective GDP of $1.6 trillion was roughly equal to Brazil’s or
Russia’s.
Africans spent $860 billion on goods and services in 2008 which is 35% more
than the $635 billion that Indians spent and also slightly more than the $821
billion of consumer expenditures in Russia.
If Africa were to maintain its current growth trajectory consumers will buy $1.4
trillion worth of goods and services in 2020
Telecom companies in Africa have added 316 million subscribers since 2000.

The continent has abundance of resources
10 % of world’s oil reserves
40 % of it gold ore
80-90 % of its deposits of chromium and platinum group metals

branded products
Another 27 million households earned 10 000 to 20 000 USD
In addition 41 million households reported incomes of 5000 to 10000 USD,
the level at which families start spending more than half their income on non
food items.

annual incomes of more than 5000 USD- enjoying discretionary spending

19. Aker i Ghana 19
November 2008: Aker awarded a licence to drill for oil off coast of Ghana
Contract partners:
– GNPC (national oil company of Ghana) 10%
– Chemu Power 5%
Chemu Power turned out to be owned by persons close to the president:
– Charles Mensa: Board director of University of Cape Coast Council, which awarded
president honorary PhD degree in law
– Nik Amartafeido: President is godfather to his daughter
– Both persons appointed to high position by president
Government replaced in elections in 2009
Competitor Anadarko complained:
– Carrying Ghanaian partner would violate Foreign Corrupt Practices Act
Aker licence revoked
Did Aker do anything wrong here?
