April is National Heart Worm Awareness Month!
Each year, April is the month where the entire
veterinary industry tries to bring awareness of the
problem of Heart Worms to our clients. Heart worm
in the state of Florida is something that pet owners -
cats and dogs - should be aware of year round. It's
far easier to prevent an infection and keep your furry
family members safe.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of
care!

Prevention
At Chiquita Animal Hospital, we offer a wide variety of prevention products that you can
purchase for your pets to keep them safe and healthy. There are also some newer products that
you may not be aware of including one which is required only once every six months.
We recommend that you have your pet be tested for heart worm annually, and you maintain
protection against this disease. If your pet has been seen within the past year by one of our
veterinarians, then you can call our office at 239-945-2279, and speak to one of our staff
members about purchasing a product to protect your pet. You can also visit us on the web by

Sunday, the website is open 24 x 7! Providing us with advance notice on the request - we ask
for 24 hours - will also allow our staff to ensure that they have your request processed and ready
for pick up when you arrive, keeping any wait time to a minimum.
If we haven't seen your pet within the last year, then we will need to schedule you for an
appointment with one of our veterinarians, where we can also conduct a heart worm test during
that visit. You can call our office to schedule that at 239-945-2279, or you can visit our website
and request an appointment at any time - the site never closes!

Dental Month Discount Extended at Chiquita Animal Hospital!
We're VERY excited to be able to announce that the hospital will be extending our current
promotion for Pet Dental Month through the end of March!
Due to demand for dental cleanings and procedures, we felt we were unable to accommodate
the requests by limiting them to the end of the month of February. As a result, we decided to
expand on the time frame and allow for more access for pets to receive the oral care they need
and for you, the client, to be able to take
advantage of the discount that we've offered.
Our discount is 5% on all dental procedures
but does not include the blood work. In
addition, in order to be able to take
advantage of this promotional offer, your pet
must have been seen by one of our doctors
within the past 365 days for an examination.
This is a Florida state requirement as it constitutes a doctor-client-patient relationship. That
means that we can provide your pet with necessary medical services as well as dispense any
medications your pet may need as well. Any blood work run as pre-operative or part of a
wellness panel that your pet have done is good for 30 days.
One major advantage with our 5% promotion is that instead of a flat rate discount or a finite
amount being discounted, your discount actually increases based on the needs of the pet and

what you and the doctor determine need to be done. Oftentimes, it is difficult to fully examine
a pet's oral health without the benefit of having that pet under anesthetic and performing x-
rays - much like your own dentist. Every pet's mouth is different, based on age, breed, lifestyle,
etc,.... However, once under anesthetic and the doctor has a full diagnostic view of the pet's
mouth and oral health, they can much better ascertain what medical needs the pet has and will
make those recommendations to you. One scenario that we see frequently, is that the pet has
teeth which need to be extracted or may have already been broken off, and any remains should
be extracted to prevent the forming of an abscess, which can be very painful and expensive to
treat.
Our promotion applies the 5% discount to each extraction. If your pet has 9 extractions, with a
5% discount applied to all, it can end up saving you quite a bit of money in the long run. We
felt strongly that based on the fact that the doctors will uncover so much more when the pet is
easier to work with (under anesthetic) and diagnostic views from radiographs are available, that
offering the discount per need, was not only more affordable, but far more appropriate and fair
to clients.
Keep in mind, that older pets will very definitely have a much more progressive state of decay
in terms of their teeth than younger pets. The images below show how the age progression of
your pet's as compared to owners,.... Just think about the state of your teeth if you hadn't been
to the dentist for a cleaning in over twenty years in some cases!

We're proud to announce that our own Dr. Kacoyanis has been voted into the top 6 finalists for
veterinarians by Pet's Best Insurance. This is the third year Pet's
Best has been running the competition which is awarded quarterly
to a veterinarian nominated by clients. Dr. Kacoyanis was
nominated by one of our clients who has been coming to the
practice for years and was kind enough to take the time to write in
to the company on his behalf. The story was chosen from over 100
other entries and we're so glad it was! It was a nice opportunity to
help bring some well deserved recognition to both Dr. Kacoyanis and Chiquita Animal Hospital
as a whole. The staff take pride in nominations such as this as well since they all know that
they've done their part to help Dr. K with his cases.
The story that ran initially is as follows:
“We found "Dr. K" purely by chance in the early stages of his career. He's never "moved on" and
he is now one of the owners. He has shared our joy, our worry and, ultimately, our mourning for
20 years. From puppies who get into silly to serious mischief to animals who have had cancer
and he referred them to animal oncologists to seniors who could no longer find their way, he

The contest was designed to recognize veterinarians across the U.S. who go above and beyond
for their clients.
Pet owners across the country were asked to nominate their veterinarian, via Facebook or the
Pets Best website, and share why they think their veterinarian is the best.
Six finalists were selected, and each quarter the veterinarians’ stories are posted to Pets Best
Insurance’s Facebook page and website for public voting. (www.petsbest.com/vote)
The quarterly winners of the My Vet’s the Best contest are automatically entered into the My
Vet’s the Best grand prize contest.
Last quarter, the winner had over 18,000 votes! We will need some help to get that total, so
we're asking all of you to please vote and help out. If you can, please share out onto your

Please meet Dylan!
We are looking for a forever home for him. He was
brought to us by a good samaritan with a skin
condition which has since cleared up nicely.
We've had Dylan with us for a couple months now
and he's definitely ready to go on to his "forever home" with a new family! He's been
wonderful with the staff and loved by everyone. He's very playful and very much ready to find
a place to call his own!
