So what are these things? It’s a communication tool that gets into the hand of every student in the room. I can pose questions to the whole class, and solicit responses from the whole class. Instead of calling on one student I am calling on all of them. There is no more hiding behind the outspoken student, there is no more fear of being called on, there is no more wondering if they got it.
After teaching a year in Illinois I found a local grant opportunity and was able to get a set of TurningPoint clickers. After using them and showing them off for a year the business department bought a couple sets, and the district pitched in to purchase a few more. Like any piece of technology it is still tricky to get other teachers on board, it’s still hard to get everyone comfortable with the technology to be able to really integrate them into the classroom. I would like to show you some advantages and disadvantages of different types of clickers and how I have been able to integrate them into my math class. There are a few advantages to one system that lend themselves to a math class but these have been successfully implemented in all courses.
These are very small clickers. the receiver is no bigger than a beefed up jump drive, and the clickers are very rugged. They are so small that the often get overlooked and knocked off the desk. They can take a fall from desk height. Many have fallen but none have stopped working.
They store well, they are transportable. When we have an activity that we all want to do on the same day it is possible to do hand-offs in the hall and then quickly run it on another machine.
If you are looking to venture out for the first time into clicker world I would recommend using TurningPoint because of how easily it works with PowerPoint. It’s just an extra tool bar. In the old version it’s astip
Many text books supply TurningPoint questions with the supplementary materials. If you are looking at a textbook adoption anytime soon I would look to see if they come with pre-made response questions. TurningPoint also supplies a database of 30000 questions that cover all core subjects and are aligned to the state standards.
The disadvantages for these small devices is that there can only be one questions at a time. So all students have to be working on the same problem at one time. You can get around this by printing out all the questions ahead of time and allow student to work on them if they need to.With this the only way to respond is through multiple choice. Now we are all driven by multiple choice assessments that make or break our AYP and whether or not we are leaving children behind, so it’s not all bad to focus on those types of questions. There are times in a math class when a numerical response would be more appropriate. TurningPoint does have this option with their response card XR. I have not had the fortune to use them. However…

This is where math lends itself well to the SMART clicker system. I can give a variety of types of questions with the options to have numerical inputs.
