Editor's Notes
• Provide a means by which elearning as a whole can be broken down into smaller manageable chunks
Depending on context, these are often expressed as literacies or fluencies.
A lot of them overlap and feed into each other
• Digital Citizenship
• Social Media etc
• Digital Literacy: Students creating their own original digital content and sharing it with others
• Media Literacy: The practice of turning passive media consumers (the majority of our students & ourselves) into critical thinkers and media creators
• Information Literacy: The skills of being able to identify, locate, evaluate and effectively use information for the issue or problem at hand
• Technological Literacy: As it relates to elearning, it involves the skills required to use various software and hardware
• What might these competencies look like in the classroom?
• Great resources for schools (NZ context)
• A resource I created for my students to become familiar with the nine elements of digital citizenship
• As teachers how are we leveraging social media for our own PD?
• Am I using social media tools within the classroom to support the teaching & learning process?
• What social media tools are my students using? Why are they using them?
• My PLN - 550 or so educators that I can call on for help, ideas etc / VLN etc
• Example: embedding RSS feed into a google site
• #edchatNZ
Digital Literacy: Students creating their own original digital content to share with others.
• It could be as simple as a student creating a keynote to share their learning with others.
Example: Reading about the ANZAC campaign in Gallipoli
Task: Recreate the ANZAC landings using minecraft
• research the events
• recreate the topography
• identify landmarks
• identify important people involved in the battle
• retell the story (first 24 hrs)
Digital literacy skills - creating / editing / sharing
• Media Literacy: The practice of turning passive media consumers into critical thinkers and media
creators
• We are currently looking at persuasive writing through the lens of advertising.
• Our class is critically analysing ads and seeing how advertisers use various techniques to get us to buy
and consume their products. Students will create their own ads using these techniques.
• Information Literacy: The skills of being able to identify, locate, evaluate and effectively use information for the issue or problem at hand.
• Action Learning model we all use, usually as part of the ALJ process
• Informational Literacy
• Teaching research skills through our Action Learning Model
• First port of call for finding info? Students don’t go to the library, or ask an expert ...
• Teaching search skills using Google Ninja
• Technological literacy - software - hardware
• Example: garageband, imovie skills - what skills do my students have?
• Example: Can my students use a camera?
Do my students know how to transfer media files from their phones into their google apps accounts?
• Where are we as a school on this continuum?
• Individuals?
• How are we encouraging collaboration amongst our students? (google docs) What about between teacher & learner?
• Personalised learning: understand how they learn, know & drive their own learning, co-designers of the curriculum & learning environment • • Aspects of our practice our “empowering” eg; personalisation of learning experiences allowing students to choose what “tool” will best suit their particular needs etc, also the use of eportfolios
• Co-constructed - student voice
• Real world - ALJ
