3. - The TOEFL Test allows you to demonstrate that you have
4. the English language skills necessary
5. for effective communication in academic setting.
6. Here's an overview of what to expect on the test.
7. The TOEFL Test has four sections,
8. Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing.
9. All four sections are completed in one testing session,
10. which takes about four hours.
11. The first section is Reading.
12. The Reading section has three or four passages
13. of about 700 words each.
14. For each passage, you will answer
15. 12 to 14 multiple choice questions.
16. You will have 60 to 80 minutes
17. to complete the Reading section.
18. And during that time, you can return to previous questions
19. to review or change your answers.
20. Next, is the Listening section.
21. For this section, you will wear a headset
22. to hear the conversations and lectures.
23. There are two or three conversations.
24. Each is about three minutes long
25. and has five multiple choice questions.
26. There are four or six lectures, each of those
27. about three to five minutes long
28. and has six multiple choice questions.
29. In the Listening section, you will only hear
30. the conversations and lectures one time.
31. Also you must answer the questions in the order
32. that they are presented.
33. In this section, you can't go back to previous questions.
34. You will have 60 to 90 minutes to complete the section.
35. You probably notice that in the Reading
36. and Listening sections, the testing time
37. and number of questions can vary.
38. That is because every test includes some extra questions
39. that are being evaluated by ETS for use in future tests
40. and do not count toward your score.
41. So, your test will either have extra Reading questions
42. or extra Listening questions, but never both.
43. And you won't know which questions are the extra ones
44. so make sure you do your best on all of them.
45. After the Listening section, there is a required
46. 10-minute break.
47. So use the time to have some water or a snack
48. and refresh yourself for the rest of the test.
2. 49. After the break is the Speaking section.
50. The Speaking section has six tasks
51. and takes about 20 minutes to complete.
52. Some tasks require you to listen to part of a conversation
53. or lecture, so you will continue to use your headset.
54. Some also require you to read a short passage.
55. For each task, you will be asked a question
56. and will be given a short time to prepare your response.
57. Then, you will speak into the microphone
58. on your headset for 45 to 60 seconds,
59. depending on the question.
60. Last, is the Writing section, in which you will
61. complete two writing tasks in 50 minutes
62. by typing your responses into the computer.
63. In the first task, you will read a passage
64. and listen to a short lecture, then write your response.
65. You will have 20 minutes to write your response.
66. In the second task, you will be asked your opinion
67. on an issue and you will have 30 minutes to write
68. your response.
69. And that's it.
70. After you finish the test, you should go do something fun.
71. You've earned it.
72. You did your best on an important test
73. and that's a great accomplishment.
