1. Production Facilities
During the production of an advertisement for radio, extensive equipment and facilities are used to
ensure that it meets the professional criteria and quality to be aired. The radio station will have
internal facilities in which they can produce their own adverts. Alternatively, they could have it
created and produced through an independent production house.
To ensure that the advert is of a professional standard and of a sufficient quality to air too many
people, industry level equipment will always be used. All production facilities will feature a recording
studio. A professional, first class recording studio is where the adverts will be created and produced,
with the help of lots of equipment:
Microphones: Top quality microphones will be able to clearly
and effectively pick up voices without interference.
Soundproof Audio Booth- This cancels out surrounding noise
and ensures that the only sound being recorded is the one
that is needed. As everything else is blocked out, the sound
being recorded will be crystal clear.
Digital audio multi-track editor: This is software which can
assist in the editing process of recorded content.
A sound resources library. This will be a registered legal
library of music, sound effects and other created content which can be put into an advert. At
college we have a sound resources library, which features the above items. They can be
accessed via the college’s computer network which is available to all students. I t is primarily
used to assist in the broadcast of our college radio station, E6 Radio. Music in libraries such
as this will have been purchased for use and therefore will not bring about any possible
copyright infringement.
2. Audacity is free to download audio editing software.
As it is free to download, it is not the most
sophisticated piece of software and will not be used
by some of the bigger radio stations, with it most
likely being used by smaller radio station such as
hospital, student and internet radios, as their
budgets will most likely be limited.
Reaper is a more advanced form of editing software.
It is a purchasable piece of software and provides
greater abilities to the user, giving them more
control over the sound properties, including levels,
transitions and speed.
An editing workstation will feature all of the things required to create an advert, post production.
This will include an up-to-date computer capable of running sophisticated software which will enable
the user to professionally edit their content. For smaller workstations in smaller radio stations, the
workstation may also feature the recording equipment, rather than having them in separate areas.
