Definition of Psychology Thinking critically: What is psychology and what kinds of topics do psychologists study? Pg. 6 psychology- is the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. 3 parts to definition: Scientific study Behavior Mental processes
Scientific Study Rely on scientific research methods in their attempt to unravel answers to questions such as “why do some people offer help when others don’t?” Use of data and mathematical formula i.e. Average, common numbers, relationship
Behavior and mental Processes Look at these areas as a means of studying topics that psychologists study. Observable behavior: sitting, standing, voice tone, attitude, affect. Refer to client notes Mental Processes: thoughts feelings and dreams Study different factors- location and behavior in location.(children at day care) more aggressive than at home.
