Famed visionary of Lourdes, baptized Mary Bernard. She
was born in Lourdes, France, on January 7, 1844, the
daughter of Francis and Louise Soubirous. Bernadette, a
severe asthma sufferer, lived in abject poverty. On
February 11, 1858, she was granted a vision of the Blessed
Virgin Mary in a cave on the banks of the Gave River near
Lourdes. She was placed in considerable jeopardy when
she reported the vision, and crowds gathered when she had
futher visits from the Virgin. The civil authorities tried to
frighten Bernadette into recanting her accounts, but she
remained faithful to the vision. A spring emerged from the
cave and the waters were discovered to be of a miraculous
nature, capable of healing the sick and lame. Bernadette
announced that the vision stated that she was the
Immaculate Conception, and that a church should be
erected on the site. Many authorities tried to shut down
the spring and delay the construction of the chapel, but the
influence and fame of the visions reached Empress
Eugenie of France, wife of Napoleon Ill, and construction
went forward. Crowds gathered, free of harassment from
the anticlerical and antireligious officials. In 1866,
Bernadette was sent to the Sisters of Notre Dame in
Nevers. There she became a member of the community,
and faced some rather harsh treatment from the mistress
of novices. This oppression ended when it was discovered
that she suffered from a painful, incurable illness. She
died in Nevers on April 16,1879, still giving the same
account of her visions. Lourdes became one of the major
pilgrimage destinations in the world, and the spring has

Catherine started having mystical experiences when she

of Christ, Mary, and the saints. St. Catherine was one of
the most brilliant theological minds of her day, although
she never had any formal education. She persuaded the
Pope to go back to Rome from Avignon, in 1377, and
when she died she was endeavoring to heal the Great
Western Schism. In 1375 Our Lord give her the

Catherine's letters, and a treatise called "a dialogue" are
considered among the most brilliant writings in the
history of the Catholic Church. She died when she was
only 33, and her body was found incorrupt in 1430.

St Brigid of IrelandSt Brigid of IrelandFeast Day: February 1
Ppatron of Ireland
Brigid was probably born at Faughart near Dundalk, Louth, Ireland.
Her parents were baptized by St. Patrick, with whom she developed a
close friendship. According to legend, her father was Dubhthach, an
Irish chieftain of Lienster, and her mother, Brocca, was a slave at his
court. Even as a young girl she evinced an interest for a religious life
and took the veil in her youth from St. Macaille at Croghan and
probably was professed by St Mel of Armagh, who is believed to have
conferred abbatial authority on her. She settled with seven of her
virgins at the foot of Croghan Hill for a time and about the year 468,
followed Mel to Meath. About the year 470 she founded a double
monastery at Cill-Dara (Kildare) and was Abbess of the convent, the
first in Ireland. The foundation developed into a center of learning
and spirituality, and around it grew up the Cathedral city of Kildare.
She founded a school of art at Kildare and itsilhuminated manuscripts
became famous, notably the Book of Kildare, which was praised as
one of the finest of all illuminated Irish manuscripts before its
disappearance three centuries ago. Brigid was one of the most
remarkable women of her times, and despite the numerous legendary,
extravagant, and even fantastic miracles attributed to her, there is no
doubt that her extraordinary spirituality, boundless charity, and
compassion for those in distress were real. She died at Kildare on

St. FaustinaSt. FaustinaFeast Day: October 5
Saint Faustina (1905 - 1938) was born Helena Kowalska in a small village
west of Lodz, Poland on August 25, 1905. She was the third of ten
children. When she was almost twenty, she entered the Congregation of
the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy, whose members devote themselves to
the care and education of troubled young women. The following year she
received her religious habit and was given the name Sister Maria Faustina,
to which she added, "of the Most Blessed Sacrament", as was permitted by
her congregation's custom. In the 1930's, Sister Faustina received from the
Lord a message of mercy that she was told to spread throughout the world.
She was asked to become theapostle and secretary of God's mercy, a
model of how to be merciful to others, and an instrument for
reemphasizing God's plan of mercy for the world. It was not a glamorous
prospect. Her entire life, in imitation of Christ's, was to be a sacrafice - a
life lived for others. At the Divine Lord's request, she willingly offered her
personal sufferings in union with Him to atone for the sins of others; in her
daily life she was to become a doer of mercy, bringing joy and peace to
others, and by writing about God's mercy, she was to encourage others to
trust in Him and thus prepare the world for His coming again. Her special
devotion toMary Immaculate and to thesacraments of Eucharist and
Reconcilition gave her the strength to bear all her sufferings as an offering
to God on behalf of the Church and those in special need, especially great
sinners and the dying. After her death from tuberculosis in 1938, even her
closest associates were amazed as they began to discover what great
sufferings and deep mystical experiences had been given to this Sister of
theirs, who had always been so cheerful and humble. She had taken deeply
into her heart, God's gospel command to "be merciful even as your
heavenly Father is merciful" as well as her confessor's directive that she
should act in such a way that everyone who came in contact with her would
go away joyful. The message of mercy that Sister Faustina received is now
being spread throughout the world; her diary, Divine Mercy in my Soul,
has become the handbook for devotion to the Divine Mercy.

Patroness of Bellmakers, Protector against the outbreak
of fire.
Although we have evidence that Agatha was venerated at least as far
back as the sixth century, the only facts we have about her are that she
was born in Sicily and died there a martyr. In the legend of her life,
she belonged to a rich, important family. When she was young, she
dedicated her life to God and resisted any men who wanted to marry
her or have sex with her. One of these men, Quintian, was of a high
enough rank that he felt he could force her to acquiesce. Knowing she
was a Christian in a time of persecution, he had her arrested and
brought before the judge - - himself. He expected her to give in to
when faced with torture and possible death, but she simply affirmed
her belief in God by praying: "Jesus Christ, Lord of all, you see my
heart, you know my desires. Possess all that I am. I am your sheep:
make me worthy to overcome the devil." Legend tells us that Quintian
imprisoned her in a brothel in order to get her to change her mind.
Quintian brought her back before him after she had suffered a month
of assault and humiliation in the brothel, but Agatha had never
wavered, proclaiming that her freedom came from Jesus. Quintian
sent her to prison, instead of back to the brothel -- a move intended to
make her more afraid, but which probably was a great relief to her.
When she continued to profess her faith in Jesus, Quintian had her
tortured. He refused her any medical care but God gave her all the
care she needed in the form of a vision of St. Peter. When she was
tortured again, she died after saying a final prayer: "Lord, my Creator,
you have always protected me from the cradle; you have taken me
from the love of the world and given me patience to suffer. Receive
my soul." Because one of the tortures she supposedly suffered was to
have her breasts cut off, she was often depicted carrying her breasts on
a plate. It is thought that blessing of the bread that takes place on her

Augustiniannun, also called Margarita. She was born in
Roccaporena, near Spoleto, Italy, in 1381, and expressed
from an early age the desire to become a nun. Her elderly
parents insisted that she be married at the age of twelve to a
man described in accounts of her life as cruel and harsh. She
spent eighteen extremely unhappy years, had two sons, and
was finally widowed when her husband was killed in a brawl.
Both sons also died, and Rita, still anxious to become a nun,
tried unsuccessfully to enter the Augustinians in their convent
at Cascia. She was refused because she was a widow and
because of the requirement that all sisters should be virgins.
Finally, in 1413, the order gave her entry, and she earned
fame for her austerity, devotion to prayer, and charity. In the
midst of chronic illnesses, she received visions and wounds on
her forehead which resembled the crown of thorns. She died
on May 22 at Cascia, and many miracles were reported
instantly. Canonized in 1900, she is honored in Spain as La
Santa de los Impossibles.

St. Maria GorettiSt. Maria Goretti
Feast Day: July 6
Patron of youth, young women, purity, and victims of rape
1890 - 1902
Born in Corinaldo, Ancona, Italy, on October 16 1890; her
farmworker father moved his family to Ferrier di Conca, near Anzio.
Her father died of malaria and her mother had to struggle to feed her
children.
In 1902 an eighteen-year-old neighbor, Alexander, grabbed her from
her steps and tried to rape her. When Maria said that she would
rather died than submit, Alexander began stabbing her with a knife.
As she lay in the hospital, she forgave Alexander before she died. Her
death didn't end her forgivness, however. Alexander was captured and
sentenced to thirty years. He was unrepentant until he had a dream
that he was in a garden. Maria was there and gave him flowers. When
he woke, he was a changed man, repenting of his crime and living a
reformed life. When he was released after 27 years he went directly to
Maria's mother to beg her forgiveness, which she gave. "If my daughter
can forgive him, who am I to withold forgiveness," she said.
When Maria was declared a saint in 1950, Alexander was there in the
St. Peter's crowd to celebrate her canonization. She was canonized by
Pope Pius XII in 1950 for her purity as model for youth. She is called
a martyr because she fought against Alexander's attempts at sexual
assault. However, the most important aspect of her story is her
forgiveness of her attacker -- her concern for her enemy extending
even beyond death.

Blessed Kateri TekakwithaBlessed Kateri TekakwithaFeast Day: July 14
Patron of the environment and ecology
1656 - April 17, 1680
Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, Virgin, has not yet been canonized. Kateri
was born near the town of Auriesville, New York, in the year 1656, the
daughter of a Mohawk warrior. She was four years old when her
mother died of smallpox. The disease also attacked Kateri and
transfigured her face. She was adopted by her two aunts and an uncle.
Kateri became converted as a teenager. She was baptized at the age of
twenty and incurred the great hostility of her tribe. Although she had
to suffer greatly for her Faith, she remained firm in it. Kateri went to
the new Christian colony of Indians in Canada. Here she lived a life
dedicated to prayer, penitential practices, and care for the sick and
aged. Every morning, even in bitterest winter, she stood before the
chapel door until it opened at four and remained there until after the
last Mass. She was devoted to the Eucharist and to Jesus Crucified.
She died on April 17, 1680 at the age of twenty-four. She is known as
the "Lily of the Mohawks". Devotion to Kateri is responsible for
establishing Native American ministries in Catholic Churches all over
the United States and Canada. Kateri was declared venerable by the
Catholic Church in 1943 and she was Beatified in 1980. Work is
currently underway to have her Canonized by the Church. Hundreds
of thousands have visited shrines to Kateri erected at both St Francis
Xavier and Caughnawaga and at her birth place at Auriesville, New
York.Pilgrimages at these sites continue today.
Blessed Kateri Teckakwitha is the first Native American to be
declared a Blessed.

St Joan of ArcSt Joan of ArcFeast Day: May 30
Patron of soldiers and France
St. Joan of Arc (1412 - 1431) is the patroness of soldiers and of France. On
January 6, 1412, Joan of Arc was born to pious parents of the French
peasant class, at the obscure village of Domremy, near the province of
Lorraine. At a very early age, she heard voices: those of St. Michael, St.
Catherine and St. Margaret. At first the messages were personal and
general. Then at last came the crowning order. In May, 1428, her voices "of
St. Michael, St. Catherine, and St. Margaret" told Joan to go to the King of
France and help him reconquer his kingdom. For at that time the English
king was after the throne of France, and the Duke of Burgundy, the chief
rival of the French king, was siding with him and gobbling up evermore
French territory.
After overcoming opposition from churchmen and courtiers, the seventeen
year old girl was given a small army with which she raised the seige of
Orleans on May 8, 1429. She then enjoyed a series of spectacular military
successes, during which the King was able to enter Rheims and be crowned
with her at his side.
In May 1430, as she was attempting to relieve Compiegne, she was
captured by the Burgundians and sold to the English when Charles and the
French did nothing to save her. After months of imprisonment, she was
tried at Rouen by a tribunal presided over by the infamous Peter Cauchon,
Bishop of Beauvais, who hoped that the English would help him to
become archbishop.
Through her unfamiliarity with the technicalities of theology, Joan was
trapped into making a few damaging statements. When she refused to
retract the assertion that it was the saints of God who had commanded her
to do what she had done, she was condemned to death as a heretic,
sorceress, and adulteress, and burned at the stake on May 30, 1431. She
was nineteen years old. Some thirty years later, she was exonerated of all
guilt and she was ultimately canonized in 1920 by Pope Benedict XV,

St. Mary MagdeleneSt. Mary Magdelene
Feast Day: July 22
She is called "the Penitent". St. Mary was given the name 'Magdalen’
because, though a Jewish girl, she lived in a Gentile town called
Magdale, in northern Galilee, and her culture and manners were those
of a Gentile. St.Luke records that she was a notorious sinner, and had
seven devils removed from her. She was present at Our Lords'
Crucifixion, and with Joanna and Mary, the mother of James and
Salome, at Jesus' empty tomb. " After Jesus' body had been placed in
the tomb, Mary went to anoint it with spices early Easter Sunday
morning. Not finding the Sacred Body, she began to weep, and seeing
someone whom she thought was the gardener, she asked him if he
knew where the Body of her beloved Master had been taken. But then
the person spoke in a voice she knew so well: "Mary!" It was Jesus,
risen from the dead! He had chosen to show Himself first to Mary
Magdalen, the repentent sinner.
Fourteen years after Our Lord's death, St Mary was put in a boat by
theJews without sails or oars - along with Sts.Lazarus and Martha, St.
Maximin (who baptized her), St. Sidonius ("the man born blind"), her
maid Sera, and the body of St. Anne, the mother of the Blessed
Virgin. They were sent drifting out to sea and landed on the shores of
Southern France, where she spent the rest of her life as a
contemplative in a cave known as Sainte-Baume. She was given the
Holy Eucharist daily by angels as her only food, and died when she
was 72. St Mary was transported miraculously, just before she died,
to the chapel of St. Maximin, where she received the last sacraments.

St. Marguerite BourgeoysSt. Marguerite Bourgeoys
Feast Day: January 12 (Canada)
Marguerite had survived many threats in the twenty-six years she had
been in wilderness of Canada. She had lived through Iroquois attacks,
a fire that destroyed her small village, plagues on the ships that she
took back and forth to France, but nothing threatened her dreams
and hopes more than what her own Bishop said to her in 1679. He
told her that she had to join her Congregation of Notre Dame with its
teaching sisters to a cloistered religious order of Ursulines. She
reminded him that the Ursulines because they were cloistered could
not go out and teach, as her Sisters had done.. But Marguerite had
overcome many challenges to get to this day and was not deterred. In
her own native France, she had belonged to a sodality of women who
cared for the sick. The stories of hardships and dangers in Montreal
that made other people shiver, had awakened a call from God in her
to serve the Native Americans and settlers who endured this adversity.
She met with the governor of what was then called Ville Marie and
convinced him she was the person he was looking for to help start a
school for the children of Montreal.. She helped the remarkable
Jeanne Mance, who ran the hospital. When she finally had healthy
children to teach, she had to set to up school in a stable. The poor
and uneducated would not and could not travel to a Quebec cloister
over miles of frontier at the risk of their lives. But her Sisters were
more than willing to live in huts in order to fulfill their call from God.
She had set up schools all over the territory, not just for children.
When the king, in well-meaning ignorance, had sent untrained
orphans over to be colonists she had set up a school for the women to
teach them how to survive and thrive in Canada. Marguerite lived to
see the triumph when their Rule was made official in 1698. She was
canonized in 1982 by Pope John Paul II.

She was born in Lourdes, France, on January 7, 1844, the daughter of Francis and Louise Soubirous. Bernadette, a severe asthma sufferer, lived in abject poverty. On February 11, 1858, she was granted a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary in a cave on the banks of the Gave River near Lourdes. She was placed in considerable jeopardy when she reported the vision, and crowds gathered when she had futher visits from the Virgin. The civil authorities tried to frighten Bernadette into recanting her accounts, but she remained faithful to the vision. A spring emerged from the cave and the waters were discovered to be of a miraculous nature, capable of healing the sick and lame. Bernadette announced that the vision stated that she was the Immaculate Conception, and that a church should be erected on the site. Many authorities tried to shut down the spring and delay the construction of the chapel, but the influence and fame of the visions reached Empress Eugenie of France, wife of Napoleon Ill, and construction went forward. Crowds gathered, free of harassment from the anticlerical and antireligious officials. In 1866, Bernadette was sent to the Sisters of Notre Dame in Nevers. There she became a member of the community, and faced some rather harsh treatment from the mistress of novices. This oppression ended when it was discovered that she suffered from a painful, incurable illness. She died in Nevers on April 16,1879, still giving the same account of her visions. Lourdes became one of the major pilgrimage destinations in the world, and the spring has

Her parents were baptized by St. Patrick, with whom she developed a close friendship. According to legend, her father was Dubhthach, an Irish chieftain of Lienster, and her mother, Brocca, was a slave at his court. Even as a young girl she evinced an interest for a religious life and took the veil in her youth from St. Macaille at Croghan and probably was professed by St Mel of Armagh, who is believed to have conferred abbatial authority on her. She settled with seven of her virgins at the foot of Croghan Hill for a time and about the year 468, followed Mel to Meath. About the year 470 she founded a double monastery at Cill-Dara (Kildare) and was Abbess of the convent, the first in Ireland. The foundation developed into a center of learning and spirituality, and around it grew up the Cathedral city of Kildare. She founded a school of art at Kildare and itsilhuminated manuscripts became famous, notably the Book of Kildare, which was praised as one of the finest of all illuminated Irish manuscripts before its disappearance three centuries ago. Brigid was one of the most remarkable women of her times, and despite the numerous legendary, extravagant, and even fantastic miracles attributed to her, there is no doubt that her extraordinary spirituality, boundless charity, and compassion for those in distress were real. She died at Kildare on February 1. The Mary of the Gael, she is buried at Downpatrick with St. Columba and St. Patrick, with whom she is the. Her name is sometimes Bridget and Bride.

  • 37. St. FaustinaSt. FaustinaFeast Day: October 5 Saint Faustina (1905 - 1938) was born Helena Kowalska in a small village west of Lodz, Poland on August 25, 1905. She was the third of ten children. When she was almost twenty, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy, whose members devote themselves to the care and education of troubled young women. The following year she received her religious habit and was given the name Sister Maria Faustina, to which she added, "of the Most Blessed Sacrament", as was permitted by her congregation's custom. In the 1930's, Sister Faustina received from the Lord a message of mercy that she was told to spread throughout the world. She was asked to become theapostle and secretary of God's mercy, a model of how to be merciful to others, and an instrument for reemphasizing God's plan of mercy for the world. It was not a glamorous prospect. Her entire life, in imitation of Christ's, was to be a sacrafice - a life lived for others. At the Divine Lord's request, she willingly offered her personal sufferings in union with Him to atone for the sins of others; in her daily life she was to become a doer of mercy, bringing joy and peace to others, and by writing about God's mercy, she was to encourage others to trust in Him and thus prepare the world for His coming again. Her special devotion toMary Immaculate and to thesacraments of Eucharist and Reconcilition gave her the strength to bear all her sufferings as an offering to God on behalf of the Church and those in special need, especially great sinners and the dying. After her death from tuberculosis in 1938, even her closest associates were amazed as they began to discover what great sufferings and deep mystical experiences had been given to this Sister of theirs, who had always been so cheerful and humble. She had taken deeply into her heart, God's gospel command to "be merciful even as your heavenly Father is merciful" as well as her confessor's directive that she should act in such a way that everyone who came in contact with her would go away joyful. The message of mercy that Sister Faustina received is now being spread throughout the world; her diary, Divine Mercy in my Soul, has become the handbook for devotion to the Divine Mercy.

  • 39. St. AgathaSt. AgathaFeast Day: February 5 Patroness of Bellmakers, Protector against the outbreak of fire. Although we have evidence that Agatha was venerated at least as far back as the sixth century, the only facts we have about her are that she was born in Sicily and died there a martyr. In the legend of her life, she belonged to a rich, important family. When she was young, she dedicated her life to God and resisted any men who wanted to marry her or have sex with her. One of these men, Quintian, was of a high enough rank that he felt he could force her to acquiesce. Knowing she was a Christian in a time of persecution, he had her arrested and brought before the judge - - himself. He expected her to give in to when faced with torture and possible death, but she simply affirmed her belief in God by praying: "Jesus Christ, Lord of all, you see my heart, you know my desires. Possess all that I am. I am your sheep: make me worthy to overcome the devil." Legend tells us that Quintian imprisoned her in a brothel in order to get her to change her mind. Quintian brought her back before him after she had suffered a month of assault and humiliation in the brothel, but Agatha had never wavered, proclaiming that her freedom came from Jesus. Quintian sent her to prison, instead of back to the brothel -- a move intended to make her more afraid, but which probably was a great relief to her. When she continued to profess her faith in Jesus, Quintian had her tortured. He refused her any medical care but God gave her all the care she needed in the form of a vision of St. Peter. When she was tortured again, she died after saying a final prayer: "Lord, my Creator, you have always protected me from the cradle; you have taken me from the love of the world and given me patience to suffer. Receive my soul." Because one of the tortures she supposedly suffered was to have her breasts cut off, she was often depicted carrying her breasts on a plate. It is thought that blessing of the bread that takes place on her

  • 42. St Rita of CasciaSt Rita of Cascia Feast Day: May 22 Patron saint of hopeless causes 1457 Augustiniannun, also called Margarita. She was born in Roccaporena, near Spoleto, Italy, in 1381, and expressed from an early age the desire to become a nun. Her elderly parents insisted that she be married at the age of twelve to a man described in accounts of her life as cruel and harsh. She spent eighteen extremely unhappy years, had two sons, and was finally widowed when her husband was killed in a brawl. Both sons also died, and Rita, still anxious to become a nun, tried unsuccessfully to enter the Augustinians in their convent at Cascia. She was refused because she was a widow and because of the requirement that all sisters should be virgins. Finally, in 1413, the order gave her entry, and she earned fame for her austerity, devotion to prayer, and charity. In the midst of chronic illnesses, she received visions and wounds on her forehead which resembled the crown of thorns. She died on May 22 at Cascia, and many miracles were reported instantly. Canonized in 1900, she is honored in Spain as La Santa de los Impossibles.

St. Maria GorettiSt. Maria Goretti Feast Day: July 6 Patron of youth, young women, purity, and victims of rape 1890 - 1902 Born in Corinaldo, Ancona, Italy, on October 16 1890; her farmworker father moved his family to Ferrier di Conca, near Anzio. Her father died of malaria and her mother had to struggle to feed her children. In 1902 an eighteen-year-old neighbor, Alexander, grabbed her from her steps and tried to rape her. When Maria said that she would rather died than submit, Alexander began stabbing her with a knife. As she lay in the hospital, she forgave Alexander before she died. Her death didn't end her forgivness, however. Alexander was captured and sentenced to thirty years. He was unrepentant until he had a dream that he was in a garden. Maria was there and gave him flowers. When he woke, he was a changed man, repenting of his crime and living a reformed life. When he was released after 27 years he went directly to Maria's mother to beg her forgiveness, which she gave. "If my daughter can forgive him, who am I to withold forgiveness," she said. When Maria was declared a saint in 1950, Alexander was there in the St. Peter's crowd to celebrate her canonization. She was canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1950 for her purity as model for youth. She is called a martyr because she fought against Alexander's attempts at sexual assault. However, the most important aspect of her story is her forgiveness of her attacker -- her concern for her enemy extending even beyond death.

Kateri was born near the town of Auriesville, New York, in the year 1656, the daughter of a Mohawk warrior. She was four years old when her mother died of smallpox. The disease also attacked Kateri and transfigured her face. She was adopted by her two aunts and an uncle. Kateri became converted as a teenager. She was baptized at the age of twenty and incurred the great hostility of her tribe. Although she had to suffer greatly for her Faith, she remained firm in it. Kateri went to the new Christian colony of Indians in Canada. Here she lived a life dedicated to prayer, penitential practices, and care for the sick and aged. Every morning, even in bitterest winter, she stood before the chapel door until it opened at four and remained there until after the last Mass. She was devoted to the Eucharist and to Jesus Crucified. She died on April 17, 1680 at the age of twenty-four. She is known as the "Lily of the Mohawks". Devotion to Kateri is responsible for establishing Native American ministries in Catholic Churches all over the United States and Canada. Kateri was declared venerable by the Catholic Church in 1943 and she was Beatified in 1980. Work is currently underway to have her Canonized by the Church. Hundreds of thousands have visited shrines to Kateri erected at both St Francis Xavier and Caughnawaga and at her birth place at Auriesville, New York.Pilgrimages at these sites continue today. Blessed Kateri Teckakwitha is the first Native American to be declared a Blessed.

  • 50. St Joan of ArcSt Joan of ArcFeast Day: May 30 Patron of soldiers and France St. Joan of Arc (1412 - 1431) is the patroness of soldiers and of France. On January 6, 1412, Joan of Arc was born to pious parents of the French peasant class, at the obscure village of Domremy, near the province of Lorraine. At a very early age, she heard voices: those of St. Michael, St. Catherine and St. Margaret. At first the messages were personal and general. Then at last came the crowning order. In May, 1428, her voices "of St. Michael, St. Catherine, and St. Margaret" told Joan to go to the King of France and help him reconquer his kingdom. For at that time the English king was after the throne of France, and the Duke of Burgundy, the chief rival of the French king, was siding with him and gobbling up evermore French territory. After overcoming opposition from churchmen and courtiers, the seventeen year old girl was given a small army with which she raised the seige of Orleans on May 8, 1429. She then enjoyed a series of spectacular military successes, during which the King was able to enter Rheims and be crowned with her at his side. In May 1430, as she was attempting to relieve Compiegne, she was captured by the Burgundians and sold to the English when Charles and the French did nothing to save her. After months of imprisonment, she was tried at Rouen by a tribunal presided over by the infamous Peter Cauchon, Bishop of Beauvais, who hoped that the English would help him to become archbishop. Through her unfamiliarity with the technicalities of theology, Joan was trapped into making a few damaging statements. When she refused to retract the assertion that it was the saints of God who had commanded her to do what she had done, she was condemned to death as a heretic, sorceress, and adulteress, and burned at the stake on May 30, 1431. She was nineteen years old. Some thirty years later, she was exonerated of all guilt and she was ultimately canonized in 1920 by Pope Benedict XV,

  • 52. St. Mary MagdeleneSt. Mary Magdelene Feast Day: July 22 She is called "the Penitent". St. Mary was given the name 'Magdalen’ because, though a Jewish girl, she lived in a Gentile town called Magdale, in northern Galilee, and her culture and manners were those of a Gentile. St.Luke records that she was a notorious sinner, and had seven devils removed from her. She was present at Our Lords' Crucifixion, and with Joanna and Mary, the mother of James and Salome, at Jesus' empty tomb. " After Jesus' body had been placed in the tomb, Mary went to anoint it with spices early Easter Sunday morning. Not finding the Sacred Body, she began to weep, and seeing someone whom she thought was the gardener, she asked him if he knew where the Body of her beloved Master had been taken. But then the person spoke in a voice she knew so well: "Mary!" It was Jesus, risen from the dead! He had chosen to show Himself first to Mary Magdalen, the repentent sinner. Fourteen years after Our Lord's death, St Mary was put in a boat by theJews without sails or oars - along with Sts.Lazarus and Martha, St. Maximin (who baptized her), St. Sidonius ("the man born blind"), her maid Sera, and the body of St. Anne, the mother of the Blessed Virgin. They were sent drifting out to sea and landed on the shores of Southern France, where she spent the rest of her life as a contemplative in a cave known as Sainte-Baume. She was given the Holy Eucharist daily by angels as her only food, and died when she was 72. St Mary was transported miraculously, just before she died, to the chapel of St. Maximin, where she received the last sacraments.

  • 54. St. Marguerite BourgeoysSt. Marguerite Bourgeoys Feast Day: January 12 (Canada) Marguerite had survived many threats in the twenty-six years she had been in wilderness of Canada. She had lived through Iroquois attacks, a fire that destroyed her small village, plagues on the ships that she took back and forth to France, but nothing threatened her dreams and hopes more than what her own Bishop said to her in 1679. He told her that she had to join her Congregation of Notre Dame with its teaching sisters to a cloistered religious order of Ursulines. She reminded him that the Ursulines because they were cloistered could not go out and teach, as her Sisters had done.. But Marguerite had overcome many challenges to get to this day and was not deterred. In her own native France, she had belonged to a sodality of women who cared for the sick. The stories of hardships and dangers in Montreal that made other people shiver, had awakened a call from God in her to serve the Native Americans and settlers who endured this adversity. She met with the governor of what was then called Ville Marie and convinced him she was the person he was looking for to help start a school for the children of Montreal.. She helped the remarkable Jeanne Mance, who ran the hospital. When she finally had healthy children to teach, she had to set to up school in a stable. The poor and uneducated would not and could not travel to a Quebec cloister over miles of frontier at the risk of their lives. But her Sisters were more than willing to live in huts in order to fulfill their call from God. She had set up schools all over the territory, not just for children. When the king, in well-meaning ignorance, had sent untrained orphans over to be colonists she had set up a school for the women to teach them how to survive and thrive in Canada. Marguerite lived to see the triumph when their Rule was made official in 1698. She was canonized in 1982 by Pope John Paul II.
