2. I am sure you have heard the phrase " You are What You Eat."
Well the question of this article is can your diet influence your
risk of cancer. For example can an unhealthy diet increase your
risk of cancer and can a healthy diet reduce your risk of cancer.
Since diet is one of the things that we can control in potentially
reducing our risk of cancer, it is important to understand if
research shows that it does indeed show some promise of
reducing your cancer risk.
Research has shown that a diet that is based on animal fats can
increase the risk of cancer and cause other harmful effects on
the body. Other research has shown that eating a diet based on
animal fat can increase a man's risk of prostate cancer
significantly. Other research indicates that being overweight
can increase the risk of uterus cancer in women during
menopause. There is also strong support that a diet high in fat
and low in fiber can increase the risk of colorectal cancer and
other related types of cancers.
So based on the research presented so far it can be safely
assumed that an unhealthy diet does have some affect on your
risk levels for some types of cancers. Now the next question is
can eating a healthy diet reduce your risk of cancer and help
you potentially prevent it. First you have to understand that
there is no direct link between food and cancer. Take the above
example for eating high fat diet and prostate cancer. Just
3. because you eat a diet high in animal fat does not mean you
will get prostate cancer and vice versa. Just because you eat a
diet low in animal fat does not guarantee that you will not get
prostate cancer. What you do however is reduce your risk of
getting cancer by eating healthier foods or even foods that
have compounds in them than are claimed to prevent cancer.
However, there is usually no full proof evidence that this is
possible. For instance, there is no evidence that resveratrol,
contained in grapes, can slow the tumor growth in humans like
it slows the tumor growth in mice. In addition, the consumption
of some fiber-rich foods, for instance, does not guarantee that
you will never get cancer.
Something else you might want to note is that some foods
seem to have anti-cancer properties because some studies
indicate that by eating them your risk is reduced. However the
research does not really indicate why so the reason is not
known.
4. So what is the verdict? Probably the best answer is that a
healthy diet can reduce your risk of cancer. Even if it does not,
it will have other benefits on your life and health as well. For
example a healthy diet will also help to keep your heart
stronger, your blood pressure lower and so on and so on. You
may want to discuss with your doctor switching your diet over
to one that is primarily plant based. Just remember that best
way to prevent cancer is by catching it in its early stages so you
should follow all of your doctors recommended cancer
screening advice. Most importantly make sure that you are
regularly checked for cancer.
