The world bank defines poverty as
“pronounced deprivation in well-being, and
comprises many dimensions. It includes low
incomes and the inability to acquire the basic
goods and services necessary for survival
with dignity.

3. 1. Conditional Cash Transfer programs (CCT) aim to reduce
poverty by making welfare programs conditional upon the
receivers’ actions. The government only transfers the money
to persons who meet certain criteria.
2. Voluntary Welfare Organization (VWO) like Center for Global
Development (CGD), Child Poverty Action Group, End Poverty
Now (EPN) are doing their part to eradicate global poverty and
bring awareness to the public on such issues.
3. Individual crusader like Muhammad Yunus’ Grameen Bank are
offering microfinance organization and community
development bank to help the poor in Bangladesh.

4. ∗Muhammad Yunus was the third child of 14 children of whom five died in
infancy.
∗In 1974, while a professor in a Bangladesh university, he brought along his
students to a field trip to a poor village. They help a few basket-weavers by
loaning them certain amount of money to buy raw material for their basket-
weaving work. He realized that borrowing money from middleman was not as
profitable as forking out his own money as they charged higher rates. Had they
been charge lesser, the profit margin to be more advantages to them.
∗From there, he decided to take things into his own hand by giving out micro-
loans and formed the Grameen Bank to offer these loans to bypass the
middleman’s loan rates. These micro-loans indeed help them to have better
profit margin and so they are able to repay back the loan on time.

5. ∗Muhammad Yunus help revolutionized the idea of microfinancing to poor
villages to help them create a spark of personal initiative and enterprise
necessary to pull them out of poverty.
∗He created micro-loans and in 1983 formed the Grameen Bank, which mean
‘village bank’ which was founded on principles of trust and solidarity.
∗Borrowers of these loans are usually women which account for 97% and over
97% of the loans are paid back, a recovery rate higher than any other banking
system.
∗Muhammad Yunus was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for his effort to
reach out to the poor and help them in effort of creating economic and social
development from bottom up.

6. ∗The action of Muhammad Yunus greatly impacted the poor people and help them
to alleviate their poverty cycle tremendously. He not only helped the poor in
Bangladesh, but also the world as they found that his microfinancing scheme was
workable in other countries.
∗This has impacted not only the way to help those who are in poverty, but also
advocate self-help process and give the poor a chance to raise their personal
initiative and enterprising spirit with a small amount to start.
