Crowdsourcing for the Climate: Why Trees are the New Currency

  1. 1. Why Trees? Trees are the best technology to halt global warming. Crowd Sourcing Week 24/11/2016
  2. 2. Watch our 2 min Stephen Fry video
  3. 3. The Paris Climate Agreement The world's first universal climate agreement Summarized in 5 points 1. Limit temperature rise 'well below' 2 °C 2. First universal climate agreement 3. Helping poorer nations 4. Publishing greenhouse gas reduction targets 5. Carbon neutral by 2050? December 2015
  4. 4. It’s too late to talk only about carbon emission reduction • +2 °C is too high • +1,29 °C (-+0,22) is already happening (Aug 2016) • Running out of budget: 25 years left (10 GtC p.a.) • Inertia: more carbon is stored in oceans and will take decades to be released. • We need to remove carbon from the atmosphere !! • Trees are the best carbon sink. The Paris Climate Agreement The world's first universal climate agreement
  5. 5. Trees are the best technology to halt global warming They remove carbon from the atmosphere and restore water cycles. 50% of a tree biomass is carbon 50% of carbon emissions stays in the atmosphere 25% are absorbed by oceans 25% must be absorbed by forest (land-based ecosystems). Trees = Negative Emissions Technologies (NET’s.) Forests are global cooling systems Long-term benefits for water availability and for climate: • Promote precipitation. • Natural cooling systems (evapotranspiration). • Generate air and moisture flows.
  6. 6. • For a 50 % chance of staying below 2°C, AR5 identified a budget of 820Gt of carbon. • Remaining budget is 305GtC. At current rates (10 GtC per year), we only have 30 years to go (from 2011) 175 billion trees by 2030 The NY Declaration (Sept 2014) suggests 2 actions 1. Deforestation -50% by 2020 and -100% by 2030 2. Reforestation 350m ha Together= 40-80% of annual emissions !! This would double the time to transition to a low carbon economy. Reforestation : 20% of the of the 10Gt of annual global carbon emissions! How much is 350m ha? = an area the size of India, = 175 billion trees = 24 trees per person on earth. 50% of a tree biomass is carbon We need to restore an area the size of India Trees are the best technology to halt global warming They remove carbon from the atmosphere and restore water cycles.
  7. 7. IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE … BIODIVERSITY SOIL RESTORATION WATER AVAILABILITY WATER QUALITY CLEAN AIR POVERTY ALLEVIATION WOMEN EMPOWERMENT ACCESS TO EDUCATION…
  8. 8. Wealth creation through forest-friendly employment (Goal 1) Sustainable food production (seed and fruits) (Goal 2) Promote health and well-being (Goal 3) Knowledge through outreach and training (Goal 4) Empowerment of women (Goal 5) Water stewardship (Goal 6) Efficient use of sustainably produced wood-fuel (Goal 7) Provide income and employment (Goal 8) Innovative forest-economies (Goal 9) Reduced inequality through income, inclusion, opportunity (Goal 10) Community development and cohesion (Goal 11) Promote sustainable use of natural resources (Goal 12) Climate change mitigation and adaptation (Goal 13) Marine coastal restoration (mangroves) (Goal 14) Restoration of forests, ecosystems and biodiversity (Goal 15) Social inclusion (Goal 16) Building impactful partnerships with global private sector (Goal 17) The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) When you plant a tree, without perhaps realizing it, you impact all SDG’s and especially goals 1,2,5,6,8,13,15,17:
  9. 9. PLANTING OVER 13 MILLION TREES IN 14 PROJECTS INDIA BRAZIL ZAMBIA ETHIOPIA MADAGASCAR SENEGAL TANZANIA PHILIPPINES KENYA…
  10. 10. TREES AS A NEW CURRENCY WeForest works with over 180 companies … TO DRIVE SALES & ATTRACT NEW CUSTOMERS DRIVE REPEAT PURCHASE OFFER A DISRUPTIVE COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE ENGAGE CUSTOMERS ENGAGE EMPLOYEES PROVEN SUCCESS
  11. 11. What can YOU do? AT HOME? AT WORK? IN YOUR NETWORK? WHEN SHOPPING…
  12. 12. QUESTIONS? “WE ARE THE FIRST GENERATION TO FEEL THE IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE… AND THE LAST GENERATION THAT CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT”.
