10. After saying goodbye to roommates
and saying hello to mom’s curfew
and dad’s basement,
I started getting loads of
unsolicited financial advice.
11. I was told to…
Just skip
out on
payment!!
Postpone
payment!
Speak with an
“inexpensive
loan
consolidation
expert”
12. I started getting nervous thinking about how I’d have to go
120
MONTHS
making payments.
I mean, how many things have you
done every month for 10 years?
So, I made an important phone call.
13. I spoke with the people at my school’s financial aid office.
They advised me to…
Use the
websites and
tools available.
These websites
could help you
take control of
your financial
situation.
14. I was skeptical, but I checked out the
link they sent me.
www. studentaid.ed.gov
21. These online tools - calculators, videos, and the
Repayment Estimator – became my weapons
against delinquency.
22. Now, I save student
loan borrowers
from crushing
student loan
payments, fill them
with repayment
confidence, and
wear great elastic
pants.
I make it look easy
– because with
these online
resources – it is!
23. Knowledge is power!
And knowing my servicer and their contact information,
well, it didn’t make me stronger than a locomotive or
faster than a speeding bullet, but it EMPOWERED me.
24. Soon I was the one offering advice, but my
advice was good and I’ll share it with you . . .
25. Go to www.studentaid.ed.gov log-in and see all your
federal loans and get your servicer name and contact
information.
26. With your servicer behind
you and all your loans
listed in front of you, use
the Repayment Estimator
at
http://1.usa.gov/19S8Yr1.
When I first used the
Estimator, it was like a light
being turned on in a dark
room. I was able to see just
how much more affordable
my payment would be by
filing for Income Based
Repayment.
27. You may find that Standard Repayment is the
most cost effective in the long run or that
Graduated Payments can help you get
affordable payments now, but still pay off
your loans in 10 years.
Each student borrower in distress is
different, but all can be saved by seeing the
light.
28. After conferring with your sidekick and using the
Estimator, you can complete paperwork to change your
repayment plan at https://studentloans.gov.
The forms aren’t easy, but it’s worth it to complete them.
29. Next, make sure you can make your new monthly payment
by creating a budget for each month. There are many
ways to make a budget, but an easy template is available
through Microsoft. Download it at http://bit.ly/VQfybB
30. Congratulations! You’ve created a repayment
plan, but we’re not done yet. Set-up
automated payments. Not only will it save you
stamps, it’ll save you .25% on your interest
rates. Contact your servicer.
31. Next, brace
yourself for a sense
of pride and
accomplishment to
wash over you
because you’ve
taken the steps to
stare down your
student loans.
With this challenge
aside, proceed
boldly with the rest
of your financial
life.
32. Fighting default is tiring
and now that you’ve set
yourself up for success
grab some popcorn and
relax with some great
videos available at

39. My world is brighter now. The weight of debt has
been lifted off my shoulders and I am helping
people all over the country take charge of their
student loans.
