- The title of our conference is “ From decisions to disciples ” . The title is there, but the practice not so much. Today I ’ ll give you an introduction in what e-learning is and how this can be on of the keys in the process “ from decisions to disciples ” . Later also mLearning (Jerry Hertzler wasn ’ t able to come).
- This is my family... I ’ m married already for 17 years. Working with Agapè for more than 8 years Pastor of a local church.
- For years we know quite well how to bring people the message of the Gospel. But... what to do after that? How many people had the opportunity to learn walking with Christ? This is even for many local churches a challenge. You can bring people to Christ but how to make them disciples?? This is what Jesus said! He didn ’ t say: Go and tell. Matthew 28:18-20 All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. So this conference isn ’ t helpful if we ’ re not taking the next step: make disciples, not only converts.
- I have a dream that the body of Christ will rise up. That newborn Christians will grow in their faith and their dedicated life... That they are the motivated go-ers for Christ. This is the single one reason the Starterbible course was developed... Later more on Starterbible. First the Jesus.net strategy.
- E-learning is nothing new... Already for 12 years we ’ re using e-learning is evangelism and discipleship. Already thousands of people participated in one of our courses. From the beginning e-learning was helpful in connecting with people online to bring them in the local body of Christ. It ’ s part of a process. This is in fact the whole Jesus.net strategy.
- Start with some definitions: What is web 2.0? Well, it ’ s not that complicated. And social media is not that different from web 2.0. These are the two sides from the same coin. This is important if we ’ re talking about e-learning right now. E-learning is nothing new at all. It ’ s there already for years. But... things are changing rapidly, and also the dynamics and opportunities in using e-learning for whatever purpose is changing. In this presentation just some of the basics for e-learning and the steps we took in using this dynamic in our ministry.
- For years this is how learning looked like. You brought people together on a specific time on a specific place with a specific teacher. And to be honest, it works still really well. But you have limitations. And new technology can help you in reach more people.
- So you can reach more people using tools on the internet. You do not have to be on the same place at the same time. But... you cannot just transfer the same as you did real life. Online conversations and relationships have another dynamic than real-life conversations and relationships. So do not try just to bring online what you do offline. Design for the online dynamic, for this ‘ other world ’ . “ designed for the web ” .
- More and more we understand blended learning. It ’ s not either / or, but people are learning in different ways and styles. People are meeting on the old fashioned way but also learning in the meanwhile. For a lot of companies it ’ s part of the strategy and training: you have a live training, but you have to do online training to have the maximum result out of that. This is where e-learning is evolving. So it ’ s not Internet as something else, but it ’ s complementary to the real-life dynamic.
- There ’ s also something as social learning. Learning not just in the formal settings, in classrooms (online or offline). But also learning without noticing it ’ s learning... Reading a book, an article, Listening to the radio, music, a sermon, a story Watching TV, a documentary, presentation,
- People are learning by meeting other people. You ’ re talking about everything, so also the things you ’ re learning, or experiencing. Without knowing it you ’ re in a learning process. This is... INFORMAL LEARNING . Very important in learning. But it ’ s not guided by what I wrote, planned, etc. This is the growing area for learning and e-learning. You can imagine this is a part that ’ s also very important for evangelism and discipleship.
- The easy availability of new, social media tools has meant that individuals are already managing their own personal (informal) learning... that is they search for and access all kinds of resources: videos, podcasts, blogs, etc, whenever they need them, they create their own resources and store them for easy retrieval
- Informal learning is also making connections with other (like-minded) people with whom they can communicate and share ideas, resources, experiences, etc. It ’ s part of the informal learning process. In discussions and conversations with other people you ’ re continuous learning.
- Everything is brought together in this infographic: “ The conversation ” The art of listening, learning and sharing ” . You see... where to start, where to connect. Bottomline: in e-learning the role of a LMS (Learning Management System) is lesser and lesser important. It ’ s not delivering just content and courses. It ’ s just a matter of The art of connecting .
- Don ’ t forget the influence of mobile internet and mobile connection. There is something like social-learning, and that will change the use of eLearning dramatically. These figures are important.
- Think about everything people are using for CONNECTING... You can use them also for connection in the whole learning process...
- QUESTION: How can what we know from e-learning help us in discipleship strategies ?? Formal versus informal Group-wise versus individual Real life versus online Now switch to discipleship
- What is discipleship? For years we focussed on “ knowledge ” , but very important is the personal relationship! But also the idea and experience with discipleship is based on a real-life relationship and it ’ s also (partly) a process in a group... ART OF CONNECTING
- Question is: how is discipleship done in our time. Where is your group Who is your mentor? Bottom-line question: WHAT IS DISCIPLESHIP
- This is our group, in our house... Meeting very frequently. Focus on learning, sharing, growing, ministry... Our question is: how can we do online what we also do with this group. It ’ s not 1-on-1 translation. But there are principles. One of our principles is to help people grow as a mature christian, healthy independent of people, depending on God. One of our basics is helping people understand the Bible themselves. That ’ s why I started with starterbible.com. You can learn a lot of principles. Better is to help people using the source, the lifeline to God.
- Where does starterbible come from? PERSONAL STORY I love to have everyone in the house... But that doesn ’ t fit in many ways: - our house is not big enough - we do not have enough time in a day - for many we do not live close - the group will be to big for a healthy dynamic - etc. But everyone need to know how to live with God. I ’ ve a real passion for the Bible, already for years. I ’ m sometimes a little shocked how much people ‘ know ’ about God and themselves without ‘ knowing ’ the Bible. You can learn “ 10 basics ” or “ principles ” . I believe we have to help people explore the source itself. So they can dive into the source for knowing God personally more and more.
- Basic idea for starterbible is: Experience the Bible yourself. We just guide you when you dive into, helping you asking questions.
- The participants (MARTIEN) I became a child of God just to read the Bible. God Himself explained the Good News to me andshowed me I needed Jesus in my life.When I look at the people in churches I noticed that many of them find it difficult to read andunderstand the Bible. With StarterBible we help them to discover how great it is to read the Bible,the love letter of God.To be a mentor in StarterBible (and also an e-coach with KnowingGod) helped me to talk normalDutch and not church language. We as Christians talk in a strange language that people don ’ tunderstand.Also I learned a lot about the Bible, because you get sometimes questions you have to think about orlook things up. Very inspiring.
- PS: come Sunday to the Starterbible seminar for a live demo and more opportunity to explain the concept and the technological things. Technical: Site is build in WordPress . Major reason to separate courses from the ‘ normal ’ site is that a LMS system is developed for -COURSES- and not for building beautiful -SITES- The courses are build in eFront , a Learning Management System (LMS). New bright system on this area. We ’ re using the Community++ version, 1x fee of €379,-. There is also a free system available. It ’ s not open source like Moodle, they developed an API so you can add functionality to it.
- Our ideas for the future... - available in English so other ministries can use it. - social connection (maintain relationships with participants...) - other courses - NEXT SLIDE: every one can start / host his own group
- We still develop concepts that are depending on our (internal) organization. In fact we ’ re limiting the growth by this approach. The bigger the group, the harder to manage. How can this become a movement? So... we have a dream... >>
- If we can help every individual christian reaching their own people? Disciple the people they know? So if we can come to the situation where every christian can host their own Why Jesus course and Starterbible course?!! We ’ re not technically and philosophically ready for this. But this is where we ’ re going to.
- And one question we have... how can we make better use of the social connections? The discipleship process is very relational. Social networks can be very supportive in this.
