In this session, we will explore key challenges with function interactions and coordination, addressing these problems using Enterprise Integration Patterns (EIP) and modern approaches with the latest innovations from the Apache Camel community: Apache Camel is the Swiss army knife of integration, and the most powerful integration framework. In this session you will hear about the latest features in the brand new 3rd generation. Camel K, is a lightweight integration platform that enables Enterprise Integration Patterns to be used natively on any Kubernetes cluster. When used in combination with Knative, a framework that adds serverless building blocks to Kubernetes, and the subatomic execution environment of Quarkus, Camel K can mix serverless features such as auto-scaling, scaling to zero, and event-based communication with the outstanding integration capabilities of Apache Camel. - Apache Camel 3 - Camel K - Camel Quarkus We will show how Camel K works. We’ll also use examples to demonstrate how Camel K makes it easier to connect to cloud services or enterprise applications using some of the 300 components that Camel provides.

This was a talk that Kelvin Chu and I just gave at the SF Bay Area Spark Meetup 5/14 at Palantir Technologies. We discussed the Spark Job Server (http://github.com/ooyala/spark-jobserver), its history, example workflows, architecture, and exciting future plans to provide HA spark job contexts. We also discussed the use case of the job server at Ooyala to facilitate fast query jobs using shared RDD and a shared job context, and how we integrate with Apache Cassandra.

Developing Java based microservices ready for the world of containers The so-called experts are saying microservices and containers will change the way we build, maintain, operate, and integrate applications. This talk is intended for Java developers who wants to hear and see how you can develop Java microservices that are ready to run in containers. In this talk we will build a set of Java based Microservices that uses a mix of technologies with: - Spring Boot with Apache Camel - Apache Tomcat with Apache Camel You will see how we can build small discrete microservices with these Java technologies and build and deploy on the Kubernets/OpenShift3 container platform. We will discuss practices how to build distributed and fault tolerant microservices using technologies such as Kubernetes Services, Camel EIPs, Netflixx Hysterix, and Ribbon. We will use Zipkin service tracing across all four Java based microservices to provide a visualization of timings and help highlight latency problems in our mesh of microservices. And the self healing and fault tolerant aspects of the Kubernetes/OpenShift3 platform is also discussed and demoed when we let the chaos monkeys loose killing containers. This talk is a 50/50 mix between slides and demo.

Livy is a new open source Spark REST Server for submitting and interacting with your Spark jobs from anywhere. Livy is conceptually based on the incredibly popular IPython/Jupyter, but implemented to better integrate into the Hadoop ecosystem with multi users. Spark can now be offered as a service to anyone in a simple way: Spark shells in Python or Scala can be ran by Livy in the cluster while the end user is manipulating them at his own convenience through a REST api. Regular non-interactive applications can also be submitted. The output of the jobs can be introspected and returned in a tabular format, which makes it visualizable in charts. Livy can point to a unique Spark cluster and create several contexts by users. With YARN impersonation, jobs will be executed with the actual permissions of the users submitting them. Livy also enables the development of Spark Notebook applications. Those are ideal for quickly doing interactive Spark visualizations and collaboration from a Web browser! This talk is technical and details the architecture and design decisions taken for developing this server, as well as its internals. It also describes the alternatives we tried and the challenges that were faced. It's not widely known that the OpenStack Images API v2 contains an implementation of a "tasks" API that can be customized by operators to enable asynchronous processing of long-running operations. NETWAYS is using OpenNebula in their multi-customer cloud for years now. Having the roots in a typical XEN replacement, more and more cloud functionalities are used in production now. The system is heavily coupled with Puppet and all other internal systems like monitoring, backup and accounting. The talk will focus on the hurdles taken in the last years starting with various design considerations and different steps made to achieve the “final” architecture NETWAYS is using today. It’ will also give a detailed view onthe current setup and connected subsystems. Bio: Bernd Erk, Managing Director, has overseen the Managed Services, Consulting and Development business areas at NETWAYS since 2007. Ensuring the success and smooth operation of all customer projects and business processes, Bernd’s technical expertise stretches across Systems Management, Managed Services and Software Development. A contributor to Linux Magazine and Linux Technical Review in Germany, Bernd regularly publishes articles and presents on open source topics ranging across Icinga monitoring, MySQL database monitoring, OpenNebula Cloud framework and performance tuning among others. Bernd was previously Operating Systems Specialist at Quelle Schickedanz AG & Co., where he worked heavily with Solaris, HPUX and Oracle databases. After which, Bernd spent 8 years as Business Unit Manager at Ise-Informatik where he dealt with Oracle databases and service oriented architectures.

This session covers our experience with using the Spark and Shark frameworks for running real-time queries on top of Cassandra data.We will start by surveying the current Cassandra analytics landscape, including Hadoop and HIVE, and touch on the use of custom input formats to extract data from Cassandra. While systems like Apache Spark have moved beyond a simple map-reduce model, many data scientists and scientific users still struggle with complex cluster management and configuration tools when trying to do data processing in the cloud. Recently, cloud providers have offered infrastructure such as AWS Lambda to run event-driven, stateless functions as micro-services. In this model, a function is deployed once and is invoked repeatedly whenever new inputs arrive and elastically scales with input size. In this session, the speakers claim that microservices on serverless infrastructure present a viable platform for eliminating cluster management overhead and fulfilling the promise of elasticity in cloud computing for all users. Their key insight is that they can dynamically inject code into these stateless functions and, combined with remote storage, they can build a data processing system that inherits the elasticity of the serverless model while addressing the simplicity required by end users. Using PyWren, their implementation on AWS Lambda, they show that this model is general enough to implement a number of distributed computing models, such as BSP, efficiently. Learn about a number of scientific and machine learning applications that they have built with PyWren, and how this model could be used to develop a serverless-Spark in the future.

In this talk I am going to show how to build a system that can ingest data produced at separate geo located areas (think AWS and it’s many regions) and replicate it to a central cluster where it can be further processed and analysed. I will present an example of how to build a system like this one by using RabbitMQ Federation to replicate data across AWS Regions and RabbitMQ support for many protocols to produce/consume data. To help with scalability I am going to show an interesting way to implement sharded queues with RabbitMQ by using the Consistent Hash Exchange.

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry. This new version of the popular embedded device comes with a new iteration of Broadcom’s VideoCore GPU platform, and was released with a fully open source driver stack, developed by Igalia.
