Homework 1

  1. 1. Supernatural CW Wednesdays at 9pm Characters: Angels, demons, broken and damaged humans, mythical monsters Very family based, many conflicts between family bonds Narrative: Two brothers fight various beings in order to save the world and eachother. This is done with the aid of a fallen angel, their friend and extended family member. They explore the concept of the apocalypse, many deaths and grievances with in their family, loss of loved ones and betrayal. Even mental health to a smaller extent and occasionally romantic relationships. This episode focuses on the angel, Castiel, and the idea of his supposed betrayal as he tells his story, focusing on his relationship with his friends/family, the conflict he has and creates with them and his relationship with one of the brothers, Dean, who tries to stay faithful as Castiel attempts to resolve it.
  2. 2. Mise en scene Set often in a car in many shots, an important object which is dark lines, old fashioned and quite loud and masculine. Important to Dean. Dress in various layers, khaki, tan and brown colours. Again, masculine. Not very pristine or posh, much rougher. A lot set at night, in old and dusty homes. In areas where experiments or torture occur the room is bright white, unaturally so. Extras as supernatural beings that are less important. Bad guy dresses in black. Flashbacks- duller than the actual show, grainy, black and white. He tells his story outside in nature, as an angel something important to him. Much happens in abandoned houses with low lighting. Sound: Dramatic, dark music in the background. Bass heavy. The characters listen to a lot of classic rock. Title sequence is glass shattering. The angel's voice is low, gravely as when he speaks in true form it can break glass.
  3. 3. Icons Weapons, knives, guns, torture equpment Old fashioned, classic muscle car Dark abandoned houses Industry: CW, shown on Sky Living in the UK. Many cast videos and the cast often go to conventions and hold them. DVDs are available and many online alternatives, twitter accounts. Audience: The cast are mostly male, very few female characters stick around or are even involved, it is a very masculine programme but finds many women watch it with the glamour cast (unrealistically attractive) It is a show that has a large fandom of mainly teenage girls which reside on tumblr and other such blogging website which leads to fanfictions and art.
  4. 4. Elementary Sky Living Tuesdays at 9 Characters: Many are law enforcers, it focuses on crime. One is a unoffical law enforcer, drug addict and other a sober companion. All very good at what they do. Narrative: When Sherlock Holmes' father sends him a sober companion to stop him from relapsing into drugs. Watson, who used to be a surgen but messed up, then accompanies him on perculiar cases where he deduces and solves the crime with his quirks and intelligence but can not leave her in case he relapses.
  5. 5. Mise en scene A lot set in an apartment which Holmes and Watson share. It is usually messy, unclean as he elects to not care about personal hygine and so leaves it scruffy. He dresses lazily, simple T-Shirts and jeans which are unprofessional. Watson instead, she dresses well. Feminine but not sexualised. The lighting is generally natural, a lot of time also spent in the homes of victims or family. Sound: Gentle, sorrowful music in the background. Regular dialogue but contrast between the english accent of Sherlock and American accents that surround him. Much is spent talking about cases or banter between Holmes and Watson. Often Watson speaks softly, attempts to comfort. The title sequence is classy, classical music, almost the sort of music that would accompany a mouse or something running away, setting off a chain reaction.
  6. 6. Icons A lot is done on mobile phones, also coats are often worn which can act as a way to identify characters. Cabs are also something often seen. Industry: CBS, but shown on Sky Living in the UK. It is shown most often in the evenings at 9, prime time. It is available to watch online on channel things such as Iplayers but not as multiplatform. Audience: I believe it is probably for older, adults. It does not hold as much to fandoms as some other shows that may be considered similar such as BBC Sherlock. I belive it may be mostly male but the involvement of a main character beign a woman may make it appeal to women more too. Many were put off of the show due to the female enterpriation of Watson and similarities to BBC Sherlock so may see it negitively.
