the variety of dangers of
Not so very long ago obesity and all of its accompanying complications were limited to the realm
of adulthood. In the United States things have gotten worse over the last few decades. In addition
to having more adults than before, kids and teens are developing this condition at younger ages
than ever before. For children the most obvious influences are typically their parents though
education and awareness raising are also super important. The parents, though, are the ones
who are responsible for offering the most guidance and being the most positive role models
properly. Kids who are obese are facing imminent problems with their mental and physical health.
Beyond that, there are a lot of dangerous risks that will have both the means and the opportunity
to develop into real problems later on in life. This means that kids are dealt a terrible hand that is
nearly impossible to overcome. This is a trend that has been watched carefully by researchers
and professionals since the 1980s. Young kids, pre-teens and even teenagers have been slowly
and surely gaining more weight and there are severe health consequences to this. A plethora of
research and study has been performed in the last twenty-plus years. One thing we know without
a doubt is that obesity that happens during the younger years is a major risk factor in terrible
health problems that happen in the later years. It is very important for parents to understand that
this story is actually more involved. Clinically obese and overweight kids are going to experience
effects from their condition long before they mature into adulthood. The press have been covering
childhood obesity for a very long time. But this has made almost no difference, even in the US
where it has reached epidemic proportions.
Because we all know what the causes are, we are not going to discuss them or blame people.
Children can have major health risks that may be life-threatening in later years if they are officially
obese or overweight. Suffering physically and even psychologically is what a noticeable
percentage of an entire generation experience. It is hard enough to be a teen without having to
endure being bullied about weight by others as well. An obese child has to face some of the
following things that we'll be looking at. In terms of health-related problems, time is an important
factor. What we mean is it takes a good deal of time for the serious symptoms to begin surfacing.
Still, childhood obesity definitely sets the stage for problems later on. Still, a child's youth can
keep them from suffering from the sorts of medical problems that plague obese adults. The
condition still filters into problems discovered later in life though. Some of the more serious
possibilities are stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure, some types of cancer, liver disease and
heart disease.|Childhood obesity is a major and constant problem in the United States and this
has had professionals from every stripe confused and befuddled. It doesn't help that almost all
solid food sold in the US contains a bunch of high fructose corn syrup. But that is an issue for
another time. One of the things that makes childhood obesity such a painful subject is that obese
kids often seem like they haven't been given an honest shot at life and that is a tragedy. Kids who
suffer from childhood obesity are forced to deal with things like back pain, joint pain, arthritis,
Type II diabetes and terrible bullying from their peers who don't understand the condition. This is
a hard and terrible subject and we'll look at it some more in this article.
The obese child is on a terrible road heading toward terrible health problems. For example, fatty
liver disease is just about the most common disease that will affect the liver. Some years ago
people typically associated liver problems with drinking too much and sclerosis. Today, however,
we know that fatty livery disease is caused by long term obesity. What will usually make the
primary liver issues worse is that the metabolism of an obese person is terribly dysfunctional. The
liver further helps people by sorting out toxins and anything else that is not good for your body.
This, then, puts more pressure on the bodily systems of children and teens who are obese. There
is a wide variety to the medical conditions that are going to be experienced by any young child,
preteen or teenager who is obese. Plenty of things influence these kids, like genetics. Severely
obese kids and teens are more prone to conditions that adversely effect their bones and joints.
Lots of the time, problems that are connected to the load bearing joints are the first to show up.
The feet, ankles, knees and hips are particularly prone to skeletal stress. Usually kids are going to
have to deal with back pain as well as joints that are slightly swollen all the time. These kids also
are commonly diagnosed with arthritis. The whole human body is stressed in physical areas if you
are overweight. If a child is overweight then this may cause them to have sleep apnea, which can
be potentially dangerous. There are also problems that interfere with their normal breathing.
The obese young adult or child may develop asthma due to their weight condition. Another term
often used is exercise intolerance, and it arises from the various challenges facing the normal
breathing process. We all have seen the labored breathing that an overweight person seems to
always have. This is caused by the body having to work harder and breathe harder. Your
cardiovascular system is just going to get more stress on it because of this. High blood pressure
and hypertension are pretty much synonymous with obesity no matter how old a person is. There
are some major medical conditions that don't get seen during childhood obesity and others that
are likely to appear. For kids who are severely overweight or obese, high blood pressure is a very
common problem. Not only is there physical stress put on the body from the extra weight; there is
intense psychological stress as well. Obese children are routinely abused verbally and physically
by their classmates. That can all build up into a severely high stress situation for the child which
contributes to the raising of his or her blood pressure. Type II diabetes is worth mentioning
because it is up at the top of the list in terms of likelihood of occurring in kids, teens and even
adults. It makes real sense that this condition would develop. This specific kind of diabetes is
different than Type I because it can be prevented sometimes. Type II diabetes is most often
caused by obesity and other weight related issues and a prolonged sedentary existence. People
who are obese have more strain put on their bodies to produce insulin. There is obviously an
much greater amount that has to receive it. Type II diabetes happens, then, as the body becomes
more resistant to the insulin it produces. Research has been conducted everywhere that confirms
that obstructive sleep apnea is a lot more widespread in children and teens who are obese. This
particular condition is especially dangerous because it causes the child's airway to become
blocked while he or she is sleeping. Obese and overweight children are more prone to snoring but
that is slightly deceiving according to those doing the research. The reason for the snoring (some
of the time anyway) is OSA or Obstructive Sleep Apnea. One possible approach that has been
studied is using the procedure, adenotonsillectomy, to treat this condition in obese teens and
younger children.
"Kids are cruel" is one of the oldest and most common expressions that people hear. Perhaps
most of us have experienced that truism when we were younger. Kids who suffer from obesity are
a lot more likely to have to deal with lots of teasing and, often, being humiliated verbally. It is any
wonder how these children can get through all those years of school with their sanity intact.
Everybody knows how possible it is to suffer consequences of that kind of abuse. The constant
assault can have a major impact on things like the children's self esteem and confidence, etc.
Mostly the risks will develop in your cardiovascular system. Not only do obese children have
elevated cholesterol but they also have generally fatty blood profiles which involves triglycerides.
These heart diseases require immediate intervention because they start early on in life. Imagine
your child having to take prescription medication to counter their high cholesterol. If an adult starts
taking this medication then there are known side effects that they will have to accept.
The situation is only complicated for a young child or teen due to such medicines.
Almost everybody who suffers from obesity will also suffer from a wide variety of psychological
issues too. Children who feel like they are being constantly abused by their classmates are more
likely to suffer from things like low self confidence and self esteem, high stress and anxiety levels
and might even hate themselves. Those are the silent symptoms the obese child or teen endures,
and perhaps even all alone. When the situation goes on long enough and gets severe enough it
could cause the victim to develop behaviors that border on or even are sociopathic. We haven't
found any significant data on how many obese high school kids go on to get a college education.
Our guess is that there aren't that many or that the number of obese high school students is much
higher than the number of obese college students. Who can really blame them, though when they
might be imagining more years of abuse and torture. There are also gender specific problems in
terms of obesity in young girls who have started going through puberty. Women and girls who are
obese are, for example, prone to problems with their menstrual cycles. This happens because the
body doesn't have the ability to produce hormones properly. This then wreaks havoc on the girl or
woman's menstrual cycle. Obesity contributes to these problems for women. Another common
result of female obesity is, if the hormonal interference is big, the woman can become sterile.
After that you have to wonder what other female bodily processes are going to be impacted when
there is this severe level of hormonal disruption. The human body needs its hormones to be
normal in order to keep the metabolism function healthy.
Science is still trying to puzzle out whether or not early onset obesity has a direct relationship with
early onset puberty. However, there's a particular amount of common sense to be had in looking
at what we know. To use a couple of examples we already know that kids who are overweight
and obese go into puberty sooner and grow more quickly than non obese kids. This still, though,
requires a clearer determination of causality than currently exists. While this is obviously not a
really serious threat to the health of obesity related conditions there are definitely issues that can
be related to the early onset of puberty.|This goes hand in hand with the bullying and general
ostracizing the kids encounter at school, it is almost a guarantee that obese children and teens
are pretty much guaranteed to develop social disorders. One other term used is "social
disabilities" in which there are high degrees of depression, extreme levels of unhappiness, etc.
These result in extreme stress levels which are widely known to cause problems both
psychologically and physically. Some obese kids deal with this by becoming bullies. What is
clearly happening is the bullying behavior is an expression of the anger that has accumulated
most likely from being bullied, themselves.|For an obese child, the prospects do not appear very
promising for a few reasons. Health problems and diseases are risks that an obese young child
has to face when they become an adult. What about being able to reverse this condition?
We know that obese teens are more likely to become very obese adults by 16 times more than a
normal teen. That obviously does not bode well for those teens. As an adult these children are
looking at a very diminished quality of life because the risk factors start to develop when they are
young. Teenagers have a faster rate of personality development and socialization than kids of
other ages. In addition to those processes, a teenager's body image is at a particularly dicey
stage. Obviously an obese teen will have an extraordinarily difficult time achieving any semblance
of normal development in those areas. What happens is the obese teen will leave high school at
potentially severe disadvantages. They will have a harder time competing and reaching normal
levels of success.|You already know about the severe social stigma that is attached to kids and
teens who suffer from obesity. Going to school each day must be something along the lines of
unbearable. The effects of prolonged teasing, hurtful comments and bullying can cause
psychological scars that can be damaging for a person's whole life. Every person is going to react
differently to this, for sure. The ripple effects of being obese are huge and serious, and we
seriously think many obese teens and adults may seek counseling so they can deal with the
damage done. There is a real problem with kids and teens who suffer from obesity that affects
other people too. You need to think about the cost this has on overall society. Obese kids will
usually become obese adults, and there are costs associated with medical, lost time from work,
etc. This makes obesity society's problem though most people don't see it that way.
Obviously, by the time they have reached this condition, these kids are at a tremendous social
and physical disadvantage. We all know that it is difficult to lose weight and that the only way to
truly make it happen is when you have a high level of determination and support to make it
happen. Friends and parents need to be as supportive as possible. Young adults and kids alike
are resilient people and have an easier time bouncing back once healthy directions have been
taken. Of course, it depends on whether or not any medical conditions are present.
We think that it is right that obese children should have a plan of action so they can start to lose
this weight. But we do know that these children are in many unique situations. This situation has
eluded being reversed so far, but it is very serious.
If you are a teen or adult who suffers from obesity, it is important to talk to someone who is
informed and qualified to help you with your condition. It is likely that you need some education as
to the causes of your condition. The good news is that you can absolutely do something about
this and it is never ever too late to begin working your way back to optimum health. Obese
children and young adults can accurately be described as the walking wounded. This is because
of the way that obesity scars the body and the spirit.

"Kids are cruel" is one of the oldest and most common expressions that people hear. Perhaps most of us have experienced that truism when we were younger. Kids who suffer from obesity are
  • 3. a lot more likely to have to deal with lots of teasing and, often, being humiliated verbally. It is any wonder how these children can get through all those years of school with their sanity intact. Everybody knows how possible it is to suffer consequences of that kind of abuse. The constant assault can have a major impact on things like the children's self esteem and confidence, etc. Mostly the risks will develop in your cardiovascular system. Not only do obese children have elevated cholesterol but they also have generally fatty blood profiles which involves triglycerides. These heart diseases require immediate intervention because they start early on in life. Imagine your child having to take prescription medication to counter their high cholesterol. If an adult starts taking this medication then there are known side effects that they will have to accept. The situation is only complicated for a young child or teen due to such medicines. Almost everybody who suffers from obesity will also suffer from a wide variety of psychological issues too. Children who feel like they are being constantly abused by their classmates are more likely to suffer from things like low self confidence and self esteem, high stress and anxiety levels and might even hate themselves. Those are the silent symptoms the obese child or teen endures, and perhaps even all alone. When the situation goes on long enough and gets severe enough it could cause the victim to develop behaviors that border on or even are sociopathic. We haven't found any significant data on how many obese high school kids go on to get a college education. Our guess is that there aren't that many or that the number of obese high school students is much higher than the number of obese college students. Who can really blame them, though when they might be imagining more years of abuse and torture. There are also gender specific problems in terms of obesity in young girls who have started going through puberty. Women and girls who are obese are, for example, prone to problems with their menstrual cycles. This happens because the body doesn't have the ability to produce hormones properly. This then wreaks havoc on the girl or woman's menstrual cycle. Obesity contributes to these problems for women. Another common result of female obesity is, if the hormonal interference is big, the woman can become sterile. After that you have to wonder what other female bodily processes are going to be impacted when there is this severe level of hormonal disruption. The human body needs its hormones to be normal in order to keep the metabolism function healthy. Science is still trying to puzzle out whether or not early onset obesity has a direct relationship with early onset puberty. However, there's a particular amount of common sense to be had in looking at what we know. To use a couple of examples we already know that kids who are overweight and obese go into puberty sooner and grow more quickly than non obese kids. This still, though, requires a clearer determination of causality than currently exists. While this is obviously not a really serious threat to the health of obesity related conditions there are definitely issues that can be related to the early onset of puberty.|This goes hand in hand with the bullying and general ostracizing the kids encounter at school, it is almost a guarantee that obese children and teens are pretty much guaranteed to develop social disorders. One other term used is "social disabilities" in which there are high degrees of depression, extreme levels of unhappiness, etc. These result in extreme stress levels which are widely known to cause problems both psychologically and physically. Some obese kids deal with this by becoming bullies. What is
  • 4. clearly happening is the bullying behavior is an expression of the anger that has accumulated most likely from being bullied, themselves.|For an obese child, the prospects do not appear very promising for a few reasons. Health problems and diseases are risks that an obese young child has to face when they become an adult. What about being able to reverse this condition? We know that obese teens are more likely to become very obese adults by 16 times more than a normal teen. That obviously does not bode well for those teens. As an adult these children are looking at a very diminished quality of life because the risk factors start to develop when they are young. Teenagers have a faster rate of personality development and socialization than kids of other ages. In addition to those processes, a teenager's body image is at a particularly dicey stage. Obviously an obese teen will have an extraordinarily difficult time achieving any semblance of normal development in those areas. What happens is the obese teen will leave high school at potentially severe disadvantages. They will have a harder time competing and reaching normal levels of success.|You already know about the severe social stigma that is attached to kids and teens who suffer from obesity. Going to school each day must be something along the lines of unbearable. The effects of prolonged teasing, hurtful comments and bullying can cause psychological scars that can be damaging for a person's whole life. Every person is going to react differently to this, for sure. The ripple effects of being obese are huge and serious, and we seriously think many obese teens and adults may seek counseling so they can deal with the damage done. There is a real problem with kids and teens who suffer from obesity that affects other people too. You need to think about the cost this has on overall society. Obese kids will usually become obese adults, and there are costs associated with medical, lost time from work, etc. This makes obesity society's problem though most people don't see it that way. Obviously, by the time they have reached this condition, these kids are at a tremendous social and physical disadvantage. We all know that it is difficult to lose weight and that the only way to truly make it happen is when you have a high level of determination and support to make it happen. Friends and parents need to be as supportive as possible. Young adults and kids alike are resilient people and have an easier time bouncing back once healthy directions have been taken. Of course, it depends on whether or not any medical conditions are present. We think that it is right that obese children should have a plan of action so they can start to lose this weight. But we do know that these children are in many unique situations. This situation has eluded being reversed so far, but it is very serious. If you are a teen or adult who suffers from obesity, it is important to talk to someone who is informed and qualified to help you with your condition.
