Inventive
Making by
Machine
Designers are exploring techniques;
whether it is done by hand or by machine.
Old machines from the industrial area are
repaired and put to use in new production
processes. New manufacturing tech-
niques such as 3D printing and robotics
are explored.
> 3D printing
> robot manufacturing
> precision as well as imperfection
> unexpected effects
While modern manufacturing techniques
are being used, makers are increas-
ingly looking for ways to create unique
products with unexpected effects. They
are programming machines or creating
devices to allow imperfection in a highly
controlled manufacturing process.

Inventive
Colour Mood
The colour palette for Inventive consists
of bright colours: yellow, raspberry pink,
emerald green and kobalt blue. How-
ever, much of the colour effect is defined
by material and techniques. Yellow is
made transparent in glass, pink becomes
powdery by applying it in resin material,
emerald green is used in a spray-painted
gradient effect on ceramics.
> bright colours
> colours defined by material use
> gradients, transparancy, saturation
Therefore, the application of colour is just
as important as the tone itself. New is the
use of a burgundy colour in combination
with the brights. And besides a lush red
and an orange with a coral hint, a basic
brick colour is used.

Sensitive
Materializing
Purity
Designers are using materials in the
purest form possible; natural wool, un-
bleached paper and tan coloured leather.
They are using techniques to bring ot the
best in the raw materials. Weaving, fold-
ing and tufting.
> paper, bamboo, rattan
> leather and fish skin
> texture
> touch
Sustainable raw materials are being used,
and alternatives for materials that are
damaging the environment, such as cot-
ton and leather.

Sensitive
Colour Mood
The colour mood of Sensitive consists
of many soft and pastel colours, such as
pale yellow, powdery pink and very light
celadon green. But the palette is by no
means sugary: these are pastel versions
of natural colours. As a contrast, spicy
colours such as burnt orange and ocre
yellow are added.
> soft and powdery pastels
> spicy orages and yellows
> gray and denim blue as a base
Gray remains to be an important colour,
for many years already. The concrete gray
we use this year combines beautifully
with the many orangy brown and yellow
tones, as well as the pastels.

Expressive
Re-purposing
Plastics
Designers and makers are exploring new
ways to recycle material, to manufacture
in different ways. But above all, they are
finding new ways to apply material to
products. A perfectly plain and smooth
material might not be the ultimate goal
anymore. Layers and particles in material
offer a more exciting look.
> recycled plastics
> layered and compressed particles
> new manufacturing processes
> no plain and solid surfaces
You can find information on a previous life
of the materials in the plastics; just like
geologists studying sedimentation and
ground and rock formation.

Expressive
Colour Mood
The palette for the expressive style group
consists of very bold and bright colours.
A kobalt blue and a bright yellow, as well
as a shocking pink and a bright emerald
green. But what makes this mood new is
the use of black and whites in combina-
tion with all the shiny brights.
> bright and bold
> combined with black and white
> return of purple
Purple is back, and with a vengeance.
This eye popping purple is a great way to
energize a colour range, but for more ac-
cessible products there is still lots of reds
and blues to work with.
