The Milliennials are adults whose ages range
from 18 to 33. (McGlynn, 2005).

•

Members of the millennial generation have
come of age in a society infused with
technology and information (Taylor, 2012).

•

Likely to access the Internet wirelessly with a
laptop or smartphone (Zickuhr, 2010).

Young people growing up in the last
decades of the 20th century had the
following technologies:
http://www.pewinternet.org/2010/12/16/generations-2010/
Millennials use technology
regularly for informal and
formal learning.
Research has shown that with the increase of digital
technologies over the past 10 years the majority of
students have changed the way they socialize,
communicate and learn (Ito et al.,2008, Sefton-Green,
2004). When using digital media, children engage in a new
culture which is different from the older generation. With
digital technologies, children are able to create their own
private world.
•

Using instant messaging is popular with milliennials.
These online instant messaging include AIM, Yahoo
Messenger, and Trillian.
•

Music is easily accessed by the internet and due to this
milliennials listen to music and download more music
than ever. Milliennials listen to music on Pandora radio,
Songza, iTunes, Jango, and Grooveshark.
•

Today, Milliennials use online classifieds to help with
finding jobs, apartments, cars, selling and buying items.
These online classified sites include Craigslist, Kroobe,
Tedvertiser, and Extoldeals.
•

Milliennials play a lot of online games. Some of these online
games include Age of Wushu, Smite, Scarlet Blade, Dust
514, and Firefall.
•

Blogs are used a lot today because it is a great tool for
Milliennials to use to express themselves and share their
feelings and interest. Milliennials use wordpress, penzu,
livejournal, and tumblr.
Today’s students want engagements, involvement. They want to create and
make things, discover solutions and come up with new ideas; they want
flexibility and freedom, they want to be integrated and to be part of the
learning environment. They want to be able to have options/choices in the
way they learn. Allowing these technologies and media into the classroom
increase students motivation. These different medias allow for students to
expand their imagination and teachers will see an increase in class
participation.
Wikis are used so
students can express
feelings. This is great to
use in the classroom
because students can
build on their
writing/typing skills and
be able to freely express
themselves.

Students can interview or
communicate with other students
from another country or school.
Teachers can easily do this by
incorporating Skype into the
classroom. Skype supports multiple
people within a chat. This means
that several students could get on
Skype with students from their
classes, as well as global partners, to
work together on a collaborative
project (Novembe, 2010). Skype
allows students interaction and
communication skills to improve and
build.
Teachers who want students
to work independently at
home or in school and want
skills drilled, teachers can
create their own web sites.
Teacher created web use
internet resources to
motivate and support
student learning (Novembe,
2010).

Students today listen to music
while doing work. Providing music
for students on their free time will
motivate them to finish work.

iPads are helpful in
schools. Teachers can
download
educational Apps on
iPads that can help
students learning.
Technology encourages sharing of thoughts
and a diversity of thinking that characterizes a
21st century creative knowledge economy. As
students become more technically literate and
connected, they are encouraged to think with
the future in mind.
Increased
Motivation and Self

Negatives of
Technology
in Education
Milliennials rely on
this technology
everyday. Technology
is students life, it’s
their way of learning
and keeping in touch
with their family and
friends. Students take
technology to their
advantage, it gets in
the way of education.
Educators need to find
a way to incorporate
popular media and
technology into the
classroom.
