A.S.S.U.R.E. Lesson Plan
Assignment: Using the A.S.S.U.R.E. model, design a lesson plan that teaches the months of the year to a
Special Ed. 1st grade class. There are 10 boys and 7 girls; 7 students have mild to severe ADHD. 70% of
the students are white, 20% African-American, and 10% Hispanic.
A- Analyze Learners
General Characteristics:
The class consists of 17 students: 10 boys and 7 girls. Seven members of the class are diagnosed
to have mild to severe ADHD, and the class is categorized as Special Education. 70% of the students are
white, 20% African-American, and 10% Hispanic. The age range is not given, but the average 1 st grade
age ranges from 6 to 7 years old.
Specific Entry Competencies:
1st grade students have graduated past the kindergarten level and should have a basic
understanding of number and letter recognition. No information regarding the school, location,
students’ families, and use of technology was given. One can assume that the students are familiar with
art supplies, videos, music, and computers to an extent; students are not required to have complete
mastery of each.
Learning Styles:
No learning styles were specifically mentioned, but due to 7 of the 17 students having ADHD,
one can assume that multiple and various teaching methods must be used to assure that all students
have an equal opportunity to learn the material. The lesson plan will incorporate the use of music,
videos, text, objects, and movement to provide a full range of learning methods. Students will also be
sorted into groups that are equally and fairly divided based on sex, learning levels, and race. Students
will learn through vision, audio, touch, and other classmates.
S- State Objectives
Students in my first grade class will understand the importance of the twelve months of the year
and will recite the months in sequential order with 95% accuracy within two weeks. In addition, my
students will recognize the major holidays and months through interactive learning, rhythmic song, and
movement.
S- Select Methods, Media, and Materials
Methods
The instructor will begin the class by introducing the objectives that the students will complete
by the end of the lesson plan. This will be followed by the playing of songs that are about the months of
the year. The children will learn actions to the songs being played in a playful way to excite and
encourage the need for the knowledge of the months of the year. The students will then be given
worksheets on this topic and also on the holidays within them. Videos and clips will be chosen that will
also reinforce the knowledge of the months and help the students visually see and associate the months
with particular celebrations and weather. Lastly, the students will be sorted into groups where they can
discuss what their families do at certain times of the year. Within these groups, the students will also be
given materials to create posters for an assigned month.
Media
The instructor will use the white board to introduce the months of the year to the students. The
students will be listening to songs that will be played on the classroom stereo. The students will be given
worksheets that the teacher will hand out. Videos and clips that are shown will be played on the
classroom television and also through a projector that is connected to a computer. The teacher will
supply the art supplies for the posters and will hang them on the walls to present.

U- Utilize Media and Materials
Preview the Materials
All videos and songs that will be played in class have been thoroughly analyzed and approved;
no harmful or inappropriate material is present in any part of the presentation. All motions and dance
are simple and are capable for all students. The groups that are sorted have no potential accusation of
discrimination or favor.
Prepare the Materials
All CDs and cassettes being used are placed in the stereo and play without corruption. All
worksheets have been placed on the students’ desks. The video was placed in the DVD player and the
television plays it successfully. The markers, construction paper, and other materials used for the
posters have been set up and organized; each group has exactly the same amount of supplies.
Prepare the Environment
The desks have been moved and divided for the group projects that come later in the lesson
plan. The lights have been turned on for adequate vision. The temperature of the classroom is
appropriate, and the classroom has been cleaned.
Prepare the Learners
The instructor will introduce the objective to the students and inform them of the activities that
will be taking place. The teacher will use enthusiasm to draw the students in and to motivate them to
learn by showing excitement for the months of the year. The instructor will briefly discuss the
instructions of each activity as the students move on to the next.
R- Require Learner Participation
Students will engage in dance and song to excite the children and motivate their will to learn.
Students will talk amongst one another and work together to create their posters and share information
on what they do during certain months of the year. The groups of children are relatively young in age
and need guidance in conversation. The instructor will move from group to group leading the
conversations and discussions. The groups will show the rest of the class their posters and will be
involved in hanging up their hard work.
E- Evaluate and Revise
The students will be evaluated in multiple ways that will meet all the learning styles. Students
will be asked to repeat the months of the year in sequential order; students may sing the song and do
the dance to help themselves recite the months correctly. They will be evaluated on knowing all 12
months and also on the accuracy of sequential order. Other oral tests would include the instructor
stating a month in which the student would reply with the month that comes after. Students will also be
evaluated through worksheets similar to the ones already completed in class.
Students will share their thoughts on the lesson aloud in class. The instructor will lead the
discussion and ask question similar to “What was your least favorite part of the lesson?” or “What was
your favorite?” The students will also be questioned on what they learned from their peers. The results
will influence what the instructor should continue to do in later years or what should be added.

  • 1. Carly Cooper CI 350 A.S.S.U.R.E. Lesson Plan Assignment: Using the A.S.S.U.R.E. model, design a lesson plan that teaches the months of the year to a Special Ed. 1st grade class. There are 10 boys and 7 girls; 7 students have mild to severe ADHD. 70% of the students are white, 20% African-American, and 10% Hispanic. A- Analyze Learners General Characteristics: The class consists of 17 students: 10 boys and 7 girls. Seven members of the class are diagnosed to have mild to severe ADHD, and the class is categorized as Special Education. 70% of the students are white, 20% African-American, and 10% Hispanic. The age range is not given, but the average 1 st grade age ranges from 6 to 7 years old. Specific Entry Competencies: 1st grade students have graduated past the kindergarten level and should have a basic understanding of number and letter recognition. No information regarding the school, location, students’ families, and use of technology was given. One can assume that the students are familiar with art supplies, videos, music, and computers to an extent; students are not required to have complete mastery of each. Learning Styles: No learning styles were specifically mentioned, but due to 7 of the 17 students having ADHD, one can assume that multiple and various teaching methods must be used to assure that all students have an equal opportunity to learn the material. The lesson plan will incorporate the use of music, videos, text, objects, and movement to provide a full range of learning methods. Students will also be sorted into groups that are equally and fairly divided based on sex, learning levels, and race. Students will learn through vision, audio, touch, and other classmates. S- State Objectives Students in my first grade class will understand the importance of the twelve months of the year and will recite the months in sequential order with 95% accuracy within two weeks. In addition, my students will recognize the major holidays and months through interactive learning, rhythmic song, and movement. S- Select Methods, Media, and Materials Methods
  • 2. The instructor will begin the class by introducing the objectives that the students will complete by the end of the lesson plan. This will be followed by the playing of songs that are about the months of the year. The children will learn actions to the songs being played in a playful way to excite and encourage the need for the knowledge of the months of the year. The students will then be given worksheets on this topic and also on the holidays within them. Videos and clips will be chosen that will also reinforce the knowledge of the months and help the students visually see and associate the months with particular celebrations and weather. Lastly, the students will be sorted into groups where they can discuss what their families do at certain times of the year. Within these groups, the students will also be given materials to create posters for an assigned month. Media The instructor will use the white board to introduce the months of the year to the students. The students will be listening to songs that will be played on the classroom stereo. The students will be given worksheets that the teacher will hand out. Videos and clips that are shown will be played on the classroom television and also through a projector that is connected to a computer. The teacher will supply the art supplies for the posters and will hang them on the walls to present. • 3. All videos and songs that will be played in class have been thoroughly analyzed and approved; no harmful or inappropriate material is present in any part of the presentation. All motions and dance are simple and are capable for all students. The groups that are sorted have no potential accusation of discrimination or favor. Prepare the Materials All CDs and cassettes being used are placed in the stereo and play without corruption. All worksheets have been placed on the students’ desks. The video was placed in the DVD player and the television plays it successfully. The markers, construction paper, and other materials used for the posters have been set up and organized; each group has exactly the same amount of supplies. Prepare the Environment The desks have been moved and divided for the group projects that come later in the lesson plan. The lights have been turned on for adequate vision. The temperature of the classroom is appropriate, and the classroom has been cleaned. Prepare the Learners The instructor will introduce the objective to the students and inform them of the activities that will be taking place. The teacher will use enthusiasm to draw the students in and to motivate them to learn by showing excitement for the months of the year. The instructor will briefly discuss the instructions of each activity as the students move on to the next. R- Require Learner Participation Students will engage in dance and song to excite the children and motivate their will to learn. Students will talk amongst one another and work together to create their posters and share information on what they do during certain months of the year. The groups of children are relatively young in age and need guidance in conversation. The instructor will move from group to group leading the conversations and discussions. The groups will show the rest of the class their posters and will be involved in hanging up their hard work. E- Evaluate and Revise The students will be evaluated in multiple ways that will meet all the learning styles. Students will be asked to repeat the months of the year in sequential order; students may sing the song and do the dance to help themselves recite the months correctly. They will be evaluated on knowing all 12 months and also on the accuracy of sequential order. Other oral tests would include the instructor stating a month in which the student would reply with the month that comes after. Students will also be evaluated through worksheets similar to the ones already completed in class. Students will share their thoughts on the lesson aloud in class. The instructor will lead the discussion and ask question similar to “What was your least favorite part of the lesson?” or “What was
  • 4. your favorite?” The students will also be questioned on what they learned from their peers. The results will influence what the instructor should continue to do in later years or what should be added.
