Building trusted advisor relationships - John Wilhelm

I’m catching up with John Wilhelm, who has been working with the leadership team at Dinte to transform their business. His background in business strategy consulting, combined with Dinte’s extensive track-record in executive search, makes for a unique and valuable proposition to clients who think longterm.

John believes that the added value resides in delivering strategic human capital advice to their clients. By focusing on the big picture, Dinte goes far beyond filling an open job position.

Can you explain how you build and maintain relationships with clients?

  2. 2. One of our strongest points is the blend we create between strategy consulting and executive search. In both areas, everything we do, is focused on being a trusted advisor for our clients. The way we see the creation and building of relationships is very similar, from both perspectives. We start with credibility, demonstrating it and building it; then, we get an opportunity to demonstrate our capabilities with a trial project; that trial project involves into multiple projects; and then the client sees you as a partner who can provide unique value to meet a specific need. As great relationships continue to grow, you can achieve trusted advisor status, which is what we're looking for. We don’t only want to come to our clients when they have a specific human capital need, but also when they have another strategic business challenges and need someone who understands their business at a deep level, to help them think through those challenges.
  3. 3. Can you give some examples of how you actually integrate business strategy into the human capital strategy? We talk with our clients about their goals, about their business strategy as well as their human capital strategy. When providing perspectives to our clients, we use insights that we obtain from the vast number of conversations that we have with people in the marketplace including both candidates and other clients. We are able to build on the understanding of th marketplaces in which they operate as well as dig deeper into specific trends. Recently, we've done a lot of projects where we use the learnings from what we've done on the strategy side and implement it into the human capital element to make sure that the candidates we are finding better map to our clients' goals for their businesses as well as their culture. As an example, we are working on a project now that looks at ‘business development transformation’ for a multi-billion dollar unit of one of our core clients. Even before we start to hire people, we examine how we can take some of the best ideas that are out there in the marketplace about how other companies are winning in the market space and how they're gaining customer intimacy through a very different model of going to market. That strategic look at organization design, go-to-market models and transformative executives has helped our client gain a clear picture of their future structure and the people that they want to fill key roles. In short, one of our pillars is that we research and extrapolate insights and use these to educate our clients on what's going on in the market. That helps them to decide on what their overall strategic decision-making is going to be and what the human capital impact is.
