8. M2M Health Systems
M2M health systems can be useful for early detection of acute conditions and
for prevention of deterioration
For example, vital sign monitoring, such as blood glucose or heart ECG for
homebound patients
They can monitor not only physiological parameters but also environmental
conditions, such as humidity, temperature
M2M Health systems can be part of a smart garment or worn as an accessory
Sensors can be embedded and/or external
Patient is usually connected to a medical monitoring center
Communication links include fixed phone lines, Internet or cellular connection

Benefits of M2M Health
Doctors are scarce and their time is valuable
Telemedicine can allow doctors to see more patients within given time
M2M tracking systems can watch patient’s location and conditions
Monitoring can automatically alert a doctor or healthcare facility when
necessary
Portable, wearable and even implantable sensors can monitor vital signs and
provide the data to healthcare providers
Real-time information can mean the difference between life and death in
many situations
Telemedicine helps reduce the high costs of serious diseases and improve
quality of life

M2M Health is Driven by Consumers, not Patients
The majority of M2M connected healthcare devices will be consumer-oriented
applications
However, the majority of revenues will come from the non-consumer segment, due to
the significantly higher average cost of such devices
More than 50 million wireless health monitoring devices will ship for consumer
monitoring applications during the next five years, with a smaller number for managed
telehealth systems
Consumers want to be able to monitor and manage their own health at home
Medical devices bought by consumers to self-monitor their health will account for
more than 80% of all wireless medical devices in 2016
Increasing availability of home sensors (such as blood pressure monitors) to track and
upload information in real time via a wireless or wired connection

Use Case (1): ECG Monitoring at Home
Source: Global Industry Analytics (GBI)
ECG monitoring is growing in demand due to:
the rise of the aging population,
increasing incidence of cardiovascular diseases
growing number of people receiving home care
demonstrated costs/benefits
18. 18
Remote ECG Monitoring – The Benefits
Reduced hospital admissions by 30%
Reduce death rates by 45%
Peace of mind for high-risk patients
High satisfaction rate by users and medical professionals
Significant cost savings:
UK NHS study (2007) found that return on investment is 3.5 months(!)
19. Use Case (2): Chronic Disease Management
200 million patients in the EU and the US suffer from chronic diseases
This will increase dramatically by 10%-20% over the next 10 years
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) chronic diseases are the
leading cause of mortality, representing 60% of all deaths
Prevention programs can provide valuable information, eliminate risks and enable
effective decision making and timely intervention
Insurance companies try to lower their expanses and reduce hospital admissions
The result: Significant growth in home monitoring of chronic diseases
The enabler: M2M

Case Study: “The Do-It-Yourself House Call”
Remote-Monitoring Technology Leads Heart Patients to Take Their Readings at Home
From the Wall Street Journal, July 27, 2010 (click to read full article)
Ms. Brown's blood-pressure reading and
transmission devices.
'I was constantly going to the doctor,' said
Carolyn Brown of the Bronx, N.Y. 'Now they
can tell right away if I am in trouble.'

Demonstrated Benefits
Detect changes and intervene before the patient has to be hospitalized
Instead of constantly going to the doctor, the monitoring service can detect
immediately if the patient has a problem
Faster evaluation of suspected heart failures
30% reduction in hospitalization for heart-failure patients
Cost savings: $6,300 for a Medicaid heart patient's typical hospital stay vs. a
$626 wireless monitoring system (10:1 ratio)

Are M2M Health Applications Going to Replace Doctors?
The use of M2M technologies can automate many tasks
It overcomes distances and saves valuable time and costs
However, professionals still need to review and analyze the data and take
informed decision
Currently M2M health applications are still limited to M2H (H=Doctor)
Doctors also play an important role in promoting and specifying M2M health
systems
Therefore, we believe the doctors will continue to play an important role and
will remain part of the equation for many years to come
