CONNECTED URBAN DEVELOPMENT www.cm-lisboa.pt Lisbon’s Energy Environmental Strategy provides the framework for all actions aiming to improve the energy and environmental performance of the city: Lisbon is committed to lead with good practices in planning, construction and infra-structures, management and mobility and will set performance targets for the use of energy, water and materials, in all these sectors. Lisbon aims to become a truly green city, solidarily working with and for present and future generations.

5. CONNECTED URBAN DEVELOPMENT www.cm-lisboa.pt Portugal is one of Europe’s states with the lowest CO 2 emissions per capita and highest energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product (GDP). Trends show an increase in energy consumption as quality of life patterns improve. The Lisbon Energy Matrix shows us that buildings are the largest contributor to energy consumption, closely followed by transport . CONNECTED URBAN DEVELOPMENT www.cm-lisboa.pt The Lisbon Water Matrix shows us that the domestic sector is the largest contributor to drinking water consumption and therefore responsible for shrinking this valuable resource in Lisbon. It also shows us that the Municipality, Commerce and Industry don’t require drinking water for their uses, resulting in a potential new demand for recycled water of 31% of the city’s current water demand. 7. CONNECTED URBAN DEVELOPMENT www.cm-lisboa.pt THE BUILDING SECTOR ACCOUNTS FOR 64% OF MATERIALS DEMAND The built environment is a stable environmental resource and materials source. The Lisbon Materials Matrix shows us that the building sector is the largest contributor to materials consumption. It also shows us that the Municipality, responsible for urban management, has ample scope to mainstream good practices of life cycle management of materials, especially regarding end-of-life products.
