Lee Rainie, Director of the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project, will discuss the Project’s latest research about how people use technology and how people use libraries. He will discuss the implications of this work for libraries. As librarians, we communicate with our users, staff, C-Level, patrons, and each other every day with a myriad of technological devices, languages, infographics, styles and tones. Why does it feel like we are all talking at cross-purposes? Whether communicating your value to a VIP or just trying to stay in touch with your multi-generational staff, speaking across cultures, generations and technology platforms while still adhering to the strategic goals of your library and parent organization, can be formidable. This workshop will present a variety of different communication challenges (either generational, intercultural or via technology) and will look at methods to strategically navigate them to get your message across. It will also help you hear and understand the communications and motivations of others more effectively.

Depending on the type of library in which you work, you may assume that someone is "digitally literate." Yet what do we mean by those words and how do we know if the person meets our definition? What can we do in our libraries to increase the information and digital literacy of our users/patrons/members/owners? How does that impact the tools that we acquire and the services that we provide? Who should we be partnering with in these efforts? These and other questions will be address in this session, which will also include time for brainstorming. Jill Hurst-Wahl is an associate professor of practice in Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies and the director of its library and information science program. She is a member of SLA’s Board of Directors, NYS Regents Advisory Council on Libraries, and the USNY Technology Policy and Practices Council. A former corporate librarian, Jill has always been an advocate for libraries being centers of learning in their communities (no matter what community they serve).

They are the connected nodes of information and community exchange that we have relied on to communicate, collaborate, share resources and preserve knowledge in our societies for centuries. In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
