2. Collections Trust
• Our aim is to help people define and achieve excellence in providing
collection-based services to their users
• People use our standards and guidance to reduce their expenditure,
maintain accountability, mitigate risk, train staff and manage programmes
• Collections have to be part of the answer – as a community, we have to
show how what we do delivers value in a way that users understand and
want it
• We are all about supporting change and innovation – every new vision of
what we can do starts with Collections Management
KE Emu European User Conference – 27th April 2012

15. The challenge
• We need Collections Management Systems to work harder to support the
increasingly diverse needs of the museum
• Maximising the use of your online collections means delivering them on your
site and serving them up for use via multiple channels/API
• The purpose of Europeana Inside is to build into your CMS the tools to manage
how your collections are shared, with whom and under what conditions
• Putting the control of re-use in your hands

17. The benefits
• Connecting Collections Management and Collections publishing workflows
• Europeana, Wikipedia, BBC Digital Public Space, Google History
• Maximising the exposure of your online collections
• Limiting the risk through granular rights/permissions management
• Cleaning up your metadata for re-use
• Providing a channel for user-enhanced metadata to flow back to you
• Opening up opportunities for income generation
KE Emu European User Conference – 27th April 2012
18. The next challenge
• Once we have opened up Collections metadata for re-use through multiple
channels, we need a way of tracking metrics & impact
• This is outside the scope of Europeana Inside, but will form the basis of a future
project proposal
• Part of a broader discussion about metrics & KPI for online collections – moving
from quantity to reach and engagement
KE Emu European User Conference – 27th April 2012
19. European Funding
• European funding presents a huge opportunity for UK museums wanting to
make more active use of their Collections
• As long as you aren’t the coordinator, participating in European-funded projects
is simple
• Participating opens up new networks & partnerships
• The European Commission is currently evaluating the possibility of diverting €m
into enabling Digitisation in European museums
• We need to increase participation in EU funding by UK institutions
