Colombus Project
Carmeuse	is	developing	an	innovative	process	which	
concentrates	the	CO2	stream,	while	ENGIE	will	use	renewable	
energy	to	feed	a	75	MW	electrolyzer	stack,	built	by	John	
Cockerill,	to	produce	green	hydrogen.	This	is	then	combined	
with	the	CO2	from	the	lime	kiln	to	produce	e-methane.

Hayrport Project
On	the	airport	site,	it	can	be	used	in	different	ways,	
particularly	through	hydrogen	distribution	stations

EU27+UK NECPs were analyzed on the national opportunities for hydrogen deployment.

In EU27+UK by 2030 depending on the scenario, 13-56 GW of electrolysers (4800Hrs full load) are needed
reducing 20-67MtCO2/a, creating 7.5-29 bn € added value and 104k-358k jobs.
Belgium can contribute by (high scenario) : 2.3 GW electrolysers, 1.14b € added value and nearly 11.000 jobs.

Demonstrate the system in a bi-mode train to be homologated in three MS
• Start date: 01/01/2021
• Total cost: 13,341,609.93 €
• Grant amount: 10,000,000.00 €
• Main Objective:
• Develop, build, test, demonstrate and homologate a scalable, modular and multi-
purpose Fuel Cell Hybrid PowerPack (FCHPP) applicable for different rail applications
(multiple unit, mainline and shunting locomotives) also suitable to for retrofit existing
electric and diesel trains, to reach TRL7.
• The train demonstrator tests to be carried out cross-border in Portugal and Spain and
homologation to be sought for three EU countries.

Background
• Residential sectors correspond to
a considerable parcel of the global
greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
• In 2019, the total GHG emissions in
Belgium, from residential heating,
corresponded to 13,8%1, and
represented 40% of the total
energy consumption in Europe.2
• The total energy consumption in
Belgium should be reduced by 35%
until 2030.
• Fuel cells have then an important
role on the process of GHG
emissions.

• LOOPFC project approaches the
use of a Proton Exchange
Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) for
electricity and heat transfer in a
micro-cogeneration system for
residential buildings.
• The three main points connected to
the project in terms of heat
recovery are: energy efficiency,
lifetime and cost of the fuel cell.

• The global objective of the project
is to develop a coupled system
with spreader and two-phase
capillary pipe loop (CPL) in a
PEMFC aiming the reduction of the
heat loss and its use in a grid
power.

– Role in the project: set-up of

• Calyos is responsible for the design
of the passive cooling of a 10.5 kW
Hydrogen Fuel Cell Power Module.
• The purpose of the LHP is to
minimize the heat losses in the fuel
cell, improving, therefore, its
thermal efficiency.

• Experimental assessment of the
global efficiency of the fuel cell.
– Temperature measurement
– Heat flux measurement
– Addition of a capillary pump loop
to improve heat recovery
– Campaign to start in
summer/autumn 2021

– Role: water cooling system of
the fuel cell stack.
– Constituted by the fuel cell, flow
meter, heat exchanger and the

– Status: concluded and ready to
be used.

to ongoing work on H2 lines,
which is expected to be
concluded by the end of

Main remarks and perspectives
• This presentation has shown the
role of fuel cell technology on the
reduction process of GHG-
emissions.
• Some projects on the field of H2
applications in energy production
were here introduced, among them
LOOPFC, a Walloon project, was
then discussed.
• Despite some delays over the
project due to the pandemic
situation, experimental tests and
simulation of the fuel cell in a grid-
power system are expected to
happen by the end of the year.
• Perspectives:
– thermal managements in
buildings,
– increase of the lifetime of
stationary fuel cells with the
use of a heat recovery system,
– improvement of cogeneration
system efficiency.

PROD-F-015-02 Main remarks and perspectives • This presentation has shown the role of fuel cell technology on the reduction process of GHG- emissions. • Some projects on the field of H2 applications in energy production were here introduced, among them LOOPFC, a Walloon project, was then discussed. • Despite some delays over the project due to the pandemic situation, experimental tests and simulation of the fuel cell in a grid- power system are expected to happen by the end of the year. • Perspectives: – thermal managements in buildings, – increase of the lifetime of stationary fuel cells with the use of a heat recovery system, – improvement of cogeneration system efficiency.
