’Handling of sewage within the merchant shipping’
- Based on survey answers from ships and interviews with
involved parties.
- No tests onboard, but more or less the same conclusion!
- A lack of standardised data for dimensioning of STP and
sampling.
- IACS / PSC surveyors don’t know how to take samples on the
effluent water!
- A considerable amount of the STP on board participating ships
were found to be under-dimensioned.
- A few of the participants has STP installed which are in direct
conflict with the applicable regulations!

When garbage is mixed with or contaminated by other substances prohibited from discharge or
having different discharge requirements, the more stringent requirements shall apply.
1.
Distance from the ‘nearest land’ and discharge while the ship is en route.
2.
Distance from the ‘nearest land’ or the ‘nearest ice shelf’ and discharge while the ship is en route.
3.
Discharge of introduced avian products in the Antarctic area is not permitted unless it has been treated to be made sterile.
4.
Discharge as far as practicable from areas of ice concentration exceeding 1/10.
5.
Distance from the ‘nearest land’, ‘nearest ice-shelf’, or ‘nearest fast ice’ while the ship is en route.
6.
Food wastes shall not be discharged onto the ice.
7.
Classified as not harmful to the marine environment.
8.
Discharge only allowed if: (a) Both the port of departure and the next port of destination are within the special area and the ship will
not transit outside the special area between those ports; and (b) No adequate reception facilities are available at those ports.
