WHY FINANCIAL LITERACY MATTERS
The reality is there is no link between what you earn and how well you manage your money.
That is good news for everybody. It simply means that regardless of our earning levels, we
can all learn good money management habits and we can all aspire to a good level of
financial security. Indeed, we can do more than just aspire; we can actually do something to
achieve that financial security during our lifetimes.

SAVINGS
DEFINITIONS: Savings is the money, earnings put by for future use.
WHY DO YOU NEED TO SAVE?
๏ƒ˜ We save to improve the quality of our lives in the future, and achieve some of our
dreams
๏ƒ˜ We need to save for disasters and emergencies
One has to think about tomorrow and get out of the habit of spending on everything.
Therefore even if you are not getting enough, try to get into a lifelong habit of saving.
It is best to notice that you are never too young to start saving. The earlier you start the better.
It is important to start developing a savings and budget now. This is the first milestone
towards taking control of your future.
HOW MUCH SHOULD YOU SAVE?
๏ƒ˜ The answer is simple; you should save AS MUCH AS YOU CAN AFFORD.
Your future is not certain, and the more you stock up now, the better is your future. It is better
to start earlier rather than later and with smaller amount rather than not at all. You can always
increase the amount later, when you can afford more.
WHERE CAN I SAVE MY MONEY?
It is quiet firm deciding where to save. Conversely there are thousands of possibilities, with
different degrees of risk. When you start saving, you want to make sure your money is safe
and earns a good interest. Some investments go up in value very quickly, but can also just as
easily lose a lot of their value these are called โ€œhigh riskโ€ investments. Until your savings
plans are well under way, it is best to steer clear of them. Remember the saying, โ€œif it sounds
too good to be true โ€“ it probably it is.โ€
Many people have been cheated out of savings by promises of doubling their money quickly.
It is easy to be tempted by promises of getting rich, but in reality, people investing in โ€œget
rich quickโ€ schemes lose their money fast.
If you start to save, start by putting your money into safe investments such as those offered
by the banks or post office once you have got into the savings habit, you can look at other
investments.
GOOD WAYS TO START SAVING YOUR MONEY?
Notice Deposits
You can invest your money at the bank or post office at a better rate of interest if you
take out a notice deposit.
Depending on the terms of the account, you will have to give the bank the required
period of notice, usually 32 or 60 days, I you will want to withdraw your savings.
It is useful for saving a lump sum that you need in the future.
Fixed deposits
Once o have accumulated a certain amount of savings, you might want to invest a
lump sum at a higher rate of interest with your bank or the post office.
This simply means that your savings will grow more than in a saving account, but you
will not be able to withdraw it for a fixed period of time, e.g. 6 months, or 1 year,
depending on the agreed terms with your bank or post office.
A safe way for saving for the medium to longer term
Government Bonds
Bonds are safe, risk free way to save money for the medium term. They are fixed-
term investments with a fixed interest rate, as decided on the day you purchase the
bond. The Namibian government issues bonds for different periods โ€“ 2 years, 3 years
and 5 years. They are easy to buy, provided that you are a Namibian citizen and they
usually require a minimum investment of N$ 1 000. Details can be obtained from the
Bank of Namibia.
You can withdraw your money before maturity date, but you will have to pay a
penalty, so try not to do it.
Good medium-term investments
Retirement Annuities (RAs)
The are two ways to save for retirement. If your employer has a pension or provident
fund, you will probably be forced to join it. If not, a good option is to take out a
retirement annuity policy with an insurance company. This is a contract where you
pay an amount each month into RA, and the insurance company invests it wisely and
makes it grow for you. On retirement โ€“ usually at ages 55 or 60 โ€“ you will get paid
out a monthly pension for the rest of your life. (You will also be able to take a lump
sum of 1/3 of the savings amount on retirement โ€“ tax free)
The Namibia government encourages this type of saving and will give you tax
deduction on your monthly deductions.
Remember, you cannot withdraw any money from this type of savings until age 55 or
60, making it good way to save for your old age.
Make sure you will fully understand the conditions of the RA before signing one.
Unit Trust
Unit Trust is a way to buy shares and bonds, without knowing too much about the
stock market. You money is pooled with other peopleโ€™s money, and it is used to buy
and sell shares and bonds. The value of unit trusts should increase over time as
interest and profit from the shares are added.
Unit trust growth is not guaranteed, and could even decrease in value, if the shares t
bought is not doing well, or the stock market โ€œcrashesโ€. Unit trust savings must be a
longer term investment, where you are prepared to leave the money to smooth out the
โ€œhighs and lowsโ€™ of the stock market.
A unit trust is very flexible and you can change your savings amount any time. You
can change you can also sell your unit trusts whenever you want, although the costs of
selling and buying must be considered. There are many unit trusts to choose from, and
you need to consult an adviser to decide what type will suit best.
Endowment Policies
One way to save for a specific goal like a car, education or a deposit on a house is to
take out an endowment policy with an insurance company. The policy will be for a
fixed period, e.g. 5, 10 or more years. You pay an amount into this policy every
month for the whole term, and at the end of the period, you will be paid a lump sum.
This is a legal binding contract where you will pay commission to the broker who
sells you the policy.
There will be heavy penalties if you stop the policy before the end of its term.
However, your savings will probably grow by higher amount than in a normal savings
or interest bearing account, although this is not guaranteed. This is a slightly higher-
risk investment, but if you are prepared to stick with it for the whole period, it is a
very good disciplined way to save money.
Be warned โ€“ this is a serious commitment! Donโ€™t stop and start, because you will
lose!
Hmmm asi deepa ko mutwe!
Remember this, no matter how much a person
earns, they feel that they donโ€™t earn enough. The
reality is that everyone can save with a bit of
persuasion and commitment. Yeerr! of course, it
means that we need to sacrifice some of our less
important spending, but the welfares in the long
run will be well worth it. Not only will you be
more financial secure, you will also sleep better!
CREATNG FINANCIAL VISSION FOR YOUR LIFE?
Many people financial plans fail because their goals and objectives are vague. It is very
simple for one to have a purpose of why are you saving.
You need to have a vision, something that drives you or inspire you to keep you on track
when times are tough. One has to have a powerful mind-set and visual image of what you
want to achieve.
Having a vision will help you to stick to your plan and achieve your goals. The most
important things that we need to remember is to always aim at things we know we can
achieve. When we are born, we learn how to walk and speak and as we grow up we become
more experienced, we see how tough is life and it is more challenging.
We need to explore o what we want to achieve and we must truly believe in our vision.
Having a vision ad not believing in it will not motivate or inspire you at all. Realistic goals
will encourage you to keep on track.
In order for us to grow and be a success in achieving our goals, we have to find the trusted
people with experience to help us and remind us to keep on track of our future goals.
According to the Human Science Behavioural research it has been proven that if you have
support for your goals, you much more likely to achieve them. Ask someone you trust tell
them your commitment and excitement so that they remind you of your goals occasionally.
Once you have short, medium and long-term goals that you want to save for, you must break
them down in more detail. You need to decide what it will take to reach each one.
Hmmm!
Short term: means something
you want to achieve within a
short period of within 2 years.
Medium term: means something
you want to achieve within 3 to
5 years.
Long term: means something
you want to achieve that will
take 5 to 30 years
PREPARING FOR FUTURE IN A FINANCIAL WORLD
At different points in life, we are confronted with new financial decisions and
obligations. We need to plan our life in anticipation of our financial future.
For example should we wish to be in a relationship or marriage around the age of 25
years, we need to save enough money to have a wedding, by family house and start a
family? Therefore, we have to start planning and setting money aside for this long life
stage while we are single.
Most of us do not realize the best time to start planning for different life stages.
Hmmm LIZUVIRAKO!
READ:
๏‚ง Visual goals are more inspiring and
motivate you to do savings plans.
๏‚ง Make your dreams concrete, with as much
detail as possible.
๏‚ง Make research of your goals go deeper in it
and make them more realistic and visual.
๏‚ง Focus and, focus on your goals that are
more important, and balance them
๏‚ง Know that your long-term goals are more
important, but try to balance them all.
๏‚ง Review your goals regularly, especially if
circumstances change.
HOW CAN YOU MAKE YOUR MONEY GROW?
In the secret of saving we have learned about different types of savings and investments
vehicles you could use to grow your wealth.
Just like you pay interest on loans, a financial institution will pay you a reward for investing
our money with them. Financial institutions, like banks, or companies, invest your money, or
lend it out to other customers (subject to strict government rules), at a higher rate of interest
than they would pay you. Either way, their job is to make your money grow โ€“ and your job is
to choose the investments that suit you, and to stick with them.
Therefore if you live your investment for long period of time, the investment not only grows
each year, but grows exponentially. This means that you not earn interest on your initial
investments, but the interest gets added each month or year to the initial amount, and you
earn interest on that interest as well.
This interest is called compound interest, and is the key to long-term growth and wealth.
Hmmm TELELA MANGA!
Be nice, and get real!
Forget the โ€œget rich quickโ€ schemes. Patience
and slow, steady investment is the key to
growing your wealth.
Saving without interest
If you save N$1 000 ach and very year for 10 years, and kept savings under mattress, your
money wouldnโ€™t earn any interest. After 10 years it would be N$1 000 x 10 years = N$10 000
Saving with interest
This sounds a lot of money, but compare to savings with interest. If you had saved it in an
investment that earned 10% interest per year, it would be worth more than N$17 500 after 10
years. This is because the interest is compounded, causing the investment to grow much
faster.
MONEY MATTERS
ARE WE GETTING OUT OF CONTROL
These days we see very little โ€œrealโ€ money or physical cash. Mostly in our township wages are
still paid in cash, but most salaries are transferred directly into our bank accounts electronically at
the end of the month. Debit orders and stop orders often pay for bond repayments, cellphone
accounts, insurance premiums and other monthly expenses automatically. People are using less
cash for these. We can buy anything we want nowadays using ATM debit cards, store cards or
credit cards. Other accounts can be paid from an ATM, via cellphone banking or using the
internet, without any real cash ever changing hands.
It is convenient? Yes, but it makes the money we earn a bit unreal. It is easy to forget that we
spend our money when we donโ€™t see the money. Today money can be spending even when you
donโ€™t have money to spend.
This modern world somehow is making us live in debts more than ever. If you donโ€™t know what is
coming in, and you are not sure what is going out, you will never see where you might be able to
find extra money for savings.
WARNING: it is important we learn to budget and stick to our budget.
CONCLUSION
Today we are facing a big possibility of financial disaster. Our finances are completely out of
control. We need to implement proper financial management mechanism to command us to
be on the right track and understand the secret behind finance management. We need to be
disciplined and start implementing and start financial control now.

Why financial literacy matters

  • 1. WHY FINANCIAL LITERACY MATTERS The reality is there is no link between what you earn and how well you manage your money. That is good news for everybody. It simply means that regardless of our earning levels, we can all learn good money management habits and we can all aspire to a good level of financial security. Indeed, we can do more than just aspire; we can actually do something to achieve that financial security during our lifetimes. • 2. SAVINGS DEFINITIONS: Savings is the money, earnings put by for future use. WHY DO YOU NEED TO SAVE? ๏ƒ˜ We save to improve the quality of our lives in the future, and achieve some of our dreams ๏ƒ˜ We need to save for disasters and emergencies One has to think about tomorrow and get out of the habit of spending on everything. Therefore even if you are not getting enough, try to get into a lifelong habit of saving. It is best to notice that you are never too young to start saving. The earlier you start the better. It is important to start developing a savings and budget now. This is the first milestone towards taking control of your future. HOW MUCH SHOULD YOU SAVE? ๏ƒ˜ The answer is simple; you should save AS MUCH AS YOU CAN AFFORD. Your future is not certain, and the more you stock up now, the better is your future. It is better to start earlier rather than later and with smaller amount rather than not at all. You can always increase the amount later, when you can afford more. WHERE CAN I SAVE MY MONEY? It is quiet firm deciding where to save. Conversely there are thousands of possibilities, with different degrees of risk. When you start saving, you want to make sure your money is safe and earns a good interest. Some investments go up in value very quickly, but can also just as easily lose a lot of their value these are called โ€œhigh riskโ€ investments. Until your savings plans are well under way, it is best to steer clear of them. Remember the saying, โ€œif it sounds too good to be true โ€“ it probably it is.โ€ Many people have been cheated out of savings by promises of doubling their money quickly. It is easy to be tempted by promises of getting rich, but in reality, people investing in โ€œget rich quickโ€ schemes lose their money fast. If you start to save, start by putting your money into safe investments such as those offered by the banks or post office once you have got into the savings habit, you can look at other investments.
  • 3. GOOD WAYS TO START SAVING YOUR MONEY? Notice Deposits You can invest your money at the bank or post office at a better rate of interest if you take out a notice deposit. Depending on the terms of the account, you will have to give the bank the required period of notice, usually 32 or 60 days, I you will want to withdraw your savings. It is useful for saving a lump sum that you need in the future. Fixed deposits Once o have accumulated a certain amount of savings, you might want to invest a lump sum at a higher rate of interest with your bank or the post office. This simply means that your savings will grow more than in a saving account, but you will not be able to withdraw it for a fixed period of time, e.g. 6 months, or 1 year, depending on the agreed terms with your bank or post office. A safe way for saving for the medium to longer term Government Bonds Bonds are safe, risk free way to save money for the medium term. They are fixed- term investments with a fixed interest rate, as decided on the day you purchase the bond. The Namibian government issues bonds for different periods โ€“ 2 years, 3 years and 5 years. They are easy to buy, provided that you are a Namibian citizen and they usually require a minimum investment of N$ 1 000. Details can be obtained from the Bank of Namibia. You can withdraw your money before maturity date, but you will have to pay a penalty, so try not to do it. Good medium-term investments Retirement Annuities (RAs) The are two ways to save for retirement. If your employer has a pension or provident fund, you will probably be forced to join it. If not, a good option is to take out a retirement annuity policy with an insurance company. This is a contract where you pay an amount each month into RA, and the insurance company invests it wisely and makes it grow for you. On retirement โ€“ usually at ages 55 or 60 โ€“ you will get paid out a monthly pension for the rest of your life. (You will also be able to take a lump sum of 1/3 of the savings amount on retirement โ€“ tax free) The Namibia government encourages this type of saving and will give you tax deduction on your monthly deductions. Remember, you cannot withdraw any money from this type of savings until age 55 or 60, making it good way to save for your old age. Make sure you will fully understand the conditions of the RA before signing one.
  • 4. Unit Trust Unit Trust is a way to buy shares and bonds, without knowing too much about the stock market. You money is pooled with other peopleโ€™s money, and it is used to buy and sell shares and bonds. The value of unit trusts should increase over time as interest and profit from the shares are added. Unit trust growth is not guaranteed, and could even decrease in value, if the shares t bought is not doing well, or the stock market โ€œcrashesโ€. Unit trust savings must be a longer term investment, where you are prepared to leave the money to smooth out the โ€œhighs and lowsโ€™ of the stock market. A unit trust is very flexible and you can change your savings amount any time. You can change you can also sell your unit trusts whenever you want, although the costs of selling and buying must be considered. There are many unit trusts to choose from, and you need to consult an adviser to decide what type will suit best. Endowment Policies One way to save for a specific goal like a car, education or a deposit on a house is to take out an endowment policy with an insurance company. The policy will be for a fixed period, e.g. 5, 10 or more years. You pay an amount into this policy every month for the whole term, and at the end of the period, you will be paid a lump sum. This is a legal binding contract where you will pay commission to the broker who sells you the policy. There will be heavy penalties if you stop the policy before the end of its term. However, your savings will probably grow by higher amount than in a normal savings or interest bearing account, although this is not guaranteed. This is a slightly higher- risk investment, but if you are prepared to stick with it for the whole period, it is a very good disciplined way to save money. Be warned โ€“ this is a serious commitment! Donโ€™t stop and start, because you will lose!
  • 5. Hmmm asi deepa ko mutwe! Remember this, no matter how much a person earns, they feel that they donโ€™t earn enough. The reality is that everyone can save with a bit of persuasion and commitment. Yeerr! of course, it means that we need to sacrifice some of our less important spending, but the welfares in the long run will be well worth it. Not only will you be more financial secure, you will also sleep better! CREATNG FINANCIAL VISSION FOR YOUR LIFE? Many people financial plans fail because their goals and objectives are vague. It is very simple for one to have a purpose of why are you saving. You need to have a vision, something that drives you or inspire you to keep you on track when times are tough. One has to have a powerful mind-set and visual image of what you want to achieve. Having a vision will help you to stick to your plan and achieve your goals. The most important things that we need to remember is to always aim at things we know we can achieve. When we are born, we learn how to walk and speak and as we grow up we become more experienced, we see how tough is life and it is more challenging. We need to explore o what we want to achieve and we must truly believe in our vision. Having a vision ad not believing in it will not motivate or inspire you at all. Realistic goals will encourage you to keep on track. In order for us to grow and be a success in achieving our goals, we have to find the trusted people with experience to help us and remind us to keep on track of our future goals. According to the Human Science Behavioural research it has been proven that if you have support for your goals, you much more likely to achieve them. Ask someone you trust tell them your commitment and excitement so that they remind you of your goals occasionally. Once you have short, medium and long-term goals that you want to save for, you must break them down in more detail. You need to decide what it will take to reach each one.
  • 6. Hmmm! Short term: means something you want to achieve within a short period of within 2 years. Medium term: means something you want to achieve within 3 to 5 years. Long term: means something you want to achieve that will take 5 to 30 years PREPARING FOR FUTURE IN A FINANCIAL WORLD At different points in life, we are confronted with new financial decisions and obligations. We need to plan our life in anticipation of our financial future. For example should we wish to be in a relationship or marriage around the age of 25 years, we need to save enough money to have a wedding, by family house and start a family? Therefore, we have to start planning and setting money aside for this long life stage while we are single. Most of us do not realize the best time to start planning for different life stages.
  • 7. Hmmm LIZUVIRAKO! READ: ๏‚ง Visual goals are more inspiring and motivate you to do savings plans. ๏‚ง Make your dreams concrete, with as much detail as possible. ๏‚ง Make research of your goals go deeper in it and make them more realistic and visual. ๏‚ง Focus and, focus on your goals that are more important, and balance them ๏‚ง Know that your long-term goals are more important, but try to balance them all. ๏‚ง Review your goals regularly, especially if circumstances change. HOW CAN YOU MAKE YOUR MONEY GROW? In the secret of saving we have learned about different types of savings and investments vehicles you could use to grow your wealth. Just like you pay interest on loans, a financial institution will pay you a reward for investing our money with them. Financial institutions, like banks, or companies, invest your money, or lend it out to other customers (subject to strict government rules), at a higher rate of interest than they would pay you. Either way, their job is to make your money grow โ€“ and your job is to choose the investments that suit you, and to stick with them.
  • 8. Therefore if you live your investment for long period of time, the investment not only grows each year, but grows exponentially. This means that you not earn interest on your initial investments, but the interest gets added each month or year to the initial amount, and you earn interest on that interest as well. This interest is called compound interest, and is the key to long-term growth and wealth. Hmmm TELELA MANGA! Be nice, and get real! Forget the โ€œget rich quickโ€ schemes. Patience and slow, steady investment is the key to growing your wealth. Saving without interest If you save N$1 000 ach and very year for 10 years, and kept savings under mattress, your money wouldnโ€™t earn any interest. After 10 years it would be N$1 000 x 10 years = N$10 000 Saving with interest This sounds a lot of money, but compare to savings with interest. If you had saved it in an investment that earned 10% interest per year, it would be worth more than N$17 500 after 10 years. This is because the interest is compounded, causing the investment to grow much faster. MONEY MATTERS
  • 9. ARE WE GETTING OUT OF CONTROL These days we see very little โ€œrealโ€ money or physical cash. Mostly in our township wages are still paid in cash, but most salaries are transferred directly into our bank accounts electronically at the end of the month. Debit orders and stop orders often pay for bond repayments, cellphone accounts, insurance premiums and other monthly expenses automatically. People are using less cash for these. We can buy anything we want nowadays using ATM debit cards, store cards or credit cards. Other accounts can be paid from an ATM, via cellphone banking or using the internet, without any real cash ever changing hands. It is convenient? Yes, but it makes the money we earn a bit unreal. It is easy to forget that we spend our money when we donโ€™t see the money. Today money can be spending even when you donโ€™t have money to spend. This modern world somehow is making us live in debts more than ever. If you donโ€™t know what is coming in, and you are not sure what is going out, you will never see where you might be able to find extra money for savings. WARNING: it is important we learn to budget and stick to our budget. CONCLUSION Today we are facing a big possibility of financial disaster. Our finances are completely out of control. We need to implement proper financial management mechanism to command us to be on the right track and understand the secret behind finance management. We need to be disciplined and start implementing and start financial control now.
