  1. 1. Ligament Injuries of Knee www.chennaiorthopaedics.com
  2. 2. WHAT ARE KNEE LIGAMENT INJURIES? Ligaments are tough bands of tissue that connect the bones in your body. There are four ligaments in the  knee  that are prone to injury: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) Lateral collateral ligament (LCL) Medial collateral ligament (MCL) www.chennaiorthopaedics.com
  3. 3. COMMON SIGNS & SYMPTOMS 3 Swelling, feeling of looseness1 Pain, often sudden and severe 4 Inability to put weight on the joint without pain 2 A loud pop or snap during the injury www.chennaiorthopaedics.com
  4. 4. Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) Injury An ACL injury is a tear or sprain of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) — one of the major ligaments in knee. Symptoms Popping sensation Severe pain Rapid swelling Loss of range of motion A feeling of instability Causes Happen during sports and fitness activities that can put stress on the knee, like Suddenly slowing down and changing direction (cutting) Pivoting with your foot firmly planted Landing awkwardly from a jump Stopping suddenly Collision www.chennaiorthopaedics.com
  5. 5. Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) Injury The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) is a ligament within the knee. Injuries that tear the PCL often damage some of the other ligaments or cartilage in the knee. Causes of PCL Injuries Motor accident Falling on the knee while it's bent Sports injuries www.chennaiorthopaedics.com Symptoms Injuries Swelling Knee pain Wobbly sensation Trouble walking
  6. 6. The LCL also known as the Lateral Collateral Ligament is one of the four major ligaments that helps stabilize the knee joint when performing movement with the leg. LATERAL COLLATERAL LIGAMENT (LCL) Typically the LCL is injured when there is direct force on the inside of the knee. This can cause the LCL, ligment to be stretch or torn beyond its normal range of motion. Symptoms are Pain and tenderness along with swelling ,feeling of instability in their knee when walking. www.chennaiorthopaedics.com
  7. 7. Medial collateral ligament (MCL) Injury A medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury is a stretch, partial tear, or complete tear of the ligament on the inside of the knee. CAUSES MCL injuries often happen during contact sports. Direct contact to the outside of the knee during a collision can push the knee sideways. This puts a lot of pressure on the MCL, which can tear. www.chennaiorthopaedics.com
