Modern technique of Ozone Injection in HVAC systems. Age old conventional technique of Plate Type is outdated due to multiple drawbacks. Modern technique used advance technology of return air induced ozone injection outside duct.

8. - Technology
8
• Advance Technology :- Ozonator is Corona discharge type & installed in return air line,
Outside Duct & Ozone is injected through Anti-oxidant tubing
• Conventional Technology :- In conventional technology Plate type ozonator in installed
in Supply air line, within duct
9. - Ozone Generator Installation
9
• Advance Technology :- Ozone Generator is installed in AHU room Outside Duct.
• Conventional Technology :- A Cut Out is made in duct & Plate Type ozone generator is
installed within Supply Air duct.
• Return air has the maximum pollutant, so ideally ozone injection point should be in
return air. Unfortunately Plate type ozonator can not be installed in return air, because
return air has more dust compared to supply air. If plate type ozonators are installed in
return air duct, it Quickly gets covered by dust. Eventually restricting generation of
ozone.
10. - Ozone Generation
10
• Advance Technology :- Does not depend Upon Circulating Air in Duct, Ozone generator
has built in Air Pump to produce ozone.
• Conventional Technology :- It uses in duct circulating Air to Produce Ozone & depends
upon Circulating Air
• Air Flow Quantity & Velocity in duct is designed as per HVAC design standards & not as
per Ozone Generator requirement.
11. - Effect of Fine dust & Colloidal Particulate Matters
11
• Advance Technology :- Ozone generation is installed outside duct & does not have any
effect of pollutant present in ducts.
• Conventional Technology :- It uses in duct circulating Air to Produce Ozone & depends
upon Circulating Air
1. Fine dust & colloidal suspended particulate matter [SPM] gets attracted on ozone
generator plate, due to static electric charge on plates. This dust particle coating on
plates reduces generation of ozone gas.
12. - Effect of Fine dust & Colloidal Particulate Matters
12
2. Also demands more frequent cleaning by completely removing ozone generator from duct.
3. Due to Fine dust & colloidal suspended particulate matter [SPM] getting deposited on
ozone generator plates, eventually reduces the open surface area exposed between two
plates. This open clean area is responsible for generating corona & producing ozone from
induct air. When high voltage is applied to clean plates of plate type ozone generator the
uniform current flows between two plates of ozone generator. This is specified in term of
current per unit area. Now over the period of time when dust gets coated on these plates,
the current through dust reduces. Also relatively open [clean] area current per unit area
increases, above design current, damaging ozone plates beyond repair.
13. - Conclusion
13
1. For Occupant Safety & Efficiency, Ozone Generator should be installed in
Return Air line/duct & Never in Supply Air Line/duct
2. Ozone generator should not be placed inside duct, it should be installed
outside duct.
3. Ozone generator should be concentric cylindrical & should not be plate type.
4. Ozone gas generation quantity should not be as per manufacturers
specification/Test Certificate [TC], generated ozone should be
demonstrated/validated as per procedure prescribed by “International Ozone
Association” [IOA] at site or in factory. This can be tested either by ozone
analyzer or Chemical titration method.
