1. Various mise-en-scene elements combine to create a rebellious,
wayward representation of Cher. One of the elements used to
achieve this is her facial expression. Cher is staring at the
camera with a wide eyed expression and with her fingertips up
to her mouth, as if to say ‘oops!’ The readership is given the
impression that she has misbehaved, much like they might
want to themselves. Her hair, meanwhile is messy and
untamed, like her personality, with one side of her head
shaved, which conjures up thoughts of the kind of anarchy
associated with punk music.
Cher’s pose is actually quite obscure and she twists her body at an unusual angle, which helps to establish the uniqueness
of her personality and to heighten the likeness of Cher to a little child who has done wrong; children often twist their
bodies to escape the trouble they are in with their parents and because they are literally squirming with guilt. It could be
suggested, through Cher’s pose, that she feels the same. Costume is also interesting. Cher wears striped black and white
trousers, which reflects that there are no grey areas in Cher’s personality. A girl of extremes, she is either ‘black’ or
‘white’. Her t-shirt is tight-fitting and hugs her slim physique, showing off a figure that young girls would crave. The T-shirt
is royal blue and fails to complement the striped trousers. The two clash with each other, which represents her crazy
persona.
