  2. 2. Prepositions Disappointed + in Prepositions are the words which relate a noun or a pronoun with other word of the sentence. That other word can be a verb, an adjective, a noun or a pronoun. She​ ​found the keys ​safe​ in the ​almirah. (object of the preposition) She ​put​ the vegetables in the ​refrigerator. (object of the preposition) She overlooked ​the vegetables​ in the​ refrigerator. (object of the preposition) 1. Prepositions are generally used to add more information in the sentences. I bought a necklace​ for​ my niece ​from​ the new market ​in​ noida ​on​ wednesday ​for​ 20k . 2. Prepositions take objective case after them. Among ​the books​ is lying a red rose. (prep.) (object) She was selected in​ the team. (prep.) (object) Across ​the desert​ lies a beautiful river. (prep.) (object) The books were kept on ​the table.   3. 3. 3. Prepositions either take a noun or a pronoun or a gerund after them. If an action follows a preposition than always write that action in gerund (v1 + ing) form. She kept ​on​ ​singing ​that particular song. She is good ​at ​learning ​new things. He is afraid ​of ​returning ​home. They ​like ​reading ​novels. She insisted ​on ​going ​market. 4. We can never use a preposition after another preposition. Types of preposition 1. Simple prepositions Simple prepositions are basically single word prepositions. For eg - On, at, in, from, to , with, by, about, under, of, off, for etc. 2. Compound prepositions The prepositions which are formed by joining two words are known as compound prepositions. For eg.- Outside, beside, among, before, along,inside etc. 3. Phrase prepositions Some phrases are also used as prepositions . For eg.- Due to, because of, ​for the sake of, with reference to etc. 4. Verb prepositions Many verbs are also used as prepositions. For eg.- Regarding, excluding, notwithstanding,pending, provided, respected etc. O ureducation
  4. 4. ​ Verb Transitive verbs ​ ​ ​ ​ Intransitive verbs These always need an object for them. ​ ​These don’t have objects ​ after them. I want chocolates . Birds fly. I - subject Birds - subject Want - verb Fly - verb Chocolates - object No object These do not take prepositions after them. ​ ​These take prepositions ​ after them. Some verbs are both transitive and intransitive depending upon the type of sentence. Do not use prepositions with the following verbs - Reach, enter, access, afford, attack, resemble, pervade, face, penetrate, advise, inform, apprise, criticize, investigate, qualify, control, blame, stress, emphasize, describe, await, comprise, welcome, beg, join, ask, meet etc. She​ criticized​ his behaviour towards her. They ​entered ​the room. I can’t ​afford ​this place. She ​emphasized ​the task again and again. O ureducation
  5. 5. Some of the above mentioned words are noun also. When they are used as noun, we can use preposition with them. The attack ​on ​children in peshawar was criticized by all. (noun) The boy laid much​ stress​ ​on ​the payment. (noun) With the following phrases use gerund (v1+ ing ) and not to infinitives (to + v1) - Look forward to, with a view to, devoted to, in addition to, with an eye to, preferable to, accustomed to, integral to, given to, taken to, prone to, averse to, object to, devoted to etc. I am looking forward to ​meeting ​you. (gerund) She is prone to ​smoking​. (gerund) I prefer dancing to ​listening ​music. (gerund) She is addicted to ​watching ​web series. (gerund) They have objection to ​returning ​paid tickets. (gerund) Taken to = given to = addicted to With some verbs we can even use both infinitives and gerund . O ureducation

To refer some target With daybreak, midnight, noon, sunset, sunrise Use of some specific prepositions Made of​ - physical change in the material The table is​ made of​ wood. The mug and bucket is ​made of​ plastic. Made from​ - chemical change in the material Cheese is​ made from​ milk. Paper is​ made from ​wood. Deal in​ - to buy or sell something ,to trade She​ deals in​ banarasi silk. They ​deal in​ money exchange. Deal with​ - to handle something, to approach something She patiently​ deals with​ his arrogant nature. The article​ deals with ​the need of mohalla clinics. Deal out ​- to assign, divide or distribute something She will​ deal out ​the money of lottery to different hospitals. They will ​deal out​ the clothes to beggars. In time​ - in the given duration of time We reach the examination centre​ in time.
