PRESIDENT
MESSAGE
GOA event was a huge success this year with exceptional
results in terms of content, lead generation and attendance.
Over 10,000 leads were generated by the 200 exhibitors
as well as 7,500 attendees from close to 100 countries
participated in this year’s show in Miami Beach, Florida.
Over 1,200 people also attended GOA’s renowned
educational seminars, offered in both Spanish and English.
The GOA staff is already planning GOA 2017, which will take place February 16-18,
2017, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida at the easily accessed Greater Fort Lauderdale/
Broward County Convention Center as the Miami Beach Convention Center
continues the scheduled renovations through 2017. Next years’ show will bring a
more significant packaging presence, as well as digital printing, digital finishing and
wide format- inkjet components.
The show generated great feedback from exhibitors like Tim Murphy, President,
Printware - “(On the) first day of the show, one of our dealers who use Graphics of
the Americas as a great way to show new technology to their customers - brought
a customer that purchased our iJetColor system before we were able to get coffee.
It’s a testament to GOA that so many people depend on this February event in
Florida. We’ll be back next year with more equipment to sell.”
And Beatrice Drury, Director of Marketing & Communications, Zund America was
also extremely positive - “Zund America is pleased with the results from GOA this
year. Wide Format Print Shop Live! where we collaborated with Caldera, Gilman
Bros, and HP to show a complete print-to-cut workflow, is a great opportunity
for exhibitors and attendees alike. It highlights the importance of evaluating not
just individual components of a digital production workflow, but how easily and
harmoniously they will work together to create an efficient and productive whole-
from prepress to printing and finishing.”
Please make sure you mark your calendar for the PAF Annual Florida Print Awards
on Friday July 29th, 2016 being held at Marriott’s Orlando World Center. The
Conference includes the annual PAF Golf Classic, the Florida Print Awards Cocktail
Party and Banquet and the Industry Appreciation Party sponsored by Mac Papers
in the evening. I look forward to meeting all of you a the event!
“PAF is an association of graphic communications companies that provides programs,
information and services to positively impact the profitability and professional growth of
its members.”

And change it has.
Rex 3 (formerly Rex
Engraving) began as
an engraving company
before moving into
color separation
to meet customer
demand. The company
started by creating
wet proofs for clients,
but when it realized
there was enough
downtime to generate
more revenue from
presswork, it began to
make its way into commercial printing.
However, it wasn’t long before desktop
publishing broke onto the scene and
began to disrupt the niche many printers
had carved out for themselves. By the
1980s, Julius Miller and his team knew
that they needed to expand offerings or
be pushed out by the rise of the everyday
printer. Desktop publishing allowed
anyone with a desktop scanner, the right
design programs and a printer to create
their own color separations.
That was when Rex 3 started to
become a full-service printing company.
The company added warehousing,
fulfillment distribution, mailing, digital
asset management and expanded its
packaging capabilities — today the
business is comprised of approximately
32 percent commercial printing and 30
percent packaging, with the remainder
going to a variety of other services.
As the industry continued to evolve
throughout the 1990s and into the 2000s,
Rex 3 began to hire software developers
to offer its clients a workflow efficiency
solution.
Most of us would consider ourselves
lucky to hold the same job for 30 or
40 years, but Julius Miller, founder
of Sunrise, Florida-based Rex 3, is
approaching six decades with the
company. At 94 years old, Miller says that
it is his passion for Rex 3, knowledge of
the industry and his flair for sales that
have kept him loyal to the family-run
company he has led since the 1950s.
Julius Miller’s son Steve took over as
CEO in 1963 — a position he still holds
today — but many of the Millers’ friends
and family have been with the company
for more than 25 years. Which, as the
elder Miller says, is the reason the
company has been able to survive in
such a dynamic industry, and it is one
of the things that makes him the most
proud.
But as any printer can attest to, passion,
loyalty and a knowledge of the printing
industry aren’t always enough to keep
a business afloat; encouraging an
evolutionary environment is key.
“It’s our ability to adapt to change,” says
Howard Shusterman, chief operating
officer of Rex 3, and Julius Miller’s
nephew.
REX 3 CELEBRATES
60 YEARS
Julius Miller began Rex 3 nearly 60 years ago, and at 94 years old,
he’s still inspiring the family-run organization to strive for the best.
“We hired software developers to
improve workflow efficiencies for existing
customers,” Shusterman explains. “If
we did not do what we did, we would
probably not be in business today.
We were very aggressive in trying to
capitalize on developing software.”
In 2009, one of the biggest opportunities
came from Topps, the iconic sports
trading card company. The company
was still producing its trading cards in
a traditional way — with an operator
controlling and overseeing every step
of the workflow on the press — so Rex
3 developed software to automate the
production of Topps’ cards to increase
efficiency.
Around the same time, Rex 3 also
entered into an agreement with the Royal
Caribbean cruise line. The company
inked a deal to produce all of the
printed products for the cruise line’s
hotel operations and created software
to integrate the cruise line’s inventory
into its purchasing systems. Rex 3 also
automated the inventory ordering for
29 ships worldwide, across seven ship
classes — which included 264 different
printed products used aboard the ships
— by developing automated triggers to
reprint materials based on usage.
Although Rex 3 has seen continued
growth throughout the past decade,
it doesn’t see itself slowing down in
the future. If there’s one thing that is
for certain, it’s that the company will
continue to rely on the loyalty and
dedication of its 200 employees.
“It’s about the people; probably 50
percent have been with the company for
more than 25 years,” Shusterman says.
“We have lifers here and our success
is attributed to the dedication and the
support that we get from our employees.”
As for Julius Miller — an avid golfer and
amateur singer who was on the radio
as a child — he is excited to see what
the future holds for Rex 3 in terms of
technological advancements, as he
plans on being with the company for the
rest of his life. He is most proud of the
employees who have helped to build a
tight-knit community, which the 94-year-
old business owner has led through
his positive outlook on the company
and development of its environment of
success.
Rex 3 founder,
Julius Miller,
doesn’t let
age stand in
his way. At
94 years old,
he still goes
into the office
every day.

While many of the industry pundits say
that packaging and functional printing are
the top areas of potential growth for the
printing industry, it is not realistic to think
that the average printing company will
be able to, or even desire to, retool to get
into those kinds of new markets. If you
have built your business around being
a “marketing services provider” then it
makes sense to look at how marketers
and advertisers are spending their dollars
for a better indication of what you can do
to serve their needs and potentially grow
your business.
It will probably come as no surprise
that many studies show marketers
and advertisers are increasing their
use of digital media. Respected media
research firm Winterberry Group predicts
marketing spending to grow overall in
2016, thanks in part to the Olympics
and it being a major election year, but
the bulk of that growth will be in digital
media. Winterberry predicts spending
on all data-driven channels to increase
6.4% and display advertising (desktop
and mobile) to show the largest growth,
increasing over 20%. Web search and
email will also grow, and in one bright
spot for print, direct mail is expect to
grow, albeit at a modest .4%. Other
studies show similar results; we cannot
ignore the fact that digital is the preferred
media today.
How do we make lemonade out of these
lemons? By offering “integrated print”
services that take advantage of, pair
with, or enhance digital media! Here are
a few print + digital mash-up ideas that
demonstrate the best of both worlds:
Social media centered photo books.
Over 3.4 billion of the world’s 7.4 billion
people use the Internet and 2.3 billion
of those are active social media users
(65% of Americans use the Internet and
76% of those are active on social media.)
Facebook and Instagram, two of the top
five social media platforms, have become
the place where many people share their
photos with family and friends. While the
photobook market is large and growing
(as 1.4b industry globally) it hasn’t grown
as expected, some speculate because
many consumers find it difficult to
navigate the sites.
Companies like GrooveBook, Chatbooks
and Social Print Studio have stepped in
to fill that gap and make it easy to create
photobooks directly from their phones
or social media sites. GrooveBook,
recently purchased by Shutterfly, is one
such example, offering a $2.99 monthly
subscription service that lets users select
40-100 images from their phone to be
included in a monthly photobook that
is mailed to them. Chatbooks charges
$8 for printed photobooks users create
from their Instagram account and Social
Print Studio offers a wide range of
products based on mobile phone images,
from books and mugs, to posters and
panoramic prints on metal.
While QR codes are the most
recognizable of the print to digital linking
tools, it really hasn’t taken off in the U.S.
as it has in other countries, like China,
where it is build into the top social
media platform, WeChat. NFC (near field
communication) technology is proximity
based, allowing two way communication
between a person with a mobile device
(except Apple devices) and an NFC tag.
Some examples of how NFC can be used
is by putting tags on posters that allow
users to grab digital coupons, download
music or get directions. It is very easy
to program and read NFC tags through
mobile apps and starter kits can be had
for less than $25. Arjowiggins Creative
Papers (http://powercoatpaper.com)
introduced Powercoat® Alive, the first
NFC enabled paper removing the need
for stickers to carry the NFC marker in a
printed piece!
Although the first vertigo-inducing virtual
reality games showed up in arcades over
20 years ago, the technology didn’t take
off. This year that is about to change
with consumer level V/R devices finally
coming to the consumer market. Oculus
Rift, Sony, Samsung, Zeiss and dozens of
other companies now offer virtual reality
headsets for gaming and this is going to
drive interest in the similar technology,
augmented reality.
Augmented reality, a technology where
a virtual image overlays a user’s view
of the real world, is already used by
advertisers to add life to printed material,
particularly in publications and catalogs
(IKEA has incorporated A/R images
and movies in its catalogs since 2013.)
Augmented reality triggers are relatively
easy to incorporate in printed material
with relatively inexpensive cost-of-
entry. Print friendly software includes
documobiFUSE (www.documobi.com),
Layar (www.layar.com), Blippar (blippar.
com) and HP Aurasma (www.aurasma.
com).
To get started with linking services, do
a self-promotion piece to show off your
integrated print shops to your existing
customer base–all of the vendors in the
space share plenty of ideas and case
studies on their respective websites
to give you some great tips for getting
started.
When it comes to marketers preference
for digital, it comes down to, “If you can’t
beat ‘em, join ‘em.” Developing ways to
integrate print with digital media is one
way to turn a competing media into a
complementary tool.

“(On the) first day of the show,
one of our dealers who use
Graphics of the Americas
as a great way to show new
technology to their customers
– brought a customer that
purchased our iJetColor system
before we were able to get
coffee. It’s a testament to GOA
that so many people depend on
this February event in Florida.
We’ll be back next year with more
equipment to sell.”
Tim Murphy
President, Printware
“This was my 12th year exhibiting
at GOA, and I am always amazed
at how many international dealers
and printers attend this show.
I really love this show—the
location, cultures and attendees
create a magic that is uniquely
successful.”
Daniel Rizika,
President, PrintGuard
“Zund America is pleased
with the results from GOA this
year. Wide Format Print Shop
Live!, where we collaborated
with Caldera, Gilman Bros,
and HP to show a complete
print-to-cut workflow, is a great
opportunity for exhibitors and
attendees alike. It highlights the
importance of evaluating not
just individual components of a
digital production workflow, but
how easily and harmoniously they
will work together to create an
efficient and productive whole—
from prepress to printing and
finishing.”
Beatrice Drury
Director of Marketing &
Communications, Zund
America
“Our booth at Graphics of the
Americas this year was a huge
success. We met many new local
customers, as well as companies
from other states, the Caribbean
and Latin America. The number
of sales we actually closed at the
show was a new record for us.”
Antonio Nadais
CEO of SID SIGNS USA
“GOA always has been a great
trade show for us. We get a great
results all the time, people just
come to GOA looking for to learn
about the new technology and
that is what we are here for and
we have been for many years. We
are ready for GOA 2017”
Richard Peereboom
VP Microcut
“We were very fortunate that
we can show and demonstrate
our new set of machines here
at GOA. Our clients are very
excited to know more about
them and they are already getting
in touch with our reps in Latin
America”.
Richard Finkel
Sales Manager - SID SIGNS
“GOA has been a very important
trade show for us. It is a great
opportunity for our technology
to be exposed in Latin America
and GOA has showed the high
interest for us to expand our
business in this market”.
Till Schaefer
Argos Solutions
“Our experience is always great!
It is a great a pleasure to speak
in Spanish to our Latin America
clients. Our success was total
from day 1. A lot of people came
to buy as well as for support
and immediate solutions. We
are developing a new set of
machines ready for GOA 2017”.
Moses Nuño
Sales Manager TEC Lighting
“GOA is always important to us
since we have the chance to
meet not only with the potential
buyers but with the manufactures
that come to offer new products.
We have come to GOA for the
last 11 years and what we like the
most is that the attendees are
very knowledgeable and they are
here to buy”.

new positions in
sales, client services
and production.
In addition to full-service printing, Intech
provides a comprehensive and unique

added a more extensive variety of
grand format signage and displays,

product development. In addition, we will

data analytics, enabling us to provide our
clients with a more targeted approach
to their direct marketing efforts –
ultimately saving them time and money
and providing a much greater return on
investment.”
Intech will also expand its sales and
marketing efforts to the entire Gulf Coast
of Florida. According to the management
team, they will continuously explore all
growth opportunities, including potential
acquisitions, specifically those that
are closely aligned with Intech’s core
competencies and underlying values.
Held and Haddad are seasoned veterans
of the printing industry. Held comes
to Intech Printing with more than 20
years of experience, most recently,
from Canon, where he held sales and
sales management positions. Haddad
is a former CPA, and was a founding
shareholder of a software company
with an executive position as its chief
financial officer, helping to grow that
company from $3 million to $50 million in
annual sales with offices in six countries.
After selling the software company,
Haddad launched a digital printing
company specializing in short-run book
manufacturing. This company, which
Haddad and his son started from scratch
in 2010, is projected to surpass $1 million
in 2016.

Mac Papers Envelope Converters
(MPEC), a Jacksonville, Fla.-based sister
company of Mac Papers, Inc., has been
honored by the Flexographic Technology
Association (FTA) with five 2016 FTA
Awards in recognition of envelope print
excellence. The awards were issued
during the organization’s 2016 FTA Award
Show, held in Fort Worth, Texas.
“MPEC is honored to accept all of these
awards – but particularly excited to
receive the Best in Show award for a
third year in a row and to have swept the
Envelope, Process, Uncoated category,”
explained MPEC’s Bob Thole, director
of sales. “This recognition is a testament
to the fact that MPEC has some of the
most talented envelope technicians and
the very best pre-press and envelope-
folding equipment in the industry, as well
as some of the highest standards. Our
techniques allow us to offer customers
the fastest production times at the lowest
cost point, with the highest quality
possible. There is no other company that
can offer all three of these benefits, and
we’re thrilled by the recognition.”
The Gold & Best of Show, is the highest
award per category given by the FTA,
and marks the third-consecutive year
MPEC has earned the recognition. Of the
110 awards given this year, only six print
categories received Gold & Best of Show
awards. This year, MPEC was honored as
such in the Envelope, Process, Uncoated
category for its Business is Blooming
envelope, developed for Domtar. A
judge commented that the design
had “extremely clean, solid (four-color
process build) on [the] back, along with
[an] extremely tight registration – note
the small reverses out of the four-color
process. High impact, exceptionally
attractive and [a] well-executed piece.”
In addition to this top honor, MPEC
also took home the Silver and Bronze
awards, making the company the only
recipient of every award possible in this
category. The Silver award was given
for the company’s Piedmont Luxury

Hotel envelope. One judge noted that
the “fades and tonal range made this
piece a stand-out. [It has] extremely fine
screens going to white; no hard breaks.”
The Bronze award went to the Dish Multi-
Sport Pack envelope that, according to a
judge, had “exceptional solid ink density
and consistency. Good tonal range and
registration.”
In the Envelope, Screen, Uncoated
category, MPEC was also issued Silver
and Bronze awards, for its National
American Miss and Suddenlink
This Month on Demand envelopes,
respectively. A judge commented that
the National Miss envelope “… [had
very] tight registration elements on
multiple colors, along with holding small
reverses cleanly open.” Another said of
the Suddenlink product that it had “good,
solid ink density on blue, sharp type and
good tonal range in the black vignettes.”
MPEC uses the most advanced web
envelope-converting technology, allowing
for products to be sheeted, printed, cut,
folded, glued and finished in one run
on a single folding machine, without
interruption. Because in-line envelope
conversion can be more challenging
than using multiple machines for each
step, a high level of skill and advanced
equipment is required. Achieving tight
registration, as mentioned by the judges
above, is a skill that yields crisp printing
and easy-to-read reverse text on a
colored background.
