  • @nigelmasimbarodgers Thanks for your reply, Nigel. I, too, prefer the experience of riding my bike to work. :)

  • You're both right @karl Gilis & @Cecily Walker.
Usability is about function regardless of reaction, whereas user experience is about emotional reaction (whether positive or negative) regardless of how well the tool does the job.

For example I prefer the experience of riding a bicycle to work that riding a train, but the train gets me there faster, and safer.

  • Karl,

Thanks for your comment. I respectfully disagree, however: if a designer or developer creates something that goes beyond mere functionality, and you enjoy and benefit from the attention to detail that the designer/developer has put into crafting that web application or website, then the designer/developer has enhanced your overall user experience.

User experience isn’t just about making something that works. A 1993 Toyota Corolla works just fine, but I would hazard a guess that someone might find driving a Maybach a much more enjoyable experience.

  • I'm sorry but this has nothing to do with usability nor user experience.

User experience is a very empty word. It only refers to the experience a user has. The word itself is suddenly hijacked by a group of designers that don't like the word usability (because they assume that asuble means boring).

I have hundreds user experiences every day. 99% of them or bad experiences.

I will only remember those that were usable and user-friendly. And of those that were usable, probably those that had a nice design touch will stand out.
