Presentazione plitvice 2008

  1. 1. THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT:THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: EDUCATIONAL PERSPECTIVES INEDUCATIONAL PERSPECTIVES IN ITALYITALY Magda Sclaunich & Catina Feresin Department of Educational Science University of Trieste Italy
  2. 2. "Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs (Brutland Report, 1987)". In other words, sustainable development ensures that today's growth does not jeopardise the growth possibilities of future generations.
  3. 3. The present contribution suggests a series of remarks on how it would be possible to promote education for sustainable development. In particular, we want to focus the attention on Italy to understand better how this Country is facing sustainable development within its educational system.
  4. 4. We noticed that the concept of citizenship underlines a new way of thinking the educational system. Indeed, according to Santerini (1994; 2001; 2003) this concept is strongly connected with seven young people’s attitudes which have to be learned at school.
  5. 5. 1-Approaching problems as parts of a global society; 2-Assumption of responsibility; 3-Understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity; 4-Critic thought; 5-Attitude for a non violent solution in conflicts; 6-Changing life-style to respect environment; 7-Sensibility about human rights.
  6. 6. To better understand this citizenship concept, it is interesting to analyse a recent document entitled “Indication for the curriculum” (2007) which contains the specific programs for all the kind of schools of the Italian system (from infant to secondary schools).
  7. 7. This concept is present non only in correlated disciplines as history and science, but it appears also in disciplines apparently very “far” from these contents as foreign languages and art.
