The Casimir Research School (Casimir) is a research school
in interdisciplinary physics, established in 2004 by the Kavli
Institute of Nanoscience at Delft University of Technology
(Kavli) and the Leiden Institute of Physics (LION).
Our aim is to improve the education of young researchers
towards a PhD degree by creating interplay between PhD
students and experienced researchers and by offering a
research-related course program.
15 MSc-students, 270 PhD students, 120 postdocs and 90
senior researchers together form our Casimir community.
Scientific Director: Tjerk Oosterkamp, Co-Director: Hans Tanke
Casimir Board: Herre van der Zant (Chairman), Hans Tanke,

Casimir Spring School:
‘Sun, Sailing and Science’
Casimir facilitates advanced graduate courses and workshops for PhD students and
postdocs. Casimir PhD students are required to take at least three of the following courses:
PhD students are also encouraged to improve their ‘soft skills’.

Casimir PhD positions
The program is concluded with writing a research proposal
for a PhD project. The student can choose to submit this
proposal to compete for a Casimir PhD-position.
Casimir PhD-positions are awarded to outstanding students
of the Casimir Pre-PhD track; their research proposal has to
be well balanced between being feasible and ambitious.
Former winners of Casimir PhD positions are: Marios
Kounalakis (2015), Guoji Zheng (2015), Joeri de Bruijckere
(2015), Michiel Bakker (2015), Misha Klein (2014), Tom van der
Reep (2014), Henk Snijders (2014), Jelmer Wagenaar (2013),
Julia Cramer (2012), Chris Smiet (2012), and Tim Baart (2011).
