Leadership and Management in Health Care . Compare and 
contrast leadership roles and management responsibilities in 
a non-health care setting with that of a health care 
organization. In addition, present an overview of key 
leadership traits fundamental for health care organizational
effectiveness, and discuss the essential functions of health 
care managers. What does it take to be a “good” leader or 
manager? What are the primary barriers and challenges 
associated with health care leadership? 
Management and Motivation . Discuss the overall 
importance of motivation as it relates to management. What 
are the benefits of having a fully motivated staff, and what 
are the potential consequences of not having motivated 
staff? What do contemporary theories tell us about the 
significance of motivation as a function of employee needs, 
extrinsic and intrinsic factors? How do we motivate across 
generations? In your response, please be sure to identify and 
address at least two theories. 
Organizational Behavior and Management . Review the 
following case study in your textbook, Prelude to a Medical 
Error (pp. 416-417). Examine the application and answer 
Discussion Question 1: "Identify and discuss examples of 
preconceptions, assumptions, and mental models evident in 
this scenario. What are the consequences of the ways these 
health providers are thinking about the situation?" How 
might you, as the healthcare administrator of this 
organization, handle this situation and deal with each of the 
participants? 
Strategic Planning . Strategic planning is essential in the 
sustainability of all healthcare organizations. Outline the 
processes, or steps, involved in the strategic planning process 
and continual monitoring of the internal and external 
environment. Discuss how strategic planning is a dynamic, 
verses linear, process. 
Why is this important? What roles, if any, do quality and 
information technology play in an organization's strategic
direction? Use one scholarly reference, cited according to 
APA guidelines as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center, in 
addition to the textbook 
Health Insurance Benefits . Managers need to understand the 
impact on the financial viability of a health service 
organization for providing care to the uninsured or 
underinsured. Review the following case scenario and answer 
the discussion questions. 
Joe Smith is a 27- year-old Caucasian male who works two 
part-time jobs for two different construction companies. Joe 
has been having dizzy spells off and on for the past two 
months. While driving to work one day, he loses 
consciousness and is involved in a motor vehicle accident. Joe 
is admitted to your not-for-profit hospital with a broken leg 
and multiple lacerations. 
Managing Financial Budgets . Health care financial 
management is complex and an effective health care 
administrator must understand what makes up the 
foundation to financial operations. This includes: health 
insurance (private and social) and reimbursements, private 
vs. not-for profit entities, costs and expenditures, capital, 
materials management, and budgeting. 
1. Outline and discuss the major categories of 
reimbursements and costs in a health care organization. How 
do they influence each other? 
2. In addition, how do expenses and revenues affect the 
specific types of budgets outlined? 
Final Project Outline/Annotated Bibliography . Submit the 
following to your instructor for review: 
1. Identify the topic of your Final Project 
a. Describe the issue, why it was selected, the perspective of
approach, and the scope of the paper. 
2. Provide an outline of your project 
a. The outline should include a heading for each section of 
the Research Paper/PowerPoint Presentation (including one 
for the thesis and the conclusion) as well as heading 
descriptions. Subheadings should also be used with a 
description of each subheading. These should demonstrate 
that you have done significant research, evaluation, and 
critical thinking on the 
issues involved and should illustrate the strategies you would 
incorporate and implement for the scenario you are creating. 
3. Create an annotated bibliography 
a. The annotated bibliography should contain at least five 
scholarly sources that you intend to use in your project. Each 
listing must include a paraphrased narrative of the actual 
research study presented in the article and the studies used 
should represent the most current research related to the 
topic area. 
Your outline and annotated bibliography must adhere to 
proper APA style guidelines as outlined in the Ashford 
Writing Center. You can also find samples of each in the 
Ashford Writing Center, which is located under Learning 
Resources in the left-hand navigation panel of your 
classroom. 
Managing Multidisciplinary Professionals . Dr. White ordered 
an unusual dose of a medication for a patient. May 
Patterson, RN, sees the order and believes it to be the wrong 
dose. She is afraid to call Dr. White because he can be 
abrasive at times. Nurse Patterson asks the charge nurse who 
is not as familiar with the patient to call the doctor. The 
charge nurse calls Dr. White. He insists that he knows what is
best for the patient and insists that the medication will be 
given as written. The charge nurse calls you, the 
administrator on call for the weekend, to resolve the issue. 
1. What principles of effective teamwork have broken down? 
2. How will you work to resolve the issue? 
3. List and describe five potential strategies for conflict 
resolution within this team. 
a. What types of information will you need to collect to have 
an intelligent conversation with this physician? 
b. Who should be involved in this situation, and the 
discussion with Dr. White, and why? 
4. Which conflict resolution strategy is likely to be most 
successful? 
Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts. 
Human Resources . Human resources are an integral part of 
health care operations to recruit and retain high quality, and 
often highly specialized employees. 
1. Describe why human resources management is comprised 
of strategic and administrative actions, providing examples of 
each.
