What is Copyright?

authors, artists, composers and others from being used
without permission.
 These works include
 Writings
 Paintings
 Books
 Photographs
 CDs
 DVDs
 Copyright also protects items on the Internet including
 Text
 Images
 Music
 Videos
Copyright
1
What is Fair Use?
 Allows someone to use a limited amount of copyrighted
material for educational purposes without permission
 Questions to ask yourself that will help you decide if it is
fair use
 Is the material being used for nonprofit or education purposes?
 What type of material are you using?
 Are you using only a small part of the material?
 If you use the material will you keep the author or creator from
making money?
Copyright
2
What is Copyright Infringement?
 When copyrighted material is copied, reproduced,
distributed, performed, or publically displayed without
permission from the original author
 What are the consequences of copyright infringement?
 Fines
 Legal fees
 Termination of your YouTube account
Copyright
3
What is Public Domain?
 Copyrights are only for a limited time then the material
becomes public domain
 Works that are not copyrighted are public domain and
they may be used without permission
 It is always best practice to still give credit to the creator
even if it is public domain material
Copyright
4
Why Copyright?
 If you have spent a lot of time and effort on a piece of
work or a creation you would be upset if someone
copied it without asking you
 Copyright laws prevent other people from copying your
work and from changing your work in a way that you
may not like
 Copyright laws encourage and motivate people to be
creative and do their own work
