Ask students why they think it’s important to be Healthy and why should we develop Healthy Habits. Remind them of the fact that the choices we make today on a regular base will affect us tomorrow. Ask students to talk to the person next to them to come up with a definition of What a Habit is?
6AREAS OF WELLNESS Explain to the students that these 6 different areas of Health are all inter-related. SPIRITUAL and ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH 2 other areas, but we don’t focus on these in this class. When describing someone as “Healthy”, there needs to be BALANCE in all these areas. To be BALANCED all the time in not always possible, as it depends on the situations in life we encounter. Some things are out of control. It is good practice to keep checking whether you can improve on 1 area or another. THIS IS NEW INFORMATION FOR GRADE 6 BUT NOT FOR GRADES 7 & 8
SLEEP: Sleep gives your body a rest and allows it to prepare for the next day. It's like giving your body a mini-vacation. Sleep also gives your brain a chance to sort things out. Scientists aren't exactly sure what kinds of organizing your brain does while you sleep, but they think that sleep may be the time when the brain sorts and stores information, replaces chemicals, and solves problems. NUTRITIOUS FOOD AND BALANCED DIET: We need to have food from different food groups to get a variety of nutrients Make a rainbow on your plate, the different colours represent the different nutrients we need We need the 6 essential nutrients: carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals, fats/oils/sweets & water so the body can grow, glow and go In our diets we should not have too much salt, fat or sugar We can also prevent getting certain diseases by eating properly EXERCISE: When you exercise, you're helping build a strong body that will be able to move around and do all the stuff you need it to do. Try to be active every day and your body will thank you later! Find a type of exercise you enjoy doing. We should be exercising at least 30 minutes a day. We can also prevent getting certain diseases by exercising. Exercise also helps us deal with stress. PRACTICE GOOD HYGIENE: Wash daily body and hair Brush, floss teeth Wearing clean clothes and underwear Clean your nails Use deodorant AVOID DRUGS/ALCOHOL/TOBACCO: Resist peer pressure Just say NO! EMOTIONS: Emotions are there for a reason, they help us deal with life. There are no bad or good emotions, but only good or bad ways you react to them. Eg. Anger is normal but punching someone cause you’re angry is not a good way to deal with it. STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESS: Having a good self esteem is good for your health. Believe in yourself and don’t let others put you down. SADNESS: Is unfortunately a reality, we just need to manage it in a way that we don’t harm ourselves or anyone else. INTERACTION WITH OTHERS: We are not meant to live our lives alone. We were made for community – eg. Your face was made for others others see it more than you do. We all need to feel we belong and we are loved for who we are “ No man is an island” Often it is when we help others we feel better ourselves… the gift of giving!
