• Labor system
• Cheap labor
– Not free! what do they
need to provide?
– Make more $ from profits
• In U.S. have labor
intensive cash crops:
– Main crops are non-edible
• Tobacco ( very labor
intensive)
• Cotton (most famous)

• Why not Native
Americans?
– Know the land , can escape
– Not a lot left diseases
killing them
• Why not indentured
servants (English poor)?
– Many were getting done
with contracts

but not black.

9. Frederick Douglas
• Born possibly around 1818 in
Maryland as a Slave
• Died 1895 in Washington D.C.
as a free man
• Defying ban on teaching slaves
he learned how to read and
write.

– Gave many speeches
• Wrote autobiography
