Background of the study
Social networking is the most popular online activity worldwide.
Social networking accounted for nearly one in every five minutes spent online
globally in October 2011, ranking as the most engaging online activity world-
wide. Social networking sites now reach 82 percent of the world’s Internet
population age fifteen and older that accessed the Internet from a home or
work computer, representing 1.2 billion users around the globe.

An Interpersonal Relationship is a relatively long-
term association between two or more people. This
association may be based on emotions such as love and
liking, regular business interactions, or some other type
of social commitments.
Interpersonal relationships take place in a great
variety of contexts, such as family, friends, marriage,
acquaintances, work, clubs, neighborhoods, and
churches.
Statement of the Problem
This study aims on determining the Influence of Social
Networking Sites to the interpersonal relationship of the students.
Particularly, the researchers seek for the answers of the following
questions:

•What is the level of utilization of the students in terms of using
Social Networking Sites?

•What is the level of Interpersonal Relationship of students?

•Is there a significant relationship between the use of Social
Networking Sites and Interpersonal Relationship of the
students?
Hypothesis

      There is no significant relationship
between social networking sites and
interpersonal relationships of the students.
REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE
This chapter contains the review of related
literature of the study and the justification
of the conceptual and research literature
gathered from books, journals, researches
and online sources.
Social Networking Sites
The Different faces of Social Networking Sites
(Beccai, Dec 2010)

A social networking site is a form of social network service
created to encourage social relations among people with the use
of the World Wide Web. It was created to be able to connect with
friends easily and more comfortably, since we are now in a
generation where internet is prevalent. We have been using these
sites as it is part of our social norm.
Social Networking Sites

Lack of Anonymity

You are putting out information about your name,
location, age, gender, and many other types of information that
you may not want to let others know. Most people would say be
careful, but no one can be certain at any given time. As long as
people can know who you exactly are, then some can find ways to
do you in.
Interpersonal Relationship
Improving Interpersonal Relationships
(www.selfgrowth.com)
When you come to the realization that interpersonal
relationships are based on needs then the steps following become simple
and effective. To understand what a relationship is, how to bring one
about, how to enhance one, and why relationships are diminished and
lost, one must understand the power of a person’s needs. The most
important things in the world, to us, are the things we believe that we
need. The needs affect opinions, attitudes, and viewpoints. Generally
we’re more aware of unfulfilled needs than the ones that are
consistently met. Fundamental life needs in particular are so commonly
accepted that we usually overlook them. No one is aware of the air
breathed, the ground walked on, the water drunk, and yet these are
the needs we miss most when gone. The key to good interpersonal
relationships is simple once you understand the role that needs play in
making a relationship weak, moderate, average, or strong.
Interpersonal Relationship
Problems arising out of interpersonal relationship
(http://www.homeopathsaini.com)
Interpersonal relationships are a kind of give and take and
understanding each other. Whenever, any difference of opinion
surfaces between two individuals or among a group of people it
affects the thought process of the person. Mind being the super
computer of the human body works nonstop but throwing out
signals constantly in the form of speech, emotions and gestures.
Problems in interpersonal relationships give rise to feelings of
bitterness, anger, hate and rancour. All these kind of negative
emotions imbalances the thought process and bodily reactions of
the person at the same time. Wrong or inappropriate decision
making forms a part of the disturbed mind which further gives
rise to so many unending chain reactions in the human mind their
by spoiling the whole conducive atmosphere.
Theoretical and Framework

Jean Piaget’s: Theory of Cognitive Development

Social Networks, as a form of social constructivism, have the
potential to foster the interaction through which knowledge and
meaning is constructed. Jean Piaget, the Gestalt philosopher in
the Theory of Cognitive Development has informed educational
theory for decades. Social interaction, according to Piaget, is one
of the most important social tools by which students learn. Social
Networks are a virtual extension of that essential social
interaction. Social Networking and online learning communities
are keeping the teachers and students connected in and out of the
classroom. Social Networks also allow for the exchange of
information and ideas do not only within the confines of a
classroom, but across schools, districts, states and the world.

Data Gathering Procedure
•The researchers will distribute a survey form to each section in order to
determine the users of social networking sites and must be accomplished
within two to three days;
•An officer of each section will be selected to distribute the
questionnaires;
The copies of the main questionnaire will depend on the number of the
respondents. However, extra copies will be reproduced if some
respondents lost their questionnaires.
•The respondents will be given one day to answer the main questionnaire;
•An officer assigned of each section will collect the questionnaires;
•After the researchers collected the survey forms, a list of the respondents
which are SNS users will be organized then copies of the main
questionnaire will be produced;
•Once the deadline of the questionnaires arrived, the researchers will
coordinate with the officers to retrieve all the questionnaires completely;
•The questionnaires gathered will contain all the needed data for the
study and it will be organized, summarized, analyzed, and interpreted.
Statistical Treatment
The researchers used the following statistical tools to analyze the results
of the survey:

Summary
The group was conducted to determine the Influence of
Social Networking Sites to Interpersonal Relationship of the Students
of John Paul II College of Davao, Davao City. Specifically, the study
sought to answers the following questions:
     1. What is the level of utilization of the students in terms of using
        Social Networking Sites?
     2. What is the level of Interpersonal Relationship of the students?
     3. Is there a significant relationship between the use of Social
Networking Sites and Interpersonal Relationship of the students?
Based on the date presented, the following were the
     findings of the study conducted.
     1. The level of utilization of the students in terms of using Social
Networking Sites got an overall mean rating of 3.20 described as
        moderate.
     2. The level of Interpersonal Relationship got an overall mean
rating of 3.75 describes as high.
     3. There is a significant relationship between the use of Social
Networking Sites and Interpersonal Relationship of the students.
Conclusion

This research poses both opportunities and challenges for students
and their perspective department. Because students are using channels
like Facebook more intensely, they may not be engaging with the “real
world” to the extent that they might have in the past. For students’ affairs,
this could mean a change in tactics for engaging with their students,
placing additional emphasis on outreach through social media channels to
engage with their students. Institutions and department should seek to
engage and connect through these channels rather than simply spouting
information. If there is no two-way communication occurring, chances are
that information is falling on deaf ears of students. With institutions
seeking to cut cost and be more efficient than ever while maintaining
effectiveness, using social media as a tool for engagement, education and
development might prove to be one of the solutions to this difficult task.

Fortunately, social media appears to be where the students are,
institution simply need to plug in and take advantage of all of the
possibilities availed to them through this ever-evolving channels of
      communication.

  • 4. An Interpersonal Relationship is a relatively long- term association between two or more people. This association may be based on emotions such as love and liking, regular business interactions, or some other type of social commitments. Interpersonal relationships take place in a great variety of contexts, such as family, friends, marriage, acquaintances, work, clubs, neighborhoods, and churches.
  • 5. Statement of the Problem This study aims on determining the Influence of Social Networking Sites to the interpersonal relationship of the students. Particularly, the researchers seek for the answers of the following questions: •What is the level of utilization of the students in terms of using Social Networking Sites? •What is the level of Interpersonal Relationship of students? •Is there a significant relationship between the use of Social Networking Sites and Interpersonal Relationship of the students?
  • 6. Hypothesis There is no significant relationship between social networking sites and interpersonal relationships of the students.
  • 7. REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE This chapter contains the review of related literature of the study and the justification of the conceptual and research literature gathered from books, journals, researches and online sources.
  • 8. Social Networking Sites The Different faces of Social Networking Sites (Beccai, Dec 2010) A social networking site is a form of social network service created to encourage social relations among people with the use of the World Wide Web. It was created to be able to connect with friends easily and more comfortably, since we are now in a generation where internet is prevalent. We have been using these sites as it is part of our social norm.
  • 9. Social Networking Sites Lack of Anonymity You are putting out information about your name, location, age, gender, and many other types of information that you may not want to let others know. Most people would say be careful, but no one can be certain at any given time. As long as people can know who you exactly are, then some can find ways to do you in.
  • 10. Interpersonal Relationship Improving Interpersonal Relationships (www.selfgrowth.com) When you come to the realization that interpersonal relationships are based on needs then the steps following become simple and effective. To understand what a relationship is, how to bring one about, how to enhance one, and why relationships are diminished and lost, one must understand the power of a person’s needs. The most important things in the world, to us, are the things we believe that we need. The needs affect opinions, attitudes, and viewpoints. Generally we’re more aware of unfulfilled needs than the ones that are consistently met. Fundamental life needs in particular are so commonly accepted that we usually overlook them. No one is aware of the air breathed, the ground walked on, the water drunk, and yet these are the needs we miss most when gone. The key to good interpersonal relationships is simple once you understand the role that needs play in making a relationship weak, moderate, average, or strong.
  • 11. Interpersonal Relationship Problems arising out of interpersonal relationship (http://www.homeopathsaini.com) Interpersonal relationships are a kind of give and take and understanding each other. Whenever, any difference of opinion surfaces between two individuals or among a group of people it affects the thought process of the person. Mind being the super computer of the human body works nonstop but throwing out signals constantly in the form of speech, emotions and gestures. Problems in interpersonal relationships give rise to feelings of bitterness, anger, hate and rancour. All these kind of negative emotions imbalances the thought process and bodily reactions of the person at the same time. Wrong or inappropriate decision making forms a part of the disturbed mind which further gives rise to so many unending chain reactions in the human mind their by spoiling the whole conducive atmosphere.
  • 12. Theoretical and Framework Jean Piaget’s: Theory of Cognitive Development Social Networks, as a form of social constructivism, have the potential to foster the interaction through which knowledge and meaning is constructed. Jean Piaget, the Gestalt philosopher in the Theory of Cognitive Development has informed educational theory for decades. Social interaction, according to Piaget, is one of the most important social tools by which students learn. Social Networks are a virtual extension of that essential social interaction. Social Networking and online learning communities are keeping the teachers and students connected in and out of the classroom. • 27. Conclusion This research poses both opportunities and challenges for students and their perspective department. Because students are using channels like Facebook more intensely, they may not be engaging with the “real world” to the extent that they might have in the past. For students’ affairs, this could mean a change in tactics for engaging with their students, placing additional emphasis on outreach through social media channels to engage with their students. Institutions and department should seek to engage and connect through these channels rather than simply spouting information. If there is no two-way communication occurring, chances are that information is falling on deaf ears of students. With institutions seeking to cut cost and be more efficient than ever while maintaining effectiveness, using social media as a tool for engagement, education and development might prove to be one of the solutions to this difficult task. Fortunately, social media appears to be where the students are, institution simply need to plug in and take advantage of all of the possibilities availed to them through this ever-evolving channels of communication.

  1. Top ten Most Engaged Social Networking Markets Worldwide The widespread adoption of social networking highlights the global appeal of this online activity. Of the 43 markets individually reported by comScore, 41 markets saw at least 85 percent of their respective online populations visit social networking sites in October 2011.
  2. The "dependent variable" represents the output or effect, or is tested to see if it is the effect. The "independent variables" represent the inputs or causes, or are tested to see if they are the cause. In a statistics experiment, the dependent variable is the event studied and expected to change whenever the independent variable is altered. The paradigm above shows the influence of social networking sites to the interpersonal relationship of students. There are two possible types of interpersonal relationship that students tend to develop. These are the following: Stronger interpersonal relationship of students with their friends, teachers, and parents. This happens if a student or a person knows well how to use a social networking site. Students are always updated with the status of their close friends, teachers, or even their parents that are added in their friends list in the social networking sites that they are using. It will also be easier for the user to know when will be the birthday of his/her friends and so he/she can greet them easily, even if they are apart and also, with less time and effort. Students, aside from developing a stronger interpersonal relationship, in contrast, tend to develop a weaker interpersonal relationship with their friends, teachers and parents. This is due to too much dependency of students to the internet and computer as a medium of communication with their friends, teachers, and parents. Sometimes, students can only tell what they want to other people whenever they are chatting or when they post comments on the wall of a person’s account or profile. If they do this over and over again, this develops into a habit and be used to it until the time comes that they just depend on the internet and computer on telling what they want. Through this, a person can’t express his emotions that results to an unhealthy relationship with other people. There are also times that social networking sites don’t have any effect on the interpersonal relationship of a student or a person with other people. This is why researchers identified the influence of social networking sites to the students of John Paul II College.
  3. Guidance Counselors. This study will help the guidance counselors to be aware of the influences of social networking sites to the students in John Paul II College. By informing them of this matter, they will be able to relate more with students and to give advices to students. School Administrators. This study will help the school administrators to be aware of the influences of social networking sites to the students in John Paul II College and give advices that are appropriate to the situation when SNS’s affect the interpersonal relationship of students. Social Networking Sites Developers. The result of this study will make the developers of different SNS’s aware of the influences of the SNS’s that they are maintaining and making. Because of this, they will be trying their best to develop a social networking site that will only have good effects to the user and will help them to develop a strong interpersonal relationship of the user to other people. Students. The result of this study will make the students aware of how does social networking sites influence them and how does it affect their interpersonal relationships. This will educate the students regarding the proper usage of social networking sites. This will help the students to improve their social life with the use of social networking sites. Teachers / Clinical Instructors. This study can help the teachers by suggesting some ways in order for them to relate with student’s social activities especially with regards of using social networking sites. In line with this, teachers or Clinical Instructors, as student’s second parents, will know a way how to help the students if they will be encountering a problem regarding the relationship of their students with other people. Parents. This study will help parents to understand their child’s purpose of using social networking sites and for them to be aware of the influence from social networking sites that might affect their children. With enough knowledge, parents can think of possible preventive ways if their child is prone to develop a weak interpersonal relationship with other people because of too much usage and dependence from social networking sites. Future Researchers. This study can help the further studies of future researchers regarding the influence of social networking sites on the interpersonal relationship of students. This can serve as a reference for further improvements to be done in their study.
  4. Research DesignThis study use descriptive - correlational research design. It involves the description, recording, analysis, and interpretation of the present nature, composition, or processes of phenomena. It focuses on prevailing conditions or how a person, group, or thing behaves or functions in the present. It often involves some type of comparison or contrast. The researchers use the survey technique which is under descriptive – correlational research design. Survey technique, requires gathering of facts that requires sufficient and accurate interpretation. This technique is used to collect demographic data about respondent’s behavior, beliefs, opinions, interests and the like and then the gathered data are analyzed, organized, and interpreted. Research SubjectsThe researchers use purposive sampling. This sampling method included respondents that fall under the purpose of the study and others that are not useful for the study are positively excluded. The study focused on the effects of SNS to the interpersonal relationship thus a survey is conducted to the college students of John Paul II College that are using social networking sites every day.  Research InstrumentThe researchers used questionnaires and survey forms as research instruments. The survey form asked if the respondents are using social networking sites and their frequency of using the sites. After determining those who use social networking sites everyday, the questionnaire asked for the profile of the respondents and the status of their interpersonal relationship with their family, friends, teachers, classmates’ and others.
  5. The purpose of this table is to determine if there is any significant relationship between the scaling of Social Networking Sited and Interpersonal Relationship of the Students.
  6. The mean, or average, is the sum of the values divided by the total number of values. This determined the average result of the data gathered from different respondents.Pearson's r is designed so that the correlation between Social Networking Sites and Interpersonal Relationship. To achieve this property, Pearson's correlation is computed by dividing the sum of the xy column (Σxy) by the square root of the product of the sum of the x2 column (Σx2) and the sum of the y2 column (Σy2). The resulting formula is:
