3. In some cases, a person will leave it
up to the executor to determine a
suitable charity. In other cases, a
person may wish to leave something
to a specific charity. In those cases,
it is a good idea to describe the
charity unambiguously by using the
legal name of the charity. This can
be confusing and sometimes requires
some research, since some large
charitable organizations have several
legal charitable entities associated
with them. An example of this would
be an organization like the SPCA or
the United Way.

5. That used to be the case in Alberta,
but is no longer the case in this
province. However, in other
jurisdictions, getting married may
have the effect of nullifying a pre-
existing will. To be on the safe side,
you may consider making a will “in
contemplation of marriage” to a
particular person.

7. In Alberta, a divorce may have the
effect of rescinding a gift made by
will to a former spouse. To be on the
safe side, upon divorce or separation
you should consider changing your will
to exclude your former or estranged
spouse or to explicitly include that
person notwithstanding the breakdown
of the marriage.
